In 2022, new 7 Star Minimum Energy Efficiency Regulations are due to be introduced for homes throughout Australia. This presentation discusses the results of a recent detailed research investigation examining practical measures to meet the 7-Star NatHERS performance band in the major climate zones in Australia.
Discussion include:
- The comparative performance of traditional brick veneer and lightweight cladding, as well as high performance double stud, cross laminated, reverse brick veneer and Hebel wall systems.
- The efficacy and benefits of greater insulation, in ceiling, floor and wall systems.
- The critical importance of window selection including the range of different glazing and frame options and their use in both living and bedroom spaces.
- The relative thermal bridging implications on the R value of both lightweight steel and timber framed walls is also discussed.
Finally, a summary of the most cost-effective combinations to meet 7-Star is presented.

A great presentation with data backed conclusions! I learnt more in this hour than I have in the past 3 weeks of trying to demystify various facets of framing and window insulation.

Hi Philip, very good explaination. If a house was built using DTS Method (Deemed to Satisfy) and it was later found out that the insulation material used in Ceiling (R4.0) and Wall (R2.5) were found to be faulty material (R value is 35% of its expected rating). The wall insulation is not R2.5 but only R1.75, singles glaze windows, black roof, west facing and other building material that was designed as DTS only (deemed to satisy). Does overlaying the existing R2.8 Ceiling Insulation with correct R4.0 will be enough to make the house to change from DTS to 6 Star?

Very informative! How will the star rating take into account air tightness of the structure? Does the current software factor in air leakage rates of the the structure. I would assume this would make a large difference to energy use. The tighter the home the less energy is waisted conditioning the air again.
