It's weird how they retconned Amy into having all this power. She's goes from having to turn herself into a rat, to prevent a bunch of humans from burning her at the stake, to being able move things with her mind, control other humans with the snap of a finger, and transporting people with a flick of the wrist.

It is nice to see Amy again...for two seconds. Before she starts manipulating Willow, making her feel like a wuss for staying home alone, pushing her to do lots of unnecessary spells on innocent civilians in a club, and generally encouraging all of Willow's worst tendencies. Her interactions with Buffy are pretty gold too: "How've you been?" "Rat. You?" "Dead." "Oh." Spike in this episode is interesting because of his behaviour when he thinks his chip has stopped working. He goes out of his way to find an innocent person to feed from, but when he actually lost his memory in the last episode, his first instinct is the complete opposite. He wants to help the gang and assumes he has a soul for the whole time he's forgotten who he is. Suggesting that maybe Spike's natural instincts are actually better than he thinks, but simply because he is a vampire, he dismisses any good thoughts and thinks he has to be evil and kill people because of who he is. Just my theory though.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
The lore of the Buffyverse keeps saying there’s a difference between the human and the demon. And that may be so - but a vampire is in the middle. It is neither fully man and neither fully monster. I’m sure it’s very possible for a vampire to be good. And if it isn’t - well,… Spike was just a special vampire then. Maybe the demon that set up shop in William was a good demon and only convinced itself that it was evil because demons usually are very evil. Spike certainly loved to play evil. To perform it. Maybe it’s that his demon actually wasn’t. Maybe Spike was more on the side of good and didn’t know it? Because how could he if all he has ever really known of demons is evil? He just thought he was. I mean look at Tara in the ‘Family’ episode. She was told and taught from birth that she was a demon or would become one after she turned 20, so she automatically thought demon = evil. She’d turn evil. Everyone said it was so, so how could she think otherwise? Turning into a demon must mean turning evil. And what if she was actually a demon? What if the writers bit the bullet and made it true? Would Tara have turned evil or would she just be the way she already was but just no longer a human? Look at Anya - a human now but once was a demon. Was she evil? Nah. Mainly just selfish. She could have easily turned good as a human or not. I think it really does just depend on the company you keep. What support you have or don’t have. And whether you have a choice to do one from the other. Spike was never evil. He just believed he was.
@faithvictoria9014
@faithvictoria9014 Год назад
@@Girl4Music I love this take and agree with basically all your points. I think it doesn't help that the first time we learn about the soul lore of the Biffyverse is with Angel/Angelus, because even other vampires admit he's a special case. The judge found enough humanity in other vampires to burn them, suggesting they at least had the capacity for good, but Angelus was unscathed because he is such a uniquely evil demon even other demons are scared of him. But he is the standout, not the rule: season six is full of mostly harmless demons going about their daily lives who have no evil intent towards anything or anyone (well except for kittens) such as Teeth in Tabula Rasa, Clem who first appeared in Life Serial and so on. The idea is clearly there that the more of a mixture between demon and human you are, the greater your capacity for good. The mayor in season 3 wanted to become a pure demon which scared even other demons as it was something usually only seen in hell. And while some demons that Buffy has fought have been destructive, others are chill enough to hang out with. So Spike insisting he's a monster is not the full truth, but more him denying a more painful part of himself.

I wish I could explain the complicated feelings I have towards Spuffy. I say I don’t ship them but I can’t help myself naturally gravitate towards content of them. They’re just so interesting as a character dynamic if not a romantic couple. So much goes on with them and marvellously portrayed by Gellar and Marsters. I think I’m doing the same thing Buffy and Spike do with each other. Repress and deny my feelings for being what they are so I’m gonna say it if only to admit it to myself if not anyone else… I do kinda ship Spuffy. I mean I’m not this way with Buffy and Angel. Hell, I try to ignore content on them but Tumblr is bombarded with it that I can’t get away from it. But Buffy and Spike - I actively go looking for it. That just says everything I don’t want to be said. Maybe I should sing it instead. 😂

Even though Amy is back, we can see she is a bad influence on Willow, as she is a powerful witch also, the two of them at having great fun at The Bronze, but at the expense of everyone else, we can see again the magic addiction out of control. Spike knows something has changed in Buffy, and proves it by hitting her with no neural pain for him. It always looked as if it was only a matter of time when Buffy sucumbed to her sexual urges and desires, and they two of them with superhuman powers shag so hard they demolish the house! The seeds are now really being sown for the tone of this Season as 'Pandora's Box' is now well and truly opened.

For example besides the buffy I can't see any other Slayer that can defeat angel or Spike And we saw in this episode the real strength of an old vampire and a Slayer at the height of their strength and power kkkkkkk It's funny that they have all this strength just to have sex but when they're really fighting they don't even show half of the strength they have

The moment, for me, which made me realize, the first time around, that none of the group could help with each other's problems, due to having their own, is when Buffy self-identified her depression and handling it by sleeping with Spike to Willow abusing magic. The moment Buffy becomes aware of Willow's issues everyone else already is aware and already worried about their own thing ie Xander and Anya focusing on the wedding while Buffy self-identifies her and Spike to Willow's addiction to the point where she cannot help either. Thus Willow and Amy running rampant with magic The saddest part is Amy cannot even hold too much blame. She was just another cog in the works since Willow restored Angel's soul showing she's been addicted since then. The real over-the-line moment for Willow in terms of the arc of addiction was resurrecting Buffy.

SPOILERS: “‘Cause it’s over/Exactly. It’s over.” “So I guess we both made good first steps/I guess.” These short intimate talks really just show the connection severed between these two characters. Blank expressions on their faces as they say what they do to each other reveal that they’re only really ever thinking about themselves and their own struggles. They’re not actually connecting. They’re projecting. Using each other as a sounding board for their pain. It’s in stark contrast to the short intimate talks they have in Season 7 or even in previous seasons where they are actually thinking about each other when they do go through their individual and personal struggles. I’m not saying they aren’t concerned for one another in Season 6. It’s just their own internal shit takes priority so much so that there’s not enough room for each other’s. Which is the way it should be. But it does give somewhat logical standing for their physical showdown in ‘Two To Go’. Fighting to connect again.

I disagree with the willow addiction since season 3 . In the beginning it was a fascination. And she was learning but very cautious and not using it unless needed. @@camgeorge6222 I disagree, but everyone has a right to their own opinion. Fascinating doesn't mean not addicted. And Willow was learning but, again, the fact that she was already ignoring Giles warnings at the beginning of S3 doesn't tell me she was being cautious, especially after she knows he has been abusing magic. Episodes like _Dopplegangland_ and _Something Blue_ as well as many other moments before Glory are part of a slow addiction build. Just using magic doesn't show addiction, but how she uses it (and nearly uses it in _Wild at Heart's_ case) show addiction. She may not have crossed the line until resurrecting Buffy, but addiction was there from the beginning. Its a fine line between curiosity, and Willow crossed it with few noticing sooner, which is another reason why no one could help or do so sooner But if you don't think this, as I stated at the beginning, you're entitled to your own opinion.

Something just occured to me. Willow only cast the spell to make Buffy and Tara forget. Meaning, Giles, Xander, Anya, Dawn, and Spike would still know about Buffy being in Heaven and the disagreements between Willow and Tara about her over use of magic. How was Willow going to tackle the others, because eventually one of them was bound to mention Heaven to Buffy, and when she has no clue what their talking about Tara would once again realise what happened. Obviously the whole point is Willow obviously isn't thinking about the long-term, eventually she would have had to start erasing everybody else's memories too...i realise i totally over-thought this, but hey that's what makes shows like Buffy fun.

Spuffy Fascinates me. It's the Perfect example of a mutually abusive relationship. Buffy is vulnerable and he is there for her but also manipulative. Spike is hooked, frankly obsessively and by extension without a soul is vulnerable to any crash she may have in his direction and away from the light and misinterpret it, especially as without a true sense of right and wrong she Was his light for Years. That is an Ugly combination but it also shows how much these things suck you in. People think you can easily walk away from these things, even if it's one sided abuse, but in reality, the good (only one who was there for her, her being his light) and the passion suck you in hard. People die in these relationships for a reason. It's sad, but it's honest and I liked that. Plus they are genuinely funny which makes it easier to handle the watch.

My BUFFY REWATCH recap for the episode 'Smashed". Contains spoilers. Do not read if you are not passed this episode or all of Season 6. ‘Smashed’ is an interesting episode. I refer to it as part 1 of the catalyst of the themes of addiction and depression going on in Season 6 with Buffy and Willow. Part 2 being ‘Wrecked’. This episode introduces several destructive relationships. One such destructive relationship has already been well established so far in Season 6: Willow and magic. A human-to-human destructive relationship introduced, however, is through magic… in the sudden emergence of a recurring character that has been left by the wayside until now. Amy Madison. But while Willow and Amy’s relationship does have an equal amount of screen-time, I would say it’s Buffy and Spike’s relationship that takes center-stage in this episode. Thus, it is Buffy and Spike that I will be talking about for this recap as I want to discuss the whole comparison between soul-having and chip-having and what that means for Buffy and Spike’s relationship. Half-way through this episode it is revealed that Spike can now hurt Buffy again and therefore fight back when she physically strikes him. The sudden assumption by Spike is that his chip is faulty and that that must mean that he can hurt all humans again. However, when he tries his theory out on an innocent female victim and it is confirmed to be incorrect by Warren that something is wrong with it, Spike realizes it’s not the chip that’s faulty. It’s Buffy. Somehow Buffy’s resurrection from the grave has changed the functionality of Spike’s chip. It no longer works on her and that means Spike’s relationship with Buffy - which has been loving and healthy so far in Season 6 - has turned abusive and destructive because… of course…Spike would want to hurt her again and resume the violent “dance” that’s been happening between them since before Spike’s chip was implanted in Season 4. This revelation culminates in them having violent sex - which Buffy initiates. Their desire and passion for one another literally destroys an entire building. A way of showing that their sexual intimacy is so intense and powerful that it can actually bring a house down. While this is the relationship development Spuffy Shippers wanted, it’s is not quite what they asked for. So let’s analyze this turn of events shall we? The way I interpret this final scene is like this: We know from ‘Fool For Love’ that Spike conflates sex and violence. So I personally believe the creators - Whedon specifically - are basically giving the Spuffy fans the finger and saying “be careful what you wish for”. Essentially making the argument that a soulless vampire and a vampire slayer cannot physically be together without hurting each other. The only reason Spike and Buffy weren’t hurting each other beforehand was because Spike was chastised by his chip and so it was unfair for Buffy to fight him when he couldn’t fight back without hurting himself. So Spuffy fans get the sex but it comes at a price. It comes at the price of violence between them. To me, there’s this glaringly obvious comparison happening here between Spike not having a soul and not having a working chip. Since the beginning of Spike’s appearance on the show, characters make funny comments every now and again of Spike being an actual dog (I mean just look at his name) - and when the chip comes into play in Season 4, he becomes a domesticated dog that is housetraining. See Spike’s dialogue in ‘Pangs’: “I'm saying that Spike had a little trip to the vet and now he doesn't chase the other puppies anymore. I can't bite anything. I can't even hit people.” So in metaphor - the chip is a shock device on the dog’s collar to stop it from acting out. Or… as per Willow’s line of dialogue moments before Spike says his line quoted above: “He had trouble performing”. In metaphor: it is castration or erectile dysfunction. So that’s what not having a working chip covers. Now not having a soul. Later on in Season 6 in the episode ‘Seeing Red’, Buffy and Spike’s secret sexual affair becomes violent sexually and Spike attempts to rape Buffy after she makes the decision that she will no longer sleep with him. I have said several times now that I was not okay with seeing this scene. I hate it so much because I know that while Spike’s nature as a soulless vampire is inherently violent - his character, even soulless, would never stoop as low as rape due to his own experiences with sexual abuse. And that scene puts me off in many ways because I know with every fiber of my being that it is character assassination. Spike would not knowingly rape Buffy. Once again - the writers are telling us that a soulless vampire has no morals - no sense of morality at all. Well, that may be true with other soulless vampires... But it isn’t with Spike. Yes, Spike is selfish. Yes, Spike is violent. Yes, Spike is abusive. Spike is all of these negative and immoral things. I can agree with that. But at the same time - Spike CHOOSES who he is at every moment. The fact he doesn’t have a soul has nothing to do with what he does or how he acts. It doesn’t because he can do good things by choice too. Being “evil” or “good” is a choice. It’s not inherent. Sometimes Spike defies his nature, other times he follows it…. But it is always HIS CHOICE what he does. Not having a soul has no bearing on his actions and therefore his actions in ‘Seeing Red’ are assassination of his character and not a development of it. So I flat out disagree with Joss Whedon that the character had to have a soul to be a good person. But despite all that, it definitely does make for an interesting character arc that Spike needs a chip to not hit or bite humans. It makes sense to me because it is in his nature to be violent - to commit acts of violence - not because he is soulless… But because he is a vampire. I don’t think the writers make a very strong case for these two things being one in the same in Season 6 after the beauty that is his character starting off in it. After they make it apparent that CHOICE is the factor that makes him either beautiful or ugly, not his nature. Voluntary do-goodness starts off performative so that he can survive. But eventually it becomes genuine trust and faith and… love. It’s true, Spike can be violent but he can also be very loving too. To me, this definitely makes him more man than monster no matter what Joss decides to paint him as half-way through Season 6 without any rhyme or reason… with nothing but spite for the shippers. So as for the relationship between Spike and Buffy turning romantic/sexual - I think it makes a lot of sense that eventually their passions would overcome their sensibilities as they are essentially the same supernatural entity/spirit. That is to say - they are the shadow and light of each other. So it makes total sense to me that when they fight about who is more fucked up than who when it comes to this in the final scene, they end up fucking each other. In Season 6, it could be argued that they’re both a little soulless, a little chipped… a little less human than before. Their relationship is one born from violence so it only makes sense that they would revert back to it when they realize that they can carry on their violent “dance”. Now literally and obviously portrayed as sex. And I’m not saying I ship it because it is toxic - but dear god is it riveting to watch them smash that house to ruin.

Spike's and Buffy's relationship is doomed because Spike doesn't have a soul. Spike can easily love and date another vampire because vampires don't share the same morales as humans do. Buffy's and Spike's view of the world will constantly clash due to that. And since Buffy is very opinionated and direct, she calls Spike all those things (evil, a thing, disgusting). I mean, it's pretty clear she is attracted to him and they do share a connection but it's so mindblowing to her that she is attracted to a souless vampire - she needs to constantly dehumanize him by insulting him. Spike on the other hand is a different case. He clearly loves Buffy but since he doesn't have a soul he loves Buffy like he loves Dru - in a twisted vampire way. He wants Buffy to be happy but he wants to be the reason for her happiness which is really selfish and manipulative but really makes sense due to his nature. People who brush aside that fact always confused me. Like...spuffy is so complicated, they bush boundaries, they are toxic, they are both abusive towards each other even though Spike thinks he has Buffy's best interested at heart (but he clearly acting selfish towards her) and Buffy is self-destractive. She pushes Spike away, but then comes to him again which messed with both of their heads. It's a good television after all. And it's compelling.
