In this video, I share a taste of what went into building out off-grid prepper homestead. I bring you along to look into many of the house's systems and structures. This includes heating, cooling, pantry, root cellar, fallout shelter, greenhouse, and many other aspects of building with wood, stone, and concrete. Includes a special Wes Anderson opening video! :)

It's the one that has a title about CP going to go off-grid. I thought they did a nice job of putting it together with some clips I provided him. It gave my channel a subs boost, but still didn't seem enough to jump-start the algorithm or anything. I've had a few videos since Nate's video that had as high as 40%+ click-through rates that still hit abrupt (presumably) artificial glass ceilings and got killed in their tracks. I noticed your recent community post only had my comment and your replies to it. Feels like your channel and mine both might both be suffering from some special love and care from RU-vid. I mean with all your subs, NO ONE other than me saw your post and wanted to comment? I presume if some of your people had seen it, at least some would have left a a comment.

We won’t run to (as Christine Anderson from the EU calls them) 15 minute ghettos. We re thinking of building a floorless chicken coup we can move around to have free range chickens
@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
I used a floorless chicken run all last year to protect our small flock of 6 birds. We recently started letting them just free range around the property on their own. It does raise the risk of a predator getting one of them now and then, but I feel it's a better quality of life for them. After a few hours, the mobile coop would definitely need to be moved because they would exhaust the greens in their 8x8 foot area. I feel they're happier being just let out - but of course. they're not as safe. I guess it's the same balance as it is for people, more freedom or more safety.

For this channel, I keep my location a bit vague. I'm in New England though, so not too far from you. PE is a nice state, but I can understand a motivation to move. New subscriber here- am in love with what you have achieved on your homestead so far- well done. Question: does using your wood stove to cook in the summer make the house uncomfortably warm? Or does that system of taking the hot air upstairs down under the concrete floor mitigate that?
@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
Great question. The answer is that I DON'T use the woodstove for cooking in the summer. It actually makes cooking (using the electric range fed by the solar power system) a little more regimented. I like to cook while we still have sun on the panels and with the tilt of the house slightly to the east, we really start losing summer sun back behind the house by about 4:30 or 5 each day. So I need to be sure to start dinner by that time in the summer when I cook with the electric range and oven. In time, I'd like to make a nicer outdoor kitchen so I can do basic cooking and grilling "whenever the frick I feel like" it in the summer... can you tell this is a sensitive topic for me? ;) JK! But yeah, we have to give it some thought when we're cooking with the sun.

@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
Hey David, Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the series. I def plan to make a season 3. I would like to have had it done already, but I love having guests RU-vid preppers on the series and everyone's in high gear prepping for WW3 right now, so people don't tend to have a lot of spare time to participate. But I definitely plan to make the 3rd (and final) season to wrap up the story. As to your story question, I tried to dance around it a bit. You'll recall that there was some guy with a crossbow and a red sweatshirt (very poor choice for camouflage) stalking my character at the end of season 1. Then my character has an arrow shot at him in the last episode of the season. In the following season, it's occurring many months later and is not an immediate continuation of moment where season 1 left off. I tried to sprinkle some hints in the second season about what might have gone down in that last episode of season 1. I can share those little hints here if you like, or if you don't want for me to spoil it for you, you could see if you could find the hints yourself in the 2nd season. One place you could look to is my character's clothing he's wearing. He also references something that might shed light on that event in the first monolog he records for the first episode of season 2. let me know if you'd like more brread crumbs, or just for me to spill the beans. ;)

So far the tiny fence has been enough to redirect those animals to other areas to forage, but I'm under no illusion that there isn't a measure of luck in there. Will soap in your grey water thing mess up your planets?
@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
That's the big question that everyone always wonders about... though most people are more concerned about plants than planets! ;) It's a good question. Most soaps probably WOULD be adding junk into that ecosystem that wouldn't be too welcome. What we use are biodegradable natural soaps. I've always used them (presuming that they were probably better for my body's health as well), so it wasn't anything for us to change up. I use Dr. Bronner soap, Sapo Hill Soap, and Amber uses Avalon Organics shampoo and conditioner. I used gray water at my old homestead (which I presently rent out to a family). They just use crap soap in the kitchen sink which drains to the greenhouse there and when I went there recently, the greenhouse at that place was a freaking DEAD ZONE. When I was there using my soaps, the greenhouse area that got watered was bursting with life. So yeah, it seems to make a difference. The only thing that I put down my current drains that I feel is questionable is that I occasionally use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers for cleaning the tub and shower. IDK if they're necessarily bad, but given that they're made of some sort of synthetic polymer and that bits wear off and go down the drain as part of the cleaning process, I have my doubts on how 100% great of a practice that is... but to be honest, the biggest reason I'm suspicious about them is that they work SO well to clean. It seems too good to be true - there's gotta be a down-side if you get my feeling there. I hope that answer helps.
@justinm3259
@justinm3259 Год назад
@@PraxisPrepper oh yah, pretty interesting. I figured all that stuff would build up after awhile of use.
@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
@@justinm3259 From what I could see, the switch to the synthetic soaps took down the garden plants pretty quickly once the new people were in. I presume some amount of synthetic material could be handled by a gray water garden, but "normal people" level use of the synthetic stuff seems to be unhandleable.

Does it stick out like a sore thumb? That would depend on the area in which it's situated. Did I show the area in this video such that one could determine whether this house sticks out? I did not. Can someone in your position know that they're correct in making a statement like that based on what facts they knew? No. Could you be right by accident? Yes. Are you? Having not shared any info on the surrounding area, only I know for sure... but I'd be a pretty dumb prepper if I created the situation that you imagined and described wouldn't I?

A fantastic video I would have to reverse all your information being in the southern hemisphere
@PraxisPrepper
@PraxisPrepper Год назад
Yeah, north=south, south=north. I've thought about that very thing and I don't know if I moved to the southern hemisphere if I'd ever get used to the idea of the warm breezes coming down from the north or a cold south wind. We develop such associations with where we grow up that the north for me is always the cool direction and the south is always the warm one.

You're only the second person to have noticed what I was trying to do there. I think most people just think it's me being weird for weird's sake. ;)

you can’t call it a prepper house if it’s built out of wood my man. little piggy will blow that paper house down. consider a stronger material like steel or concrete that’ll keep the big bad wolf out.

I understand your perspective, but I'm not sure that preparedness is as narrow as you suggest. A house like this is useful for a wide variety of situations. Many of ancestors of the past (who were 100% all preppers by default) lived in wooden houses. And while it's true that a wooden house can't withstand wildfire (uncommon in my area), arson (currently uncommon, but that could change), or gun fire, a structure like this is beneficial under most circumstances. Even a structure built of concrete or steel has limitations. Both will withstand fire, but (unless you're talking about thick steel plates) only concrete will withstand gunshots. Neither can withstand a tank, nor (in all likelihood a prolonged siege by dedicated marauders). And a direct strike from a meteor or missile, also are unlikely to be survivable. So whatever structure one chooses, nothing is guaranteed; it just comes down to when one feels that they've covered enough bases. In the end, the only real 100% plan is an inner understanding that whatever provisions have been made, the need to start over from scratch might be required (paired with the knowledge to make a go at doing so). Let me know how that thinking hits you. I know it's a common idea that to be prepared for the dangers of the world, it's an all or nothing choice. I don't see it that way though.

I'll miss some of the discussions we've had. Obviously you're free to stop watching my videos, but I feel that (since we've interacted before and I have regard for your thoughts and welfare) I think it's not a good idea in general to stop listening to someone who you've found helpful in the past due to them having a connection with someone that you don't respect. It seems like you're tossing out something of value for... I'm not sure what purpose? Like I said, you should do what you think is right, but disconnecting with people based on friends or associates of that person seems like a way to make the world less-connected as opposed to more connected - and in a world where people fragment up into their hive-mind camps so much like they do, I don't think following that lead is a good idea either for one's self, or the society at large. If you do stop popping over to my videos, I'll miss your insights. I'll keep doing what I've always done... which is generally dull content about doing actual things that most people aren't interested in. ;) Best luck to you either way. But consider what I said. Our world needs more people to bridge divides vs. build walls between us.
