This is a re-upload of the video from last week, there were some issues in the previous video I had to fix.
The first installment in manufacturing a carbon fibre wing for use on a race car. This video focuses on the manufacturing of the pattern which I am going to lay the composite material onto to make the wing.
Per my usual procedure:
The build starts at 4:35
The lessons learned start at 16:16
If you are interested in scoring this wing for yourself, or have any projects you want help on hit me up through my website contact page and we shall see what we can do. www.chapmaneng.com
The wing calculator spreadsheet is available through my website at: chapmaneng.com/tools/ If you have any questions or suggestions about it please drop me a line.
RU-vid footage courtesy of Ben Gersekowski, his channel is here and has some good racing content on it (one day he might upload some racecraft theory content, you hear that ben? ideas for you.....): / @bgersey9
The airfoil data came from: www.airfoiltools.com/
X-Foil information is at their website here: web.mit.edu/drela/Public/web/...
Did I say check out my website? I like it, I made it (it needs work) www.chapmaneng.com

Glad you like it. It's actually a re-upload of last week's video due to a few problems in it

Great video! Even though it did not work you showed us what could go wrong, which I thought was really helpful. Anyway, I was thinking perhaps use your CnC to cut the foam directly (with some additional spacing so you can sand it down to a smooth surface afterwards).

Thanks for the comment. I probably could have used the cnc directly, but part of the point I was trying to acheive was not using anything fancy (moulds, vacuum etc). I know the cnc is not a tool that everyone has, however those templates could be easily cut by hand using some 1/4" plywood or the like. Video two should be out this week, and it goes a bunch better.

Finally got around to catching up on this, at least it was still a learning exercise :)

I want to say you didnt miss much... But incremental improvement is a thing that seems to work. I'll hopefully be making something off a metal mandrel shortly, that should be fun! (and I will inevitably mess it up and have to do it again)

Good video mate, I'm currently looking into making a wing for my time attack car. And hopefully I'll get It right

Good luck. The process works. Use hot glue.... And probably cut your spars deeper and then increase the spar cap thickness with some tape after the main spar is re assembled. I think that should allow less filling and sanding. If you're in brissy, hit me up

I am wanting to make a carbon fiber hood and wing for my car. (RX7 FC NA) Do you have any recommendations for good places to get materials and learn at different techniques?

G'day mate, it depends where you are in the world. From the use of the term hood I'm guessing north American, in which case I'd be looking at a company like composite envisions, I used them a bit when I lived stateside and they were good. As for learning techniques, watch easy composites videos and read a few books (I mention a good one and link it in my core press punch build video, I can't get the name right off the top of my head now), then buy some fibreglass (it's cheaper) and start practising.

If you try this again, take a look at the youtube video: "Hot Wire Gravity Feeder" by Allen Moore's channel. It might be just what you need.

Cheers for that!

You’re pulling too hard on your wire the wire should cut without ever touching the foam

Thanks mate. You're 100% correct. If I make another one with this method I'll change my technique. I should also be using thinner templates so there is less chance of catching etx
