Here is a quick tech tip explaining how to tell the difference between a Beetle transmission and a Bus transmission on your Air-cooled VW Beetle or Dune Buggy.
Beetle (Type 1) transmissions are identified by the non-removable bell housing, and come in Swing Axle and IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) variants.
Bus (Type 2) transmissions are identified by the removable bell housing, and come in 3, 5, and 6-rib variants, as counted by the number of ribs on the top of the transaxle case. 3 and 5 ribs are known as 002 transaxles, 6-rib transmissions are known as a 091 from a late-model bay window, or a 094 side-shift from a Vanagon.
Bus transmissions overall have stronger internals, and have larger, stronger CV's - 100mm in a Bus transmission versus a Beetle's 90mm CV joints.

Great Video. Good information. Do you have any info on replacement gears? Maybe a taller 4th for highway driving. Any information would be appreciated. Cheers

The freeway flyer gear takes 4th from a .87 to a .82. We have used German freeway flyer 4th gears available for about $80. What transaxle are you running?

I'm interested in knowing which bus transmissions are the most straightforward swap into a 1974 bug. I'm assuming this would be a 72-74 trans, but I don't know for certain. Still trying to find a writeup for my specific model and trans choice.

Other than the stronger internals and larger cv. What else is different, especially between the 3 rib and 6 rib. the gear ratios the same?

I have a sandrail with w 6 rib mated to a type 4 engine but i want to switch to type 1. I've been reading online and from what i gathered, in order to mate my 6 rib trans onto a type 1 engine, I would have to cut 1/2" off the input shaft? Or is there another way other than switching shafts or cutting it? As the links I read are over 10 years old. I figured they might have came out with a sort or "plug and play " way now.

You'll have to cut the input shaft 1/2", and you'll need longer studs on the engine since the 6-rib has a thicker bellhousing: dunebuggywarehouse.com/vw-type-1-and-type-4-engine-starter-bolt-10mm-x-1-45.html

Have a cuestion? The transmission super beetle and standard beetle is identical the same? ( Internal )

The single side cover 73-79 Beetle transmissions were identical. Some small changes from 68-72 between Super and Standard - mainshaft splines, first gear, final ratios.

What transmission is better and good for a sand rail
@DuneBuggyWarehouse
@DuneBuggyWarehouse 3 года назад
Depends on power and how much it would be getting beat on. Plenty of sand rails use a type 1 transaxle, but a 3, 5, or 6-rib Bus trans tends to be the most popular from what we see. For 200+ hp you should start to consider something like a Mendeola MD4/5, and with a big turbo or V8 you're in Mendeola S4 or even Albins territory.

@@DuneBuggyWarehouse thanks for right now I have a stock 1600 motor but would a 6 rib trans do anything different
@DuneBuggyWarehouse
@DuneBuggyWarehouse 3 года назад
@@rubenganguiano1692 The bus trans has a stronger ring & pinion and lower gearing. If you don't beat on the sand rail hard it may not be worth a conversion.

would it be possible to mount the bus transmission to a beetle? if so would there be any differences besides the stronger internals in the bus transmission?
@DuneBuggyWarehouse
@DuneBuggyWarehouse 6 лет назад
Different model and year bus transmissions have different gear ratios, and the 094 side shift has a stronger full-size reverse gear, good for powerful buggies. The swap itself is not just a straight-forward swap, you'll need to move the engine, swap axles, cut & fabricate. The best tutorial for changing from a Type 1 transmission to a Type 2 transmission is on the Samba: www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88852&highlight=
