@theoldwizard998
@theoldwizard998 6 лет назад
themarsvolta215 : Both of your statements are correct. The inital cost of a diesel engine is very high. Emission controls have really diesel fuel economy. Plus you need to buy "diesel engine fuel" (DEF - stored in a separate tank) at an additional cost. Most light/medium duty diesel engines have a much larger oil pan capacity, possibly twice as much as a gasoline engine. All of these make it hard to justify purchasing a diesel engine unless you are going to be putting a lot of miles on the vehicle or carrying/towing large loads.

Coming from the UK I think All of you're British subscribers will agree with me on this, treat the underside of the van with some sort of rust preventer/sealant (the tar oilly paint looking stuff) or the thing will rust out within 5 years, the quality on transits has really bottomed out since they have been produced in turkey and they didn't exactly have a stellar reputation when they where made in the UK Ask any of you're European subs that live anywhere wet and they will agree

ToolReview 100% correct, I have seen Ford trannies with three year's medium duty work and mileage with some pretty awful looking corrosion requiring attention, I know van drivers hammer the vans, but if you intend to keep her better start off with a well-protected chassis now and have a vehicle that's still sound 10 years down the line.

My family just bought our van, and we are so excited to do this. I saw your first video from years ago and I began dreaming, and I have been following you ever since. We are also Oregonians and just so excited to be adventure ready. My wife and I have a one year old, and a three year old, and we have so much life to live and are so grateful. We are headed to roseburg this weekend for our first trial run. Maybe we will see you in that neck of the woods. Thanks for all of your videos, I'm also a wood worker and I'm inspired by your channel.

This is interesting -- the very first Wranglerstar video I ever watched was your first "Make your Own Sportsmobile" video several years ago. I was doing research on RVs and yours came up. I watched it and found your personality engaging and the video well-done. I never made my own Sportsmobile but I've watched a lot of Wranglerstar videos since. Been great watching your channel evolve. I especially think including your family took the channel in a new and richer direction. So glad to see how well you are doing. Now just hoping for a little Wranglerglow . . . ;-)

@waterfowl1653
@waterfowl1653 6 лет назад
Cody, the company that I used to work for has two of these vans, however one is the large dually and one is the same as yours. You might want to reconsider the rear seats, I have noticed that on trips they are not anywhere near comfortable. They are small and cheaply made. I would consider getting either two captains chairs from the front or older captains chairs from a van in the 1995-2005 era. Have a wonderful day and that's for the great videos! Long time subscriber, Steven Berger

Suspension seats are the way to go in these full size vans - I've been driving ~300 miles a weekend for the last few months in Transits, Promasters, Sprinters and NVs. While the suspension is not bad (other than the NV), suspension seats remove any, er, hard spots....

For your dining table, may I suggest an idea that is commonly used on canal boats. On many boats you'll find a pair of sockets in the floor that can accommodate a chrome plated pole approximately 3"(75mm) in diameter. The sockets fit more or less flush with the flooring, so they can be walked over when the table is not in use. The table top has two surface mounted sockets in the underside, and the support poles can be stored separately. This way your table can be slipped away into a smaller space, and you won't have to worry about a table becoming a hazard in the event of a crash. I hope this is of some help. I'd be happy to source images and examples if you'd like further information.
@ogaje4944

Rob Locke great Suggestion
@trongod2000
@trongod2000 6 лет назад
My experience with these tables is that the table stows away as the centerpiece of a bed somewhere. In boats it's often part of the bow V bed. That makes two bench beds into one big bed for two. Another tip on the post. It makes a great place to store those plastic shopping bags we all get at the grocery. Just keep stuffing them in and they come out the other end. At any given time there will be many dozen in there for whatever trash you need to haul out after dinner.

Kyle - I was driving in Baton Rouge heading to the airport to drop off the rental car I was driving and catch my flight home. Traffic was slow and I was probably only going 10 MPH when I passed a work crew that was weed whacking the right of way when suddenly the rear window just shattered. I almost thought I was going to have a heart attack it startled me so much. A rock must have gotten launched at the window to cause that. Thankfully the work crew was nice and the supervisor was able to give me some info to pass on to the rental company so that they could get it fixed without charging me for it. :)

Sounds like a cool project for your family! I used to drive a Sprinter for FedEx up in the Sierra Nevada mountains and you are right that the wind, surprisingly, doesn't affect it much. You will probably want to get 4WD as they are not very good in snow, mud or slippery conditions... I got stuck a number of times. The traction control, at that time, was terrible. All it would do is lose power which would cause a loss in momentum and then you get stuck. I did love driving it in normal conditions, as you mentioned, it is very comfortable to drive and did not feel like a big truck.

Ford have stepped up their game in the mechanical area (engine, trans, etc etc.) however making an HD truck body/bed out of flimsy aluminum is a big mistake. On top of that, imo the newer 2015-2017 ford trucks/vans have very luxurious interiors. I think, overall, for Cody's mission this is a perfect vehicle.

I agree with what you say about the feeling of being able to hit the road in twenty minutes. Nothing like it. We would take trips in my 63 VW camper bus to fish or camp. If I broke down we could set up wherever that was, fix the problem and be on our way. Sure I had to downshift to third gear when going up a hill but when the VW going the other way would flash their lights and you would flash back you knew part of something bigger. I look forward to your conversion videos.

I just scored a 15pass 2003 Chevy Express with 79k miles, new tires, cold front/rear A/C with a bit of roof rust. No worries, the roof was just cut out last weekend. Next job is to raise the roof by 35", add skylight and a custom bed that lives above the cab so there's room for dirtbikes in the back :) muahhh, love this project! Nice van!

I recently purchased an 04 Chevy Express 2500 extended cargo van. It's got a lot of mileage, but I intend to drop a new motor and transmission in. My intention is to make a camper/cargo hauler with a wall mounted folding bed. I may just build an extended roof for it as well. Love your vids as always.

Cody, Whenever people trash on fords, I always remember the story you told years ago about your (Father's Friend? Grandfather? Maybe you can clarify the details) about how when you go to the scrap yard, you get the ford axles, because the Chevy axles were just way worse quality. I drove my eleven year old ford focus as a delivery vehicle for a year an a half and put 13,000 miles (In a 7 mile delivery area) on that little thing, and after getting rear ended AND t-boned, the only thing that actually broke was my driver side blinker. Sure the parking break sticks a bit, but there is just something about fords that feels right in the American hand. Steering Wheel is great, seats are great, and it's cheap. Love Ford.

Nice choice, I picked the Ford Transit 15 passenger, it is the tallest and longest transit available. We wanted all the windows of a passenger van, like your dads van I'm working on my van conversion also, can't wait to see your progress. Safe travels

We bought the 2016 Transit Wagon 350, Its the high roof 15 passenger with Dually rear and the Diesel engine for our church and it is a fantastic van, I'm not a Ford guy and I was involved in replacing an aging church van and this Transit by far was the best option we have taken it all over the southeast for youth trips, my only complaint is the rear AC is a bit lacking for all the open space in there. The ride is incredible I can totally relate with you on that, the diesel engine has plenty of power and driving down the highway you don't realize how big it is because the handling and suspension is so good

This is going to be a really interesting project to see develop. I like the idea that a builder, not an automotive engineer is going to tackle this. A fresh eye and approach to this could bring some really cool ideas! Kudos, Sir...I'll be watching intently!
