Thank you for pointing out the amazing confluence of Buffy history elements. I hadn't really noticed before. This episode had 3 writers, and they take her back to High School, and the Hell Mouth. And down into it. (If they had the budget, I'm sure we'd have seen more.) What could that mean in terms of personal development? If it's her relationship with Riley (or Angel), it might mean she's ready to deal with some stuff now that she wasn't previously. But to bring up so many other past details as well--why? I need to see this episode again. Also, the swearing in 2 languages, with subtitles! Very nice.

Buffy's only 18. We saw her 18th birthday last season (episode 12 Helpless) when she had her powers taken away by Giles and the Watchers Council

"A line of mystical warriors that don't live past 25"... Seeing as the rational part of a person's brain won't be fully developed until age 25 or so, this is worth pointing out as a part of the show that blends theme and plot very seamlessly and elegantly. I mean, they sometimes do go too heavy handed with the "theme over plot" resolve (e.g. when Buffy feels stronger after resurrection; because thematically, she let go of holding onto childhood and embarked on a journey towards adulthood represented by slayerness, leaving us wondering how does it make sense plotwise), so it's only fitting to point out the times it syncs so well you almost don't notice.

@18:15-18:34....came just for that. Though I did also love his enthusiasm at the end when Willow and Zander were watching TV. "Oh c'mon!!!"

Remember between seasons 3-4 you lost Angel and CC from the titles and then lost Oz too so there's plenty of space to slot Riley in.

Nit pick about this episode: Iowa boy Riley instinctively knows better than California girl Buffy what to do in an earthquake.

Doomed was a great fun episode with the comedy between Spike and Xander hilarious. It's almost like the 'Odd Couple' the two of them in the basement is a sitcom I would pay to watch. The last part when Spike gets recognised by Riley and tries to put on an American accent was hilarious, Domi you didn't have that bit in your edit! The very end where Spike is so enthusiastic to go on a killing spree is also very darkly funny. The title seems to sum up almost every relationship in The Buffyverse! The Biley/Ruffy (whatever you want to call it) realtionship was so divisive for fans. I remember at the time Marc Blucas coming in for lots of stick from Bangel fans, somewhat unfairly really.

Pleasantly surprised that you were able to enjoy this episode so much despite the lack of Tara. Do you think the information you had going into the show helped with that? If you had no idea where things were going, do you think this episode would have made you worried that we weren't going to get any more of her, and you would have been distracted by that? Or no?

Buffy and Reilly get together... in an episode called doomed. Kinda makes me wonder Joss, How much did you know, and when did you know it!

Riley is written very unevenly at times. I think that's why sometimes it is easier to connect with his character and think he is good with Buffy and good for Buffy and so sweet, and other times it is like really, dude, why are you even here? And that has to do with different writers writing him and maybe not being so cohesive about his character. Marc Blucas is great with what he is given, but sometimes what he is given isn't great. Season 4 is like that a lot. It has episodes of brilliance and episodes of meh and episodes where I feel Joss should have been paying a lot more attention to Buffy and a little less attention to Angel. As for Spike battling demons in Xander's Hawaiian print shirt, that is one of my top ten favorite Spike moments on Buffy. It gives him purpose for being alive again after wanting to end it all. He desperately needed to have one. Plus, beating stuff up is his hobby.

It's why I really liked the idea of Willow and Spike becoming a couple. They have such good interactions, and I thought it would be interesting to see them together.

I love how consistent the continuity is with this show (poor continuity is one of my big pet peeves)- Willow is wearing a pink flowered cardigan that we've seen her wearing before in Season 3 (I can't remember the episodes but I'm fairly sure it was the latter half of the season), and that will be somewhat significant in future episodes (I hope that's not too spoilerish to say).

I don't know if this episode is meant to be a call back to The Zeppo, but the over-the-top reactions and the demons very much remind me of that episode. Remember the Sisterhood of Je' (or, however you spell that).

Ahh the Spike living in Xander's basement days. The days that launched me into being a total Spander shipper even though it was never ever actually ever a thing. Ever. Tbh I shipped Spike with pretty much everyone on the show except maybe Snyder.

I actually love Riley and the way they come together. I think he really really loves Buffy in their relationship and is so caring and... I don't tknow he is one of my favorites. And you re absolutely right , they talk, no bullshit.

Well domi e. is a smart, fun, and cool reactor, but "Buffy should go to Hell" is not a take I ever expected to hear. :p LOL Granted that might make a really cool episode if it ever happens.

I go back to this episode as a top 10. Buffy is honest with Riley, yet he is still trying to hide who he is. Gonna get interesting from these plot developments and character arcs. Enjoy!

I have seen some fans talk about how caring Riley is. This is the episode that turned me against him as Buffy had some genuine reasons and arguments she needed to deal with before being in a relationship (not just Angel issues, but life issues [example: she brought up Faith for a reason] as well) and Riley called her stupid for not doing it his way. I think it says a lot about Riley, but I also think it says a lot about Buffy when she decides to date him at the end of the episode after she knows he would say that to her. My favorite parts of the episode are James Marsters (an American) as Spike putting on an American accent while Spike has to phony an American accent (although pretty much anything Spike does in this episode is comedy gold - although, personally I am not a fan of his hype at the episode's last moment), the Scoobies saying, "Again!" in reference to another apocalypse, and Giles realizing a problem by using the phrase, "Oh, as usual, dear." Spike knows Buffy cannot fight the "forces of evil" without friends as he was the first one to mention what "a slayer with family and friends" can be like. After all "that sure as hell wasn't in the brochure."

Riley kind of got under my skin this episode. The woman clearly said no, nein, non, não, hapana, нет, 不, aʻole, and nyuh-uh.

I second Buffy8fan in this one. I tolerate Riley and will even defend him when I feel it's deserved but this is probably my most hated Riley scene when he disrespect and invalidates her feelings when she says she doesn't want a relationship. There MIGHT be truth in what he's saying but that's beside the point, pressuring into a relationship she says she doesn't want is not Okay in my book. There's a lot of better ways he could have handled that conversation.
