BUILDING $1,000 Ceiling in CABIN from FREE Trees! | Small Off Grid Cabin

Making some really great progress on the small cabin now with more interior construction finishes. First we mill the boards with our HD36 Norwood portable sawmill out of ash trees which were affected by the emerald ash borer.
After letting the fresh milled wood sit and dry, we move on the the wall coverings including the vapor barrier and drywall. Drywall might seem like an odd covering for an off grid cabin in the woods, but it will do a lot for what we need such as boasting the thermal mass. We didn't want all the walls to be made out of wood because then it would look like a wood box, rather than something appealing to the eye.
We use a chainsaw to cut down the rest of the big cherry tree so that we can turn it into some kind of furniture for the cabin, maybe a table or some cabinets - we'll see! As always we use the tractor which is a great homesteading tool.
Next we install the drywall, while Kevin gives you some tips on how to do it properly.

The ceiling looks awesome. Rip that crappy sheetrock out and panel the entire interior with sawmilled wood just like the ceiling. It's the milled wood that makes this build special. Use some different kinds of exotic wood and varnish it beautiful ❤️. I know you men are capable of better results than plasterboard and mud taping. Come on guys. Build something enjoyable to look at.

Looking good boys! Well done!! Building a cabin is an awesome experience and so rewarding. We use red pine and cedar here in Michigan because of the abundance of it. Having a retreat for the family that’s comfortable isn’t something most folks can do or afford nowadays. Were the luck ones eh?

My grandmother died end of July. I really enjoyed watching your videos with my grandmother on building your cabin. I got to know how she grew up and family history. To me the stories are priceless. Life was brutal back then but my grandmother told me you worked and earned everything and that was the best part. I don't waste much anymore. I'm heartsick grandmother didn't get to see the finished cabin but I'm blessed with the stories. My family has hired a company to build a cabin on our land. You are so right about getting off grid and really spending time with family. Somehow I feel grandmother is smiling down on you guys watching you finish your cabin. Thank you for your videos.she was 98 years young.

Flooring. Tricky situation, but I would go for a laminate, with stone around the wood stove area. Easy to clean, where tiles or clay etc will be harder to clean, especially when you are in and out in winter. I would use the cherry wood for a counter top that would go directly ahead on the long wall, beside the door with cupboards above. You can also put in a sink there with a drain, into the ground. That way you can clean and prep food inside, and in winter use the snow-melt for a water source too. Where you slept on the floor that one night... right there I would put TWO bench seats facing each other, and a table between. The bench seats can have storage inside, with an extra wood lip on the inside - so you can lower the table and turn it into a queen bed... just slide the cushions together and all done. Bedding inside the storage, just like a camper trailer. You are going to want the storage inside the seating anyways. Do not forget a nice cherry wood plaque on the inside of the door, where you can hang coats for winter (deer antler hooks to carry the theme?) ;) Don't forget two 4x4 reflective backings behind the wood stove area to protect the walls. Love the project... and looped the series a few times. Hope that helps. Cheers

Use some of that Roxul insulation in the generator house. It's a pretty decent sound insulator too. And use ethanol-free gas. It will last all winter no problem. The ethanol added to gas is hydrophilic (attracts water), which is where the problems arise.

The best way I have seen to pull logs thru the woods with a smaller tractor is to go to a bone yard and get a hood off a small car, cut a small hole in front middle to run the chain thru. Then when you want to drag a log, slide the hood under the leading end, run the chain from under the hood, wrap around the log as normal. this will allow the log to glide up and over the dirt and obstacles. The log ends stay cleaner this way as well.

Nice video thanks for the update Chris ! Next time that you will pull a big tree behind the tractor, use an old car hood as a sled or slider. Learned that from Wranglerstar with his yellow jeep hood. Get a old in the front and pass the chain through then lift the lid a bit and put the end on the hood, then chain the log and pull ! Easy and no digging in the ground !

Been watching you guys for a while. Recently subbed. Love what you guys do. I grew up in the woods and helped my family as a kid build three cabins (Mom and dads, grandma and grandpas and uncle and aunts) my whole childhood was outdoors with no electricity and no running water. We use to bathe in the little lake at the bottom of the mountain. I tell you all of this not to brag, or think I lived a depleted life, but to say that all the haters can shut their pie-holes. I’m now retired from the army and looking to get back to that simple lifestyle. My mom still lives in the cabin we built 40+ years ago. So all the morons who have no concept of off grid living and how long a cabin can last the test of time because they are armchair quarterbacks should not even be in your radar and get you down. Love that you get the kids out there to have fun but also to learn is amazing in my opinion. Keep doing what you do and flush the negative Nancy’s! They are not worth your time. 😃

Make hand made terracotta floor tiles. You do everything else like a cave man (food, foraging, etc.) Why not? Make the clay tiles and bake them in a mud oven. Then sand the top and bottom so they are all even. Then use sand to mortar them in. That way if anything should spill or leak, the moisture doesn't get stuck inside.

Whispering 'window' at 37:48 was genuinely too adorable for a cabin building channel.

When the salesperson suggested it he should have bought the bigger tractor. You can always use more tractor.

I am really surpised, that You've chosen dry wall. Didn't expect it in cabin. Doesn't look bad, not at all and Kevin has some craft, yes He does.

A tip for the wood, (know it's too late for this time) when you leave it out to dry. To prevent cracks when drying, you can make your own cracks, leads to the water can escape that way instead of making new cracks. It has been used for many years, I dint know about it since last year...
