Today we are going to Build a Supercapacitor Solar System in Minutes!
Before I get too involved on the Humacao cases I wanted to make this project as a celebration for hitting the 1,000 subscribers on this channel.
This is a Solar Generator that works without batteries and uses Super Capacitors as the main energy storage.
A system like this one can help many families around the world by providing clean energy during the day an run many appliances like a fridge, ice maker and many more...

Integrate with one 12v 100ah battery and it could run for days. I love this when you prove ideas like this work.

Exactly! You need batteries to run off at night, and the solar for daytime. Of course, the more batteries the better and longer run time. You can parallel connect the batteries and supercaps all the time too.

I dont care about the night, i have electricity for the night.. i just wanna reduce my electricity cost by running things on solar during the day time and i thought super capacitors will be perfect for this. And when i searched i saw your video on RU-vid. You already have the proof of concept! Thanks man.. Do you mind shearing the schematic for the super capacitor board please?

Some switches and busbars added and you can use the capacitors in the day while some batterys charge and then near sundown when the caps drain flip them off and flip the batterys on.

Thank you for sharing 🙏....batteries need long time to charge and long time to discharge. Whereas capacitors faster charge faster discharge. So they can work together. You didn't mention "KW"..

For got to tell. That the truck stop. Marker lights (the ones with three led lamps) make better than "nothing"ceiling lamps. there is enough light to not run into the furniture. And great pourch lights. They make poweroutages which happens here often in my Tennessee hamlet safer scares the thieves away.

I have a 4.3 cf apartment size fridge that we ran with two golf cart batteries (225ah) and 200 watts. It works well as long as you have 3-4 sunny days per week. The trouble is that with this setup it is hard to get an equalization charge in to keep the capacity at peak level. Adding a third panel for 300 watts work much better and allows for monthly maintenance.

An exercise bike hooked to an alternator could charge the caps, possibly wind power or a hydro wheel.

I do not use any expensive & sensitive batteries anymore. I use 4x supercaps banks à 6x500F. For my 24V inverter, two in serie and other two in parallel. A 4000W pure shine inverter works great @ 30V. A 2500W watercocker is no problem for these powerful powercaps. Wow!

6 2.7v500f in series/ parallel to get 12-16v only give you 83f. If you run 2 500f in parallel you get 1000f but 2.7v if in series you get 5.4v but 250uf @@Teknopottu

I noticed the video is 5 years old, as my practical Hobby, I'm in the process of adding a super capacitor subsystem in parallel with my 12 volt 2000 watt solar system. I've been running my refrigerator with several different batteries including a 50 amp, 100 amp and 200 amp. When I first purchased the 100 amp battery and charge them full, they produced enough amperage to get my refrigerator started consistently. As the battery has aged I'm noticing issues with the refrigerator startup. I'm looking for advice regarding what capacity of a super capacitor would be the best for this specific application. I'm not real clear on charging the capacitors and would appreciate any feedback on ways to charge the super capacitors from the solar systems output. Thank You

Took me a while to come up with the word solar capacitor. I believe solar capacitors have a longer life than batteries. I only want to use batteries in the middle of the night.

You have battery modules with costs of the order of $200 per kWh and 5k to 20k cycles warranty...what is the function of a capacitor bank? Is it enhanced capture or storage? Get to this earlier in the presentation please

GD IDEA. YOU MAY NEED A BIGGER INVERTER. ALSO I SAW WERE THEY ADD CAPACITORS TO BATTERY BANKS FOR THE POWER NEEDED.

Could use old 12v car batteries, essentially a 12v car battery cells degrade, but It's still capable of storing and producing voltage to charge < super capacitor bank > this is where the super capacitors could take over as long as the car battery is over 2v the super capacitors could still draw usable power? I make this assumption as i did this before when desperate, by connecting 2 old 12v battery's in parallel e.g. 8v + 9v to jump start my car ;)

Hello brother, (Me Hermano), Greetings from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Great video and you are definitely on to something very powerful. I don’t know much, but you have my wheels turning here. 😉 You run into the nighttime usage problem. Did you look into charging a lithium ion/lithium iron or better yet (maybe) a large super capacitor, as a reserve/standby power source, that only charges in the day, and then is your power source at night? That is a great idea! so when there is sun you will have plenty of power, are there any really cheap batteries that cannot handle alot of current but have enough storage to make it run small things during the night? like have the capacitors handle the surge power but the batteries handle the long term amp draw?

Supercaps are very compact burst of power i.e current. They ve however very low power density. Your project would be exponentially stable when a compatible battery is combined. Hybrid Supercap- batteries are more robust than either of the storage media.

@@JavierCamacho Alright. Tried similar setup myself with 12, 2.7V, 3000F (12v system) Nesscaps and an inverter. It powered a LCD tv but sagged with overcast as expected. Nothing to discredit your video, just that some ppl with no electrical engineering background are ignorant of supercaps vs battery bank functionalities; and they are very hard to educate once they see a video.

@@Han445 I'm currently rethinking this project sense I found myself with the need to have more solar panels to power a few mining rigs but I don't want to build a large battery just to use it or to buy grid tie inverters because of the many red tape and regulations. Makes more sense to build a large solar array with a supercaps bank with a fast switching relay to a battery bank or grid.

Hi. In an emergency you can keep the fridge cold like this. Put some bottles of water In the fridge for thermal ballast. During the day, turn the fridge down to its coldest setting to chill the contents and the ballast. At night, switch off the power, it will stay cold with the door shut while you sleep. Repeat next day.

Hi Javier. The 600 watt inverter will draw 50A when it is running a 600W load. The caps store charge Q=CV Cs in series divide, like resistors in parallel, so C of the 6 caps in series is really 83 farads. 83Fx12V is about 1000 coulombs of charge. Since charge Q=IxT we calc 1000C/50A=20 seconds for one string of 6 caps., so the more strings of 6 you can put in that box, the longer you can run the inverter. 2 strings of caps in parallel should hold up for 40 sec. 600Wx40sec is 24000 watt-sec, but you want watt hrs! Need to divide by 3600 sec in an hr. 24000/3600 is 6 watt-hr. Thats a 6 watt bulb for an hr. Need many more 6 cap strings to run the cooler all night. Also, should have 600watts of panels to keep the 600 watt inverter running. Numbers dont lie.

Great stuff Javier! The only limitation with Caps is the discharge rate. They can't sustain long run like batteries. I've tried all gymnastics with them. My next experiments with SupCaps will be geared towards 12VDC fridges, irons and other household appliances. Then no need for inverters. A Pulse mode circuit could be used at the output to secure more running time. By the way, is it a genuine Pure Sinewave Inverter you are using? Where did U buy it? Thumbs up Javier. We are on the right track.

Your on the right track. Not to say I have not gone dry on my home made system.(solar/lead acid) how ever it's quite trustworthy. It supports, tv, radio, computer fan, and house lighting needs for 14 years.( Never bought a dime's worth of Ac here) Keep it up om. And via con dios. De kv4li. Ps never turn down old computers as they have the most perfect fan. Low consumption on DC and seems they never die. That's right they get tossed out without regard of its assets. And don't be afraid to box up old auto radios add speakers you have a home entertainment center that just keeps giving. 73

Pienso colocar 12 paneles de 300 Watts, nonocristalinos y un inversor Growatt de 4 Kilowatts. Con cuatro baterías de 48v, 150 Amp, en paralelo con un banco de supercapacitores Maxwell 3000f, 2.7v. En si, es un sistema híbrido. Para dar energía a la casa. En la noche, cuando no exista energía solar, siguen los capacitores dando energía, junto con las baterías de litio. Al cesar la energía, el inversor, le dará acceso a la red pública. Si Dios lo permite y sale bien, se lo haré saber, como una forma de gratitud, por usted compartir sus conocimientos y descubrimientos. Dios lo bendiga y a su familia.

Hay una razón importante por la cual no use baterías en el proyecto. Luego de los huracanes Irma y Maria, no había forma alguna de conseguir baterías. Ya fueran de ácido o litio y enviarlas por correo es imposible. Es por eso que usé supercaps. Estos artículos pueden ser enviado a todo el mundo y con un poco de tiempo y astucia, pueden hacen crear un sistema que atienda las necesidades básicas mientras pase la emergencia.

If you can make simple diy voltage pump from scratch it can afford 95-98% of your capacitors. Than it can work efficiently even without the battery, or even better if add some batteries.

the future is in these super capacities to get out of battery use because I do not have many tools to experiment with these capacitors I started with 10farad 2.7V x 12 regularly to get a voltage of 32v as my sinus inverter works on 24v LF with the EGS002 and 20 MOSFET transistors in the output - converter I made and run 2000W, I have a bank of 18650 batteries 21 per cell x7 cell-29V maximum i want to throw out and transfer to capacitors

I love your project .pleas You can put batteries any .ex 18650 it will charge slow with solar but at night with the capacitor put diode between the batteries an capacitor directly connected to the fridge the batteries will help maintain it's capacity as a solar .tx😉

What IF...you added a battery backup - not for running, but for the CAPS? As in, instead of running the power straight to the caps, run it to a little battery pack and THAT to the caps? I was also wondering what would happen to grid power usage if you ran the 110 (or 220) through a step down converter to a cap bank to an inverter...you'd have a steady 12 volts all the way to the inverter. I just read something about something in all of that actually BENEFITS from some fluctuation in voltage but I don't remember if it was the super capacitors or the inverter...I think it was the capacitors but it wasn't the information I was looking for so I just glossed over it...which I am now regretting...poop. And again, wondering, about 2 cap, series-wired mini packs wired together in parallel. It would still be 6 caps in 5.4V bites in 3 pairs for 16.2V but twice the capacitance...right? Twice the farads? Amps? Couldn't you use smaller caps? ETA: I don't use a charge controller. Although, I am considering repurposing an automotive voltage regulator between my 18V PV and cap pack and moving the step down inverter between the caps and inverter...As in going PV>VR>caps>converter>inverter - instead of PV>converter>caps>inverter. An automotive voltage regulator doesn't cut off at 12V exactly - and I haven't checked, but I doubt the converter does either so...I think whatever benefits from some fluctuation to stir up the electrons - right, it was the caps - I think that might get the job done...I guess I'll find out, eh?

Is not. Supercapacitors are used to pass the solar energy to the desired device. They are acting as a battery.

@@JavierCamacho Sorry I should have been more clear. I was curious about the WH capacity of the capacitors by themselves, not the average daily energy you could get from the solar array.

@@EdricLysharae the caps by it self are not that good. I was able to keep an led light on for 30 minutes. The led was rated for 8 watts.

Nice video, i have had my thoughts about something similar, but with a twist. I have a 40a mppt and a 12v 250a lifepo. My panels are a bit oversized. Id like to switch to 24 or even 48v to get more watt from my panels, but.. the price on batteries is an issue. So, my thoughts.. plugging a cap in the mppt that can handle 60vand plugging a dc dc buck step down 48v->13,8v 80a converter. I got a 44k mfd cap but it think it might be too tiny. It can handle up to 100vdc thou. I dont have the buck and im wonder if it will work or if its a waste of money. Do you have some spare parts to test it in a video? Anyway, thanks, love the vid :). Edit. Was planning to use a 3$ LVD with a dc dc SSR to turn off feeding to the buck if needed if volt got too low on the cap.

Todo va a depender de que quieres mover. Pero un banco de capacitores no sirven oara guardar energia, solo limpia el voltaje. Y vas a necestiar una configuración diferente ya que ese banco ennel video es para cosas pequeñas

Use the power of the sun without batteries in case of emergency. Please watch the video again and listen very closely when I say that "there was no way for us to buy cells or batteries after the hurricane" If you live in an island.... trust me.... you want to have access to supercapacitors...

I don't use the farads at all. I did charged the supercaps bank and the turned up a led light to calculate how much energy I can use. The bulb was on for around 30 minutes. Regarding the links, here they are: Capacitors: amzn.to/41ex3DY bit.ly/3A1mpEG

A capacity system would help on panels on the move...I tried making a solar trailer for my bike but the trees and constant shading, kept screwing with the charge of the batteries... I just wish they made supercapacitors at a higher voltage... So this is a 170 F cap?

It will start the fridge, but you don't say how long it will run. I would say, maybe half an hour. that's not very useful. You would need many more capacitors to make this a practical solution.

if you trying this capacitor with out solar panel in the night it will be shutdown after 10 min because each capacitor he will not giving you more than 40w in the 1 min .... so you will lose too much money and nothing to do because i see some one in youtube he make tested this capacitor

well, I do agree that it is interesting technology and eventually you may be able to develop something very useful - but for $400.00 I can get a 3 Kw gasoline generator. It has a way to go.

you need a MPPT solar charge controller in order to really use the power of those solar panels. The PWM that you has really poor efficiency.

I hope you can help me.i have a 5kva 48v solar installation I'm totally off grid. What I want to know is what capacitor's and how/where do I install them to take up the power surge that occurs when my fridges, borehole and other pump's kick in. You need a pretty decent size Supercapacitor and place it en line between tye inverter and tye battery bank. Remember, if a capacitor is 500f but you have 6 in series, you've to divide the 500 in 6 and that's your real F capacity

Sorry simple guy living on a game farm in Africa 😁 Big capacitor given 👍 in line between batteries and inverter and in series understood thank you. But are you saying I will need 6×500f (what volts) or is that just an example, is there a limit of volts/ amps I need to be aware of and check on the Inverter. At present I have 4 bank's of tubular batteries 48v 100amph each fund's are seriously limited I don't want to damage the inverter or the batteries and town is a long way away. Really appreciate that you responded and appreciate any advice you can give. Hope you have a fantastic day Iain

I am also working on one of these but the problem is to find an inverter that will take in a voltage all way down to zero. A typical 12V inverter will go down to 10v and then not work anymore but in capacitors the voltage is in linear relation to charge. So going from 15V to 10V you only use 33% of the charge, after the point you can't use it anymore.
