Guys this is fucking buffy, do you really think the writing is so bad that they'd just canonically say a char was always there that wasn't? 7:17 NO FUCKIN SHIT RETARDS!
"So when like Joys, Joy... What's her name? ...Joyce?" - Rana C'mon guys. How are you ^still* getting the main characters' names wrong, more than two-thirds of the way through the series? You're almost up to one hundred episodes.
Taking the sitcom trope of "family member we never mentioned existed before" and making it a horror movie premise is one of the most brilliant things Buffy ever did. The mystery of who Dawn is and why everyone thinks she's been there the whole time is so fascinating
@@jp3813 Yeah. And it's not a good plot twist. It's common sense that she's not Buffy's sister because the writers keep having the characters give on the nose dialogue confirming it.
@@x-man9473 The writers never intended for the viewers to accept Dawn as Buffy's sister in the first place. It's her existence within the story that's meant to be the mystery.
Yup since season 1!! She was brilliant on that show imo and with some great one liners! "Now, if you’ll excuse, I’m going to get drunk enough to make you all seem interesting." - G Sparks
The really weird thing is that in the episode "Living Conditions" they said that Buffy was having trouble with her roommate Kathy because Buffy grew up as an "only child!"
@@alexmckee4683The way Buffy tries to keep Dawn away from her (yet still in sight), she may as well have been an only child! If she wasn’t so resistant, it’d be easier.
What do you mean, Normies? Dawn's been here the whole time! Don't you remember her in season 1 when everyone was chasing after that scary puppet? I can't believe you forgot Dawn. *shakes head
If you remember all the way back to the first Dream Buffy shared with Faith, Faith mentioned getting ready for little sis and called her little Miss Muffet. Then the guy in this episode refers to Dawn as Curds and Whey. They've been building up to this for a long time.
That dream was in the finale episode of season four and Dawn shows up the first time in the next episode! Long time my ass! Counting down from 730 on the other hand ...
Wait, my bad, little sis coming was in the episode when Faith wakes up from the coma, so half a season before she shows up. I misremembered, mean culpa!
Season 5...so glad to go thru it with you all. After season 1, it seemed like each season had at least one episode that became iconic...almost legendary TV...in an era where most shows stuck with familiar methods of direction and writing. Buffy constantly broke that wall, pushing expectations farther than anyone expected or predicted, consistently managing to 'one-up' its previous seasons. Without spoilers, I can only say that this stayed true for every season, including this one. Big kudos have to be given to a young Michelle Trachtenberg for stepping into an ensemble cast in their 5th year of production...and KILLIN it as a new character that has obviously been ret-conned into an existing canonical story. Got to admit...I envy you the firsts you are experiencing, you have a bumpy ride ahead of you.
@@francescominoguarino827 What I actually meant is the immaturity of a 12 year old is different than the immaturity of a 14 year old! Dawn is acting like a little kid than a teenager.
I feel like I have to remind certain people that Dawn is supposed to be young teenage sister. Young. I tend to see people look at this through the eyes of adults and forget what it was like when we were younger, or how our younger siblings used to be. So let's not put an adult lens on a child character. She is portraying exactly what she needs to be portraying....
When you have that 20/20 hindsight it’s so interesting to see how Buffy naturally resents and alienates Dawn, and it just makes sense. From the beginning you assume it’s a sisterly thing but then later on things are put into perspective and it all clicks into place. I love this season. It’s honestly one of the best.
@@jp3813 For some it is. You think all sisters, especially estranged sisters or sisters with big age gaps, have good relationships? It doesn’t have to be common, but it is real, and the point of Buffy is to play with TV tropes anyways. That’s how it was watching this show when it aired. It was rare to get a TV show that depicted siblings/sisters as anything but having a cats and dogs relationship. Regardless, your initial comment missed the point. I’m talking about the perspective we get AFTER we learn about Dawn, because how they wrote her in was also satire in the commonly used trope of randomly bringing in a new character or replacing one with another actor and acting like they’ve been there the whole time.
@@Lauren-zx3gx Keyphrase: "most viewers". Hence, claiming that "you assume it's a sisterly thing" is generally inaccurate no matter how far along one is in the season. Because the majority of the audience knows that the sisterly thing is fabricated from "Buffy vs Dracula" to "The Gift".
As someone who was not a fan of the whole initiative storyline in season 4, this is a huge step better. I love season 5. Can't wait for the reaction to the craziness of some of the reveals. Definitely some of the most convoluted storytelling of the show. Thanks Normies.
Faith, in the Season 3 finale: "Little Miss Muffet, counting down" Faith, in the Season 4 finals: "Little sis is coming." Some random homeless guy, in this episode, pointing to Dawn: "Curds and whey."
I urge y’all to try and be understanding of Dawn. Many people find her super annoying upon first watch but if you really think about the situation she is in, a lot of the stuff she does is pretty believable.
"I think Dawn is Buffy's inner child that's splitting from her." Okay, considering one of this season's main themes is duality, which next episode will explore more explicitly, this is an impressive theory. SPOILERS SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON Thematically speaking, Dawn *is* the human/child part of Buffy that Buffy will try to save, the last part of her innocence. In "Fool for Love", Spike says that every slayer has a death wish, and that Buffy's human connections are what prevent her from getting into that mind state. The more Buffy loses through the season, the closer she gets to that death wish. "I don't know how to live in this world if these are the choices." Buffy also says "Dawn is a part of me, the only part that I-". She never finishes it, but it's implied that Dawn is the only part of herself that Buffy cares about. I'm so excited to watch the Normies' reaction to the rest of the season.
I know she hasn't had a lot of screen time but not sure why you guys don't know Dawn. When Angel was evil he drew pictures of both Joyce and Dawn to threaten them. Plus she played miniature golf with the gang and Ted. Buffy also told Joyce not to come to graduation and for Dawn and her to leave town.
Y'all, have you MET Joss Whedon? You think he'd simply go with the "oh we're gonna act like this character was here the whole time" trope and leave it at that?
the 'homeless' guy says "curds & whey" to dawn which was referenced previously by faith in their mindmeld dream "Little miss muffet, counting down from 7 3 0"
Much better job, the rest of y'all! And pretty much an apology to Rana and Spidey. (All right, I also apologize if I was a little too harsh in my comment on Buffy vs. Dracula.) And some very interesting theories! Nice to have everyone back on track. ("Since when is anything just anything on this show?" - maybe should've been thought about one ep ago; but defintely a good rule to live by with this series : ) . )
I think this is the season we've been waiting for yall to react to lol When shows put the and... in credits its a prominent place. So makes sense Tara and Gilrs get the and. You're either first or and in the actor hierarchy
It’s hard to remember the dialogue between Buffy and Faith, the peaches and cream, little miss Muffett references, counting down from 730…but, be patient..
Dawn was predicted in the dream sequence with Faith --what Faith says is about Dawn. And ialong with the Cheeseman in the Dream Sequence with Tara --Tara says be back before Dawn
I don't understand why they keep pretending that they don't remember Dawn! Don't they remember when she defeated the Master in S1 and nearly died? Or how she came up with the plan to kill the Mayor? Or when she helped merge with Buffy to defeat Adam? She's been there the whole time since E1!
Cmon guys read your notes Dawn was always there. Member in 2x1 when Buffy came back just in time to stop that awful kiss and mentioned her trip visiting her dad and sister....cmon guys keep up 😏
When this first aired I remember friends at school annoyed over how they "cousin Oliver'd" Buffy.😅 Also, vampires in Buffy have a natural tendency to follow the vamp who created them, hence Harmony being able to form a gang.
I enjoy your group and you are one of my favorite reaction sites. The only suggestion is to sit back and enjoy the excellent and thought challenging Season 5. Your theories about the show's plotlines are fun to hear but will be a futile exercise. Seasons 5 and 6 were foreshadowed starting in Season 3 and can only be understood after a rewatching. You are now at the epicenter of the Buffy verse with some of the best episodes in television history ahead. I suggest you enjoy the entertainment and at the same time pay attention to the themes and challenges to individual morality and human philosophy. What started in Episode 22 of Season 4, Restless, will gain speed and be on display. I look forward to listening to your group as you start to debate the ideas and writing of the next 2 seasons.
Dawn was originally intended to be 12 before they cast 14yo Michelle. That is why she often acts like even more of a brat than you would expect of a 14 year old. There's an in-story Post Creative Rationalisation too, but you need more information before it can be revealed.
