I've always thought that Tara's death was the true cost of Buffy's resurrection. When this happened, it was an incredibly shocking gut punch, but after gathering myself, it made sense that this would be the end result of using mystical means to defy the laws of nature. Willow is extremely smart and very powerful, and I think that made her look down her nose at magic instead of respecting it as the primal force that it is. She was more concerned with if she could and didn't stop to think if she should. I'm paraphrasing, but it's like Spike said at the beginning of the season: "That's the thing about magic. There's always consequences."
@Pathfinder197
@Pathfinder197 Год назад
Tara’s death was the price, and so was Willow’s innocence as we saw her metaphorically sacrificing her innocence when she sacrificed poor Bambi in the season opener -along with what comes next. I never thought of Willow as looking down her nose at magic, but she did see it as a necessary tool for the Hellmouth where the laws of nature were defied all the time. She didn’t have Tara’s grounding in it as something spiritual, but did she really have the luxury of not using it growing up in the war zone as she did? Pretty sure she opened a door that would’ve been tough to close when she did the spell to return Angel’s soul - and from a hospital bed after coming out of a coma at that. You could argue the path was kinda set after that, but you can also argue that path was necessary - both metaphorically and in the surface-level of the storytelling.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
Well in that case she should have died in ‘Tabula Rasa’ instead of ‘Seeing Red’ because her death did not come across as a price of anything. It came across as an accident. ‘Tabula Rasa’ was tonally a comedy so they wouldn’t have done it. But the writers originally intended Tara’s death to happen much earlier than this episode. And so if what you said was originally the thinking behind it, then I say that would have been a much more respectful end to her character than a complete unpredictable oblivious accident. I will never say that her death was wrong. But I will always say the way it happened was.

@barbarabaker1457
@barbarabaker1457 Год назад
Well some ways that makes him more evil. The vampire even demons tend to be a representation of what you're like without your soul your conscience a part of your brain literally being removed that can tell you right from wrong and can feel more empathy when you hurt someone else without necessarily the self-serving reason of "they won't like me anymore," or precious object mentality like Spike. Somebody with a soul is someone who isn't impaired who is capable of a conscience but chooses to ignore right for wrong . We all do that to varying degrees of course but if you can pair the same actions I think it's more evil if you did it with a soul because you were capable of choosing clearly. Kind of like if someone schizophrenic I'm not going to assume they're the same monster as someone completely within their faculties committing the same crimes.

We all share your pain. I'm just gonna do the same thing as with Hell's Bells and point out the small things that are just nice in this episode. 1. Xander being pissed at Buffy in this episode is almost like him reverting to season one and two, before he gathers himself, and that character development shines through as he actually takes the initiative to come to her and apologise for once, and the way they hug it out is incredibly sweet. 2. Anya ranting to that girl at the beginning is sad but also kind of hilarious and Emma should have all the awards (all the actors should tbh). And 3. Dawn going to Spike and sticking up for her sister is awesome because we love Dawn not judging Buffy and just being supportive after she found out last episode.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
And that’s character consistency and the mark of his character development. He was about to fall back on old habits that he grew out of and then almost immediately saw through it. His self-awareness improved tremendously because he was able to catch and call himself out. Something S2 or S3 Xander never would have done. He has always been brave but he never was self-reflective until S4. At least it was never showcased until then that he could be. And that’s a mark of excellent character writing. This is what makes ‘BtVS’ character-driven. The characters learn through their flaws, faults and failures and it makes them incredibly relatable and resonatable. We’re able to watch them and think “That could be me if I was in the same situation”. And S6 in particular is all about that learning process. The characters feel real. Even the worst ones… Like Warren. We’re meant to learn from them.
@faithvictoria9014
@faithvictoria9014 Год назад
@@Girl4Music exactly! It's so incredibly realistic that he would almost fall back into his old ways and then catch himself out and change them. I understand people who don't like Xander in the early seasons but personally seeing his dramatic character growth and huge personal change starting in season 4 made me like him all the more. Btvs is so good at taking characters to their lowest depths and then seeing how they will fight their way back to the top.
@Girl4Music

@@faithvictoria9014 Yep. Like Willow. I always say the whole point to her arc is for her to hit rock bottom to climb back to the top again because the only direction you can go when you’re at the lowest of low points is up again. Which is why I say her power corruption, magic addiction and the vengeance trip Dark Willow arc is not a regression of her character like many believe. It’s a development of it. That’s her lowest of low points.

It hurts watching this episode just as much as it did watching it way back when it aired. Just like Joyce's death, Tara's hits extra hard because it wasn't supernatural. It was a gun, shot by a human. Sometimes those deaths hit the most in the Buffyverse because so many of the deaths caused by demons or that were more supernatural feel like they played a purpose. Jenny's, Angel's, Buffy's (second), but then there are Joyce and Tara, both characters who were seen as really positive, pure of heart characters, who are killed in ways that could happen to any of us. It makes it feel more real, and hits extra hard. I cried right along with you watching your reactions, and I've seen the series a million times at this point!

Such a painful episode. If you go back and rewatch “Restless” at some point, note the moment early in Willow’s dream sequence when she worriedly goes to the window and looks out, saying “there’s something out there” and this look of foreboding comes over Tara’s face. Bone chilling.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
I mean that canonically is supposed to represent something else but of course ‘Restless’ is timeless because of the endless interpretations on what it means and represents. So that definitely could be a valid way of interpreting that little moment. There was someone that mentioned the blue top Willow was looking for in ‘The Body’ is like a foreshadowing to Tara’s death too because she wears a blue top when it happens. And choice of clothing is always a big deal with ‘BtVS’. There’s always an intentional symbolic reasoning behind it. Especially with Willow.
@Pathfinder197
@Pathfinder197 Год назад
@@Girl4Music That’s part of the joy and pain of BtVS - everything can be viewed on the surface level, which is compelling in itself, before even getting into the endless metaphors. My personal head cannon is still that Joss had to have meant for viewers to make those associations after seeing 6x19. And mentioning the blue sweater scene from “The Body” made me remember Alyson Hannigan’s wrenching delivery when she says/cries “Tara” with this raspy tremble in her voice in that scene just before the kiss. A visceral moment.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
@@Pathfinder197 Tara is her rock and her temperance. Every time I hear that shaky, desperate “Tara” in her voice (because she does say her name like that several times) I think about how much of a cornerstone to living Tara was for Willow. Willow did not live in the real world without one. Without a crutch. She was always mentally somewhere else - her ideal. Even if no one was with her. And the way Tara grounded her and brought her back to reality and herself made her reliant on her and co-dependent to her as much as magic did. In a way, Tara was also her addiction. You could call it “lust” but it’s not sexual gratification Willow needs the most from Tara - although that is part of it. It’s emotional gratification. Tara emotionally gratifies Willow. And Willow wants more and more of it to the point where she is willing to abuse her to get it. That acceptance and that validation from Tara becomes all-important to her. And, as a result, Tara - the person - fades away as her autonomy does. In all truth, Tara was better without Willow. But I’m a shipper and it’s a TV show. So… 😆😚
@Pathfinder197

@@Girl4Music Tara was certainly a grounding force for Willow, and it’s no shock that the girl with the perennially absent parents would form an emotionally addictive bond with Earth Mother Tara. Tara's death is the one thing I will never forgive or get over. 3 seasons were spent taking a character who had an ICREDIBLE arc. From her first scene to where her life was ripped away from us. With a damn bullet accidentally shot by Warren? Tara was pure, genuine, empathetic, and eventually a fucking confident LEGEND! She was written in a way that truly made the audience fall in love with her. Only to have her die in the most horrible, meaningless way. Tara is and will always be my favorite character. Both she and the audience deserved a better death, since she was clearly used to make Willow the true big bad of Season 6. I'm still upset that they didn't have her go out a hero. She earned that and so much more The character and Amber Benson were robbed... period

This possibly the episode that fans hate the most and for good reason. It is sad, disturbing and tragic, but is without doubt a brilliant episode in the overall series. As we were saying how Dark S6 was, well it doesn't get much darker than this. We have attempted rape, murder and Willow finally being broken in her spiral to the dark side after Tara's shooting. Some brilliant scenes in this episode too, Dawn's conversation with Spike, and Warren and Xander's confrontation in the Bronze. Regarding Spike and Buffy in the bathroom it reminds me very much to of S3 episode Consequences when Faith sexually assaults and tries to actually murder Xander, we have to remember Faith had a soul doing this, Spike did not, an interesting juxtaposition here. In S3 Consequences it is Faith that has the power and Xander is a weak innocent, showing again sexual assault is about power. This is of course no excuse for Spike, but the writers are reminding us again that Vampires are soulless creatures with no control or remorse for their actions. James Marsters gave an interview to The Tellyshow at Dublin Comicon a few years ago talking about this episode, and how he didn't want to do it, and was deeply affected by it having to have therapy afterwards as it affected him so much. The needless death of Tara is so shocking at the end, we see in Willow's eyes a complete change now seeking ultimate rage and revenge for what Warren has done. Here is the interview James gave if you watch it from 10.46 in, he talks about the bathroom scene, it is ok to watch this you will not be spoiled if you watch it from 10.46 to 15.42, he reveals an incredible secret about the writing for this, remember to stop at 15.42 it's a must watch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rkO3bIARMdc.html

Thank You! Finally, someone else who feels the same way I do about Buffy and Spike's "relationship". I've never supported it, and not just because I'm an Angel/Buffy stan either. I always only encounter people who love Spike and ship him and Buffy together. Like even now with metoo and cancel culture people still ship them together, and I'm over here just like "I love Spike too but did y'all forget that Spike tried to R**e Buffy once, how do you people not see how toxic this relationship is?" Also, I'm convinced that Buffy only got with Spike to vent her trauma and PTSD and no one can convince me otherwise cause she's been through alot in her life since becoming a slayer, in past seasons and more recently at this point in the show, and it's not like she can go to therapy, so she needs someway to get all that out, she just made the mistake of choosing Spike as her means of doing it. Later on I think their relationship is more her using him as a rebound. Like Buffy's relationship with Angel might not have been that great either but it was better than her relationship with Spike, at least Angel never tried to sexually assault her and it wasn't violent either. Even as Angelous, he did alot of horrible things to her but none of those was sexual assault. What does that say about Spike that he was the one to do that and not the obsessed torture master Angelous? Also I agree with you about Buffy not being allowed to make mistakes.
@x-man9473
@x-man9473 Год назад
You're way off base with that Angel argument. Angel was never put in a predicament to do that to Buffy. In the very episode that he turned evil. He grabbed her and kissed her then threw her to the wall, traumatizing her. In later episodes he touched her in her sleep and drew pictures of her sleeping for her to see when she woke up. He has 0 reason to violently assault her. Evil Angel hates Buffy and was trying to harm her emotionally. Spike is infatuated with Buffy and in his twisted head thought them sleeping together again would revive their relationship. If you're a Buffy/Angel shipper that's fine. But don't throw in these fake comparisons when criticizing the Buffy/Spike relationship.

Because it’s always the most shocking and hurtful. Tara was the personification of purity. Take away what’s pure and you’re left with the hopelessness that anything can ever be right or good again. It’s an effective metaphor and it’s what makes Willow no longer care about the world if the world can never be truly a good place to be without light. Her world is now all painted black. Like the song. Faith Victoria has an excellent video for this. Using a cover of the song and it’s themes to truly understand what’s going on with Willow after this point. TARA: “All dark, all dark.”

This is still considered one of the worst examples of "dead lesbian syndrome" on TV. Joss claims that Oz would have died here if he had still been with Willow, but I highly doubt it would have been after spending an entire day in bed like this.
@AnatoleVGC
@AnatoleVGC Год назад
Honestly? I am sure this arc was planned for Oz. It might not go that exactly way, but in rewatchs I noticed Oaz and Tara arc with willow are very similar. Oz was starting to be concerned with magic just like tara, they just postponed to build it up again. I understand the "kill your gays" thing being gay myself. But I understand the narrative here, cause it was built up since season 2 finale. They might have make it worse because of it being with Tara, but it was all clearly moving this direction
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
That’s the thing. It’s not the death that’s the problem. It’s the way the death happens, where it happens and why it happens that is.

I always say when it comes to joss shows beware, if it looks like your favourite character is about to get a well deserved happily ever after’ they are 100% about to be killed in a brutal fashion, happens in the angel show too but I won’t say more since i dont remember if you’ve gotten that far in yet 😢

Naj, I’m so sorry that this episode was so painful for you and I was literally crying with you. I’m also sorry that you have to read comments from people who are bending over backwards, forwards and sideways trying to find any reason to excuse such a violent sexual assault. Please know that not all Buffy fans think this way.
@Girl4Music
@Girl4Music Год назад
I never excuse rape/sexual assault. In fact I’m constantly bringing it up. Not just with Spike but Willow, Faith, Veruca, Warren, Angel. I call it all out no matter who it is because all of it is horrific and unnecessary. There’s some serious issues with rape/sexual assault and consent in this show and much of it just gets glossed over as if it means nothing. This situation that occurred in this episode is one of the very few times where they actually acknowledge and address it for being what it actually is. But they only do it because it develops the plot. Not because it is attempted rape. They couldn’t care less about that because they never seem to do so with anyone else unless they’re the obvious villain.
