If you do get time, please pop down there on Wednesday for an update. That's a very decent price for a comprehensive conversion. There's a lot of work in that, including the panel-beating to clear the wheels from the guards.

Very interesting. I've seen a few Transits in UK that have a 4x4 conversion. It's a wonder that Ford don't include it as a factory option. I did notice that your spare is still the old tyre size. Will that will give you issues if you get a flat out in the wild?

In the UK you can buy a 4x4 one direct from Ford straight out of the factory.

Ive had the Ko2 on my truck for a little over a year now and i really like them accept for one thing. They come unballanced fairly quick, talked with a few diffenent who say the same thing. Just keep that in mind. I need to take mine in and have them reballanced

Never in my life would I have ever considered actually owning a van on purpose. The whole idea of an "adventure van" with all the comforts of home and the capability to take it just about anywhere on Earth has made me completely rethink that. Love this.

I'd love to see it part way through, especially if they're willing to talk about it a bit. During your intro, I was looking at the van in the background thinking "wow, what a transformation" and then you pointed out it was the owners van :)

I have a four wheel drive expedition el. I don't have a van but your conversion video is solid and informative. You didn't mention YOUR final cost. I am interested. Not everyone is interested in a 4-WD conversion for a van but knowledge is good! You never know. Thank you. Great video!

Very cool. Thanks for breaking it down. That was smart, figuring the conversion into the cost of the van. You're right. Around there it's not a luxury. It's a necessity. Yes. Go back with the camera when it's done. It would be cool to see the finished product while it's still up on the rack. That wouldn't be fun for you trying to get the camera and lights under the van when it's back on the ground. 😛

3:54 Um..... on a four wheel drive vehicle if you change the gearing you need to do front and rear axles... if you don't you'll break something because one will try to spin faster then the other.....

You must have missed the part where he specifically said they ordered the front with the new gearing, so they only have to change the rear to match.

He's changing the rear axle ratio because they can order any ratio for the front so both will be 3 75 I believe

I was hoping that van would see a Quigely type conversion, looks like they know what they're doing. Document every OEM part added best you can in case a shadetree guy needs to help you out some day, priceless info on a rig like that.

Super cool! I'd love to see how they get a transfer case and drive shafts under there where they were not intended to be. Putting that torque biasing differential up front (not a locker or l/s) will be perfect for something that will see lots of street time. If you ever need extreme traction you can ride the brake pedal to equal the resistance on both front wheels and both front wheels will then get power.

I didn't realize they used Raptor parts to modify these things, that's awesome. I still think you should go ahead and get a Raptor to go along with it as well haha. Definitely interested in seeing the rest of the process, big fan of watching the guys on Motortrend like Roadkill and Dirt Every Day anyway.

That's cool.. And the truetrac locker is the only way to go in a front end, because it keeps it from binding when your turning, were a full locker binds so one tire is trying to out turn the other while you're turning.. I put the truetrac locker in my 4Runner, and i loved it.. They work great! And those K2 BFG's, are about the best tires for your setup.. They are what Mrs. W. needs on her new 4Runner.. You can prob' fit a 31x9.50 on her 4Runner, and it would be perfect. That's not much bigger then whats on it now, just a little wider, and would help it a lot with traction and stability.. Cody, don’t forget to get same size spare, with the BF Goodrich tire, so 5 tires. They all have to be same size. I’m sure you already did this. (Can’t drive 4 wheel drive with 3 tires same and one smaller) your friend has his mounted on back of his.

The fail-secure hub locks are a nice idea. When Chrysler started that in the '80s, if you popped the vacuum canister or got a leak, the truck would default to 2wd. Steering might be a little squirrelly in 4wd with the posi front. Just like having a locker out back, stay off the gas going through a turn.

Your partially correct about the hubs but default position is unlocked and vacuum locks them in.

I am an ase certified master tech the reason for them to default to 2wd is so if you break down it is towable now you will be able to verify this once you get it back by jacking up the front of the van both wheels off the ground engine off and spin one wheel and the other side will not spin then start the vehicle and ingauge the hubs and both will spin together. Its the way ford has done there vacuum hubs since they invented them. When i get a 4x4 with vac hubs and they wont engauge i test them by appluing vacuum using a vacuum pump to ingauge the hubs. You dont have to take my word for it test it out when you get it back. Anyway i love the videos keep up the great work.

Not sure what hubs you're going with but Jesse is correct. Ford factory auto locking hubs are defaulted to unlocked.

I agree. Ford's vacuum actuated hubs have the ability to be manually actuated as well... If the vacuum seal is broken on the hub assembly (it will be after a few years due to bad O-rings and such) you can still actuate four wheel drive by stepping out of the van and engaging the hub into manual position the "old school way." An electric solenoid will allow intake to pull vacuum on the hubs and lock them when you put it into 4-hi or low.

jesse serfling you re incorrect. My 12 f150 used vacuum to disengage the hubs. The default is engaged. When I was doing diagnostics on the front end I used a vaccum pump to ensure the hubs were locking and unlocking as they should.

Go careful in the snow and ice with a front locker, it makes it impossible to steer because the inside wheel pushes you out because it spins the same speed as the outside wheel

Hey Wranglerstar. Wanted to share my experience with the BFG KO2 tires. Bought them recently, got 10,000 miles out of them, and they were bald. The worked great off road but most of the time I was on road being a daily driver, and was very unpleased with the expensive purchase. I am not trying to tell you you're wrong, just trying to help by saying the tires are soft and give you a recommendation on the tires I am running now. Being the General Grabbers AT2. Please let me know if this helps for future knowledge of trying to post helpful comments

Cody, are you keeping the parts they remove? You could probably sell them for a tidy little sum of cash, or use to fix up an old wreck for an old beater truck or van. My Nan's 1998 Suzuki Jimny has vacuum hubs, the biggest weakness is the nylon vacuum cables dry out and crack.

Benefit of the the manual hubs is the robustness Also, you can choose to use the gear reduction of low range and not lock the front hubs for backing trailers uphill etc etc.

Your f250 should have vacuum operated lockouts if factory, and a vacuum pump on the passenger fender. If you look at lockouts they will have an arrow and two settings lock and auto. On auto they are vacuum operated to engage. When you have a vacuum failure, you turn them to lock so you can still manually engage them.

Looking forward to seeing the build! Good choice on the Trutrac as well, from what I have heard it is an excellent differential. One thing people have mentioned though is that if one of the wheels has absolutely zero traction, (in the air, spinning on ice, etc.) you may need to actually apply very light braking pressure to engage the transfer of power to the other wheel. I am told this is due to the fact it is a helical gear that limits the slip instead of the typical clutch-style mechanism. Not sure if this is still necessary or if it was just on older models, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Maybe you’ve already answered this, but if memory serves your transit is pretty low mileage doesn’t this conversion void the warranty? Why not wait till your warranty is up?
