Even just 1$ a month, comes out to the same as Binge-watching all of my 500+ Videos every month.
My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Howdy, MyPlaceHouse! I am enjoying your video and your English. There is nothing wrong with your English but I smile with the frankness with which you express the "boring" portions of this building a battery out of old laptop cells. Honest! I find your video very informative. Keep up with your videos. They greatly inform newbies like me.

in all the time ive worked with lithium batteries from laptops they have an internal fuse between the pressure release valve and the positive electrode. this is why they are welded directly together without external fuse. if you use unbranded ore cheap ebay batteries its more of a risk

Battery voltage after proper charge that I mean charge to 4.2v rest for about week and measure the voltage under 4v or even 3.8v is bad cell it would pull all the rest of the cells in pack down... Afer a week try to top it to 4.2v again.... And after a week again if is voltage below 4.17 is bad cell you should not use it at all because it would cose nothing but truble..... Try to do some fuses for each cell..... It is nice to doo 18650 "Powerwall" look for HBPOWERWALL or JehuGarcia channel it is some useful ideas... By the way I have also 11kw 48v powerwall in service as I wrote this and it perform admirably...... Good video I would like to see more of this... 👍

soldering directly to cells = say goodbye to 10% capacity and 10-20% of remaining cycles there is a reason batteries use bus bar + spot welding, not to mention spot welding would be 2-5x faster.

soldering not to bad if u not heating up to much 100w soldering iron mels solder super fast so battery not gets hot if u use 40w iron it will do bad stuff cause u heating toooo long but 100w u need 1second 1.5second to do job not 5 or more

Looking decent. I would though probably have made it slightly different to save a bit on soldering time. This by using a thinner cable and snaking it back and forth between the two banks, taking over two cells at a time. And then the wire can also be directly soldered to the cells, so that one doesn't need to solder in extra wires between the cells and the thick wire. Thinner wire in my case would probably still be a bit thick, so that it has lower resistance, so we aren't wasting energy on heating the wire. And also nice to hear that someone knows that batteries are less efficient when pulling large amount of current from them. The same thing also goes for charging too. But I do think this surely wouldn't be a problem in a solar setup though.

Yes, that is a smart idea to have a battery bank if one only is there 2 out of 7 days. And I hope the project goes well.
@johnkubik8559
@johnkubik8559 7 лет назад
If you use it once a week, a 1kW battery is going to save you 52 kW a year. If electricity is very expensive in your country about 15€/year if it's cheap 5€/year. When you add-up the cost of the solar panel and its istalation, wiring, BMS, batteries, DC/AC converter, how long do you thing it's going to take to have a return on investment?
@alexanderwikstrom1829
@alexanderwikstrom1829 7 лет назад
Considering that he has a fair few panels, and he might get 6-8 hours of decent sunlight per day, and maybe an average of around 300-800 watts, then it would charge this battery in around two hours, and he states he has two, so it would fully charge in just a day. So effectively, he wouldn't be using almost any of the power output of his panels. Though, at the same time, he could run his 24/7 servers on the solar system as well, meaning that there will be less excess energy to store in the batteries, so it might get more efficient when taking the full system into account.Then the system would make around 140€ worth of electricity in a year. (according to a "low" figure of 1€ per 10kw/h) And if there still is enough energy to fully charge the batteries in 5 days while running all the 24/7 stuff, and the basement well pump. Then he could always charge his second UPS in his data center to store a bit more energy.
@lnxpro
@lnxpro 7 лет назад
16276 mAh at 48v nominal is about 780 Wh. At full charge is at 58v that's about 940 Wh. With only 14s10p you won't get a whole lot of run time on that UPS. Make it at least 14s40p to make it worthwile. I am building a 14s80p powerwall which will use a UPS in the beginning to charge / run when power gets cut off. Then will add solar later. Very similar to HBPowerwall's stuff and AveRageJoe. Cheers :)

Hi lnxpro Thank You very much! So it's a small 1kwh battery :-) My plan is to make more of them. And now that I have been messing around with this for almost two years,, I needed to make one. Do some thing.. And I am planing to have the Li-ion side by side with a big lead acid battery bank. I just picked up 24 of these p12v2130 ,, they are definitely not meant for this kind of a job.. but free is a awesome price. They are old,, but probably still a 20Kwh pack. I really don't mean to pish you off, Morten, but that looks like an accident waiting to happen to me. Better prepare for the batteries to sit outside in the garage or somewhere else safe when you use them the first couple of weeks. A fire in there would be bad, a fire in the house would cost you way more. Distrust the batteries until they have proven to be secure.

Many modern UPSs this kind have some intelligence added (engineered by design to charge lead-acid batteries), keep an eye on that it can supply the proper (and sustained) voltage/current needed by the BMS. Maybe this intelligence can be bypassed by software to act like a regular power supply.

Wondering how you're going to do checks and replacements of individual cells after everything has been glued and soldered together... Given that the cells are recycled, the risk of more duds (than the ones you got rid of) may not exactly be close to zero, after getting the battery bank into regular use.

Finally I saw the solar panel I wanted you to use to power the data center 😄. But a part of this, are you sure your UPS can use Li-Ion batteries? I haven't seen any of them, usually they use more safe lead sealed batteries (which can grew bigger if not properly charged, but usually are less prone to explosions and fire)...

As always, thanks for the video. On the unrelated note - not to be rude, but why people are so desperate for the video notifications? For example - I have around 50 channels that I'm subscribed to. Every morning before work I have a slow cup of coffee, click on my RU-vid "Subscriptions" tab and watch half of previous days content. I do the same in the evening. Why the hell should anyone want a real-time notifications during work/rest - are some people really so bored and desperate that thay are addicted to content consumption as soon as it's released?

You are matching(paralleling) 1000mah and 2000mah cells in same group..During constant discharge will drain first 1000mah cell than it will completely discharge then your system all drain from 2000mah cells..So will not bee a high drain problem for big capacity cells ?

@sandeep s if you have for an instance cells with 2800mAh and you have 25p system you multiply 25 with 2.5 (2500mAh in Ah) = you get the Ah of the pack which is 62 Ah... For the Wh you will multiply 62Ah with you voltage (13s = 48V) This will give you 2.9 kWh of stored energy Keep in mind arround 80 percent of the 2.9kWh is useable Which equals 2.3 kWh for you to use
@weignerg
@weignerg 4 года назад
Isnt an easier method just to sort them all from highest to lowest and then ensure each of the sets has the same amount of each of the highest value evenly packed until getting down to the last few where those determine the final offset? Seems like he tried to build each set one by one rather than evenly build all sets at the same time...

If you have a 10p (parallel) set of cells, for instance 9x 1600 mah and 1x 1400 mah, that row of 10 should only be used as a 14,000 mah. Your battery is only as good as your worst cell in LiPo. Hope I'm miss understanding your video but it looks like your simply adding together all the battery capacities to make equal rows? Again, if you wanted a 16,000 mah cell, you'd use 8x 2000 mah cells, not 4x 2000 mah and 8x 1000 mah, this would be a fire hazard. Because the 8x 1000mah would fall below voltage while the 4x 2000 mahs are still giving power. Again a fused system would solve this because the low capacity cells would burn the fuses as they're trying to draw power from the 4x 2000mah to keep their voltage the same.
@squidlings
@squidlings 6 лет назад
Good video... not trying to be a downer, just looks like your not balancing the rows correctly from my point of view.
@squidlings
@squidlings 6 лет назад
Watched to the end! This is super Dangerous dude! PLEASE DO MORE RESEARCH on your method, I'm saying this to a) prevent you losing your cells and b) to potentially save you a house fire. You should remove this video to prevent other using the same method. I'm really not trying to be horrible, just not how you balance a lipo cell.
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse 6 лет назад
Hi Squidlings Thank You very much! My banks are 14s10p 14 in series to get up to 48volt 10p meaning that I have 10 cells in each of the 14 steps. Each of the steps has to have the same capacity, be cause the worst "step" will roll :-( so if 13 of the 14 steps is 21,000 mah and the last one is 15,000mah,, the hole thing will be 48v 15,000mah,, instead of maybe 48v 20,500mah if i got it right. Watch more of my videos on this. I get in to it more then ones. Thank you for watching! :-)
@squidlings
@squidlings 6 лет назад
My PlayHouse not stopped thinking about this and working out if this is ok or not... all the vids I've seen say if u want a row as 20ah u need 20x1000mah or 10x2000mah. U mix them up, so once a 1000mah runs out, it's going to pull energy from the 2000mah cells to keep at the consent voltage so maybe this method is ok? I'm doing more research when I have time.... apologies if this is ok.

Think this is how Tesla prototyped their batteries?
@MyPlayHouse
@MyPlayHouse 7 лет назад
Hi Daniel Tekmyster Yes properly,, Tesla did not do any magic,, they just stacked a lot of batteries, and did not go for an ugly car. Thank you for watching! :-)

Morten, not sure you now about the channel of a guy calld HBPowerWall, but he might inspire you. Many tips on there as well, for example a video about fusing a self made battery bank: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f5jmCyQSvi8.html

how on Earth can you figure true MAH of batteries when they are used lol? Ive tested 1800mah batteries that only have true capacities of 1000mah,ect... i mean a used apparatus like this is a crap shoot at best... It will have very little capacity and/or life in real life

Hi TheRusschannel Thank You very much! all of the batteries has been tested... it's not a 100% But close enough. Thank you for watching! :-)

Shouldn't there be an easy computer program to calculate which batteries to combine together into a row? Hell, this might even be doable with a clever formula in a spreadsheet application like LibreOffice Calc (or whatever you Microsoft fanboys like to use for that ;))

Hi Seegal Galguntijak Thank You very much! I got in within 20mAh,,, not necessary to be that precise. Thank you for watching! :-)

Yes, but isn't it always more fun to use a computer to solve a complex or tedious problem, rather than doing it by hand? Oh well, it's already done (at least for the one battery)...
