The scale modelling world had to wait a long time for a plastic injection molded kit of the iconic Ferret Scout Car, until Airfix finally released their kit of the vehicle at the end of 2023. Of course i bought the kit immediately, since it gave me the chance to work on a subject without having to rely on expensive resin kits: A Ferret of the Rhodesian Army in the 1970s.
I showed and evaluated the kit in detail in a previous kit review video. In addition to the problems i had identified there, namely the rather chunky nature of some parts and the lack of any weldseams on the armor, i encountered a good amount of fit issues as well. The plates of the superstructure in particular had a very poor fit, which was disappointing to see, since this is really a brand new kit. With some filler and sanding paper i could overcome those issues in the end.
By adding the weldseams and improving some details here and there one can enhance the kit a lot, therefore i am pretty happy with the result i achieved here. Of course it would have been far more enjoyable to simply build a perfect model kit, but some extra work and bricolage have their own charm, right?
Furthermore i prepared the figures and a small base, which will help to present the Ferret in an interesting way. I cover that in this video as well and explain to you, what is important.
In the second part of this series i plan to paint and weather the model and complete the scenery, too.
