Build a Brick Style Cutting Board

In this woodworking video, I'm making an end grain brick pattern cutting board, and detailing all the steps necessary to do so. End grain cutting boards are a bit more challenging to build but well worth it in the end. They last a long time and chefs love to cut with them. The brick layered pattern was made using walnut and maple wood, which look fantastic together.

This cutting board was given to me and I love it. It is the last project my little brother completed before joining the angels in heaven. I still can't bring myself to cut on it (even though I know he would want me to). It sure looks beautiful as a charcuterie board. He would be happy to know so many of you found this video helpful! Oh my! I just finished watching and commenting on the video and scrolling thru the comments I found your note. I am terribly sorry for your loss. Your brother was truly talented and he did such a nice job explaining the process. While watching I was admiring his presentation and his admission of the mistakes made and what he did to correct them. I will say a prayer for you and your family. No joke. Seriously, where's your dust collection for that thing muchless a respirator?? ESPECIALLY with walnut. That dust is going to cause some serious problems for you down the line. Walnut is really bad in that regard.

It looks beautiful. Thanks for the realistic (as in non-fluff and non-gimmicky) presentation. I appreciate it. Last night, 11 October 2023 A.D., I did some math to make a walnut counter top, and at about $3K, that's not happening, but it's still nice that other people can have beautiful things, lol.

Great job! Here's a tip I've picked up on gluing, stack same pieces together vs alternating them. This will allow you to glue all the bricks at once and all the mortar at once. This saves a ton of time on glue up. Then no worries of glue sag. Hope that helps and thanks for making such a great video!

Your brick wall cutting board turned out beautiful and I'm in the process of doing two of them as we speak! One cherry with maple and the other cherry with walnut border! I've made many cutting boards and if I MAY make a big suggestion too you! IF you want that baby butt smooth finish, JUST PRIOR to putting on the oil, WET IT DOWN with water, ( This raises the fiber in the wood) than go back re- sand with 220 or 320 grit, Than put the oil on!! GUARENTEED SUPER SMOOTH FINISH!! When you put the oil on I could actually see and hear the fibers raising as you put the oil on! Try it, you will be much more satisfied!! This process also STOPS the wood from getting rough feeling after its first hand wash! Thanks for the video, Great job, new sub!! 👍

Thank you for adding a visual diagram of your cut list! Along with taking the "chess board" approach while making the brick pattern. Opposed to making a bunch of small little cuts.

Beautiful. Good idea to spray board with water to raise the grain between sandings and to soak the board in a oil bath after. Saw it on another channel.

Very nice, thanks. You did a good job of explaining. I've watched a few videos on brick style cutting boards that seemed to gloss over how they get the thin wide "mortar" strips and you helped to explain! I'll be making one quite soon with paduak bricks and maple mortar.

Very nice project. In fact, I think your procedure was the most concisely explained of all the brick pattern end-grain boards I've seen on here... The only detraction was your dust collection and mask (or lack thereof)... Otherwise, well done!

Anyone have any ideas on how to flatten the second set of maple strips? I don't have a drum sander but I do have a 13 inch planer, but if I put them through they will go through cross grain. Should I place on a flat plywood board and put them through my planer diagonally?

Super nice cutting board, great work, But dude get some dust collection on that drum sander, a few years down the road you'll wish you did..Harbor Freight makes one for a couple of hundred that works just as good as any.

Great video. Quick question about the wax paper. Whats the reason for it when you glued and clamped it? Is it so that the clamp doesn't get glue on it? Might be a dumb question but im not sure what the answer is so im asking. Either way, great video

FYI. Cleaning down a butchers block can involve washing then sprinkling salt on the surface which is then used as an antibacterial abrasive. The board should be scrubbed or scraped. Also making them lighter since it will predominantly be used by persons wh🤔o are not accustomed to shifting large pieces of lumber. Perhaps measuring the width of a kitchen sink or basin before before calculating the dimensions of a kitchen board.

Very nice. I found it easier to buy a plastic container, a gallon of mineral oil and drop the Board in and let it soak. And after the first sanding spray water on the board to raise the grain then hit it with 320 or 400 grit. Smooth as glass. Nice shop. Envious of planer, bandsaw, drum sander. Do you prefer one brand over another? I see Jet Laguna Grizzly

I feel the same way about the sander dust. Surprised some who seems as organized as he is would do that. Black Walnut dust is not good for you to be breathing. Otherwise, enjoyable video.
