Building a $300k bicycle...

Everyone at some point in their life wanted a bike for Christmas so this time I am using my engineering skills to build a working bike in Poly Bridge 2! I use a chain drive to create a motorbike style vehicle in Poly Bridge 2, this is one my best builds in Poly Bridge 2 so far! Let me know in the comments if there are any ways I could improve the bicycle I built in Poly Bridge 2- I would like to try adding cogs to the gearing in the future, or maybe make the wheels out of custom shapes. What else could I try?
As always, if you enjoy the video please give it a LIKE and subscribe to the Real Civil Engineer channel and enable notifications so you can be the first to know when I post future videos! Thanks!!

That effect most likely comes down to the frame rate you're recording at, which seems to be 30 fps. Since your screen runs at 60Hz at least the recording pretty much skips every other frame. The resulting recording basically is like an optical illusion because a different motion is perceived. That often happens while filming fast moving repeating things like carriage wheels for example.

When you shift perspective in this game, it's kept in an orthographic view, so the wheel is just kept at the same exact height back and front. If you measure the front wheel and the back, it will measure exactly the same no matter what angle you view it. It just looks bigger due to expectations of perspective, lol.

Pretty awesome! If you want the wheels to work with cables you need to create a cross pattern like you see on actual wheels. The angles will transfer the force better and it will prevent it from wobbling like yours did. Usually there will be 2 parallel spokes on either side of the hub, then rotate several degrees, and repeat. Wheels will have anywhere between 18-40 spokes, but you can probably get away with 14 or 16 if you can fit the nodes. A lot of the trouble comes from the flex in the frame. Making the "tubes" thicker should make it more ridgid. Less like toothpicks. Also a chain tensioner could help. 🙂 I love your content though! And appreciate the seat. 😂
@Fete_Fatale
@Fete_Fatale Год назад
Two cables/spokes from each hub node, to either side of the opposite node on the hub, and similarly each hub node having two cables (for a total of 32 spokes) should give a decent cross spoke pattern. The 'steering head' could be bigger too, to reduce the flexing of the front forks.

things further away look bigger because the camera in this game renders in orthographic projection. wich just means that there is no perspective. so normally with perspective things further away look smaller but with orthographic projection its like everything is the same size regardless of how far you are away from it.
@Delibro

Thats right, but that completely not explains why further apart things look bigger, it sais they should look the same. Brain thinking there IS perspective shows it bigger to you, cus it thinks they MUST be when they are the same size even in the more distance.

Immediate improvements I can think of: 1: Spokes/texture on the motor wheels to grip the chain nodes. 2: reinforcement of the "fork" since the truck engine/chain appears to be bouncing off of the ground. You may be moving forward by that impact alone which would negate the entire purpose of the design. Plus the "inchworm" motion may not be sustainable over greater distances and momentum may be the "driving force" in the end. 3: Reduce weight. Make the handlebars and seat out of wood (insert joke) and delete unnecessary bars in the frame. The motor may not need all of those spokes in it. If unbreakable is enabled anyway, a lot of those parts can be swapped out. 4: chain design. You may be able to add a hydraulic "master link" by having an extended hydraulic in the chain which contracts after initialization to add tension. Not sure if this would work but is worth a shot. (This also enables you to rebuild the frame between to reduce weight.)
@ThatJay283
@ThatJay283 3 года назад
22:42 Things look bigger that are further away because Poly Bridge uses an orthographic camera projection. Most games use a perspective projection. Orthographic projection means objects don't change size as they move further away, and our brains interperate that as objects getting bigger. If you measure the size on the screen of both the wheels they will be the same size.

It looks to me that at 2:10 ish, you have some sort of mismatch going on with your game's frame rate and the video's frame rate. Based on the "stats for nerds" section of the youtube player, you're recording / uploading at 30 fps. Maybe try upping that to 60 fps in your capture software? If that isn't an option, you may also want to try capping the in game frame rate at 30 fps.

The reason the far wheel looks bigger is because you _expect_ the farther one to be smaller. They're actually the same number of pixels tall on the screen. This is the result of _orthographic rendering_ which ignores distances and makes everything appear in the same place no matter how close or far away it is from the camera.

22:55 Poly bridge seems to use what are called "parallel projections", it just means that parallel lines are preserved (notice how the rear forks at that timestamp are exactly parallel). When you watch the replay in default position with the camera facing the bridge you are looking at an "orthographic parallel projection". It's the exact same as a parallel projection except your line of sight (the projection) is perpendicular to the plane of view (in this case the bridge). When you move the camera as you did in the timestamp you are looking at an "oblique projection". Again this is a parallel projection that is not orthographic (easier to define it by what it's not). Normally with the perspective projections we are used to (our eyesight) lines converge at some point in the distance. This means that lines going away from us will never appear parallel even if they actually are. This is what gives us our depth perception and informs our brains about how large items are. Here is the cool part, the answer to your amazing question! THEY AREN'T!! The wheels are actually the exact same size... I'm not shitting you, I measured and you should too! It's your brain looking at the other geometric data it has at it's disposal and deciding "That rear wheel seems further away but also appears to be the same size therefore, it should be a larger object to compensate". We are viewing an alien dimension where vision doesn't quite work the same and our human brains just can't fully process it.

Support the front wheel to stop it from moving away from the motor and it'll work. Because what's currently happening is that it starts moving then the front wheel moves to far forward due to the weight of the structure above it. The motor then touches the ground and acts as front wheel drive and plays catch up with the front wheel. The cycle than starts moving and the process repeats

I think you might be able to get more tension on the chain if instead of cables for the chair you could use expanded springs

I guess Polybridge is using Orthographic projection, which is why far-away stuff doesn't get smaller and looks weird? It's so that you can line up things in 3d properly, even when they are at different distances.

Despite the fact that this bicycle includes in its components, a monster truck, and literal tons of steel, it is nowhere close to being the most expensive bike ever made

I am quite soothed by your humming after a day of children screaming in my face. (not an engineer) Thank you! Also.. First comment? You're welcome! (note: this may not be my first comment. terms and conditions may apply) edit: I literally un-paused to finish the video and you apologized for your humming. It's great! Own it!

Add a spring loaded pull tentioner like u had in the example at the beggining, it is found in higher end bike but it's is a very simple part that fits your needs.

I’ve never played the game but yes! I think adding some sort of teeth/treads sort of things to the custom shapes might do well for getting some more traction 🤔 Can’t wait for the next video you do of this sort of thing! I always love the builds with the node ropes especially 🤗 Keep up the good work RCE!

This was really fun to watch! I wonder if you would have better power transmission between the gears if you added teeth to them to grab the chain. It looked like the chain was slipping on the rear gear the whole time

a few things that might make it work better. Remember the bike has mass, the more steel and things you use to make the frame make it harder to move. If you increase the mass of the monster truck to the max, that might offset it somewhat. Secondly is chain tention, would a small wheel on springs pushing down on the chain take up the tention so you get better grip? Finally the rear axle was too smoothe, make it chunky, may even work as a triangle, as you want the points to grip in the gaps of the chain, this will give the rear wheel way more grip. It might pay to make the gaps in the chain a little bigger just to allow the rear axle to grip better. Those three things should give you far better "pedal to rear wheel" power ratio's. I guess you could also take off the seat and handlebars and minimise weight until you have the bike moving, then add them later, once things are moving again.
