BUILD & HUNT - Sinew Backed Wood Recurve Bow

One of the things I love about traditional and primitive bow hunting is the depth of the stories; the level of connection we have with the bow and arrows we make and the animals we hunt. This is the story of a bow, my primitive hunting bow that I've carried all over the country on bow hunting adventures from the mountains of Idaho to the swamps of Florida. I've bow hunted wild hogs, whitetail deer, elk, and all kinds of small game with this little takedown sinew backed osage recurve.
It started out as a couple of billets I got from a friend many years ago. I joined those billets to form a two piece takedown selfbow. After it killed it's first elk, a bull, I used that bull elk's back sinew to back the bow. Later, I'd use that same recurve bow to kill a cow while standing in the exact same footprints as the year before.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

I don’t care who you are, but the fact that you killed a second elk from the same spot as the bull who’s sinew was in your bow back, is about the freaking coolest hunting story out there! I mean seriously, that’s like the pinnacle of being a primitive archer and hunter.

My parents bought a piece of land back in 95 that has a pretty big group of osage that were pushed over back in 65. I had no idea as a kid how valuable that wood is for Bow building. Since I've found these videos and all the great work that Clay does, I'm going to practice on other wood, and eventually start using that osage that is nearly 60 years old, and literally in perfect shape.

really liked the way expressed to everyone that maybe never had the same idea as u the way the journey was to be able to mesh with the whole experience of harvesting the making an complete spiritual GOD given experiences in the process of the whole impact as well as family members I couldn't find anything on that. I appreciate it and thank you for sharing something like that with everyone else. I make bows for my therapy and to hunt with as well try to teach anyone who might be interested especially kids but Makin bows for me is a life saver I am a veteran and I have multiple limitations but ptsd Is the only thing that I have to fight with so Makin bows helps me in that way gives focus on the days when I struggle with life nowadays and u said it perfect

That is the best my friend, just love your videos and want to make a Snakey bow but can’t find any Osage in upstate South Carolina. I remember you you have broken bows in you shop you save, maybe make kit bows out them. I’m a disable vet and should love to hunt with a bow I could make. I have allot of health problems, so it take me for ever to make any thing. I just love leather craft and wood work on anything, I want to teach my two grandsons. Osage is just hard to find and cost to much. Keep up the content. David

At distances over 60 yards I find it easier to use a gap anchor instead of point of aim like it looks you do. If instead of anchoring the arrow at your eye with a three under hold, you anchor at the corner of your jaw with a two under one over hold then put the tip of the arrow at the elevation of the target you should be very close. You may have to hold what looks like an inch or two above the target depending on your bow. I tell you this because this method let's you keep better sight of the target while aiming. If you ever decide to bird hunt with your bow you will rarely get inside 30 yards on birds. They just seem to know you are there. Turkey will get closer, but I'm talking flying birds like pheasant or quail or dove. If you've never tried flying birds you should give a wack at least once. It is more fun than sporting clays. My longest shot was 65 yards on a Bob white quail flying away. It does require a special fletch to help track the arrow in flight, but it is fun.

My bows name is the desert princess. Thus far I have taken a coyote, 3 rough grouse, a collared dove and a squirrel with her. She is a prairie rattler/sage grouse/ rawhide backed rocky mountain juniper. She pulls about 64lbs at 28 inches. I cut her in idaho 2 years ago. She is not a my most powerful bow but easily the best looking and performing.
