Building a 750HP EJ25 Shortblock; My First Engine Build.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS MY FIRST ENGINE BUILD, I AM STILL LEARNING JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. But with that being said I am so happy with the outcome of this engine. As long as you have the right tools, the will to learn, and some patience I promise that anyone can do this. Take your time and verify all measurements, the worst part is going to be verifying tolerances but once you are past that it is smooth sailing.
Totally open to questions that you guys might have ill try my best to answer them.
Once again huge shout out to Outfront motorsports for answering the questions that I had.

FINALLY finished the video, man that was a long one.😅😅 Putting sealant on is always a rush job, they have a set work time that if you go over, you scrape it off and start again. And usually with temperature changes it greatly varies the cure time. The seam sealers we use in collision repair are rated at 70°. Every 10° up it cuts the time in half. Every 10° down it doubles the time. But anyway, that engine looks great!!! And always double, triple, quadruple check measurements.

Fantastic video man! One note, when you torque your rods it’s worth finagling them into a vice, the way you did twisted the rod against the crank with 90ft lb of toque, and the only thing that stopped the rod from twisting was the rod bearing. Obviously those bearings aren’t designed to take a twisting load like that, just a normal force. Since there’s so much bearing surface area, the deformation caused by twisting those rods like that likely had little effect but just a note from a fellow garage ej builder! Keep up the great content!!

If you haven't already hurry up and put that short block in a trash bag or wrap it in plastic palette wrap till you're ready to slap the heads on. Hey, I'm going to be getting a new 2021 WRX STI in a couple weeks (in transit 😩) and I've got some questions about some certain mods since I know you are incredibly knowledgeable about these cars and there are so many mixed opinions online but I would trust yours. I don't want to void the warranties so no tunes ,although I'm planning on it probably 2-4 years later I think, but I've decided to get a tomei cat back (don't hate lmao) and I also want to get some good turbo sounds. I know if I also get an entire, proper air intake in combination with the catback I might run into lean running issues. But if I were to just get a drop in aftermarket filter would that give sound if any at all without causing a lean condition? And if so which filter would you recommend like k&n etc? An actual intake will require a tune as far as I'm aware? I've also decided to go ahead and get the gfb hybrid bov. I know if not set to 100% recirculating it'll cause it to run rich but I don't mind because pops and bangs and such. I know that the bov could possibly cause me to be denied certain warranty claims but considering the install is about 20 minutes I really don't mind just taking it off. I'll ask my dealer first before to make sure they wouldn't deny a claim due to this first. Anyway I was wondering if you knew if this combination of parts would cause any issues (other than a little rich during bov purge) and how I can get the most noise from my turbski without needing tunes, voiding warranties, causing any unnecessary damage, or if you knew of better ways to do this. Any help would be super appreciated and love the vids btw 😉.
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 года назад
1st, congrats on the car! Nothing wrong with tomei, I personally just don't like how they look. You should be fine swapping air filters without tuning, these cars can be temperamental but shouldent run into too many issues. Don't get the GFB, they always have leaks. I'd suggest a Cobb BPV

In a perfect world we would clearance everything at operating temp, and torque all the bolts at a operating temp. And since this isn’t practical. Subaru uses a controlled temp, 77*f is what they build their motors at. Then rely on the expansion of metals formula for their cold specs. That’s why factory stuff is so tight. I set my mains .0015 and rods .002. Those are built motor specs from nasioc haha

Besides.the stretch guage spec from ARP, what does Manley recommend for torque as 80-90#'s is a ton of torque there by reducing your bearing clearance and did u put assembly lube on the rod bearing as they looked a little tight when you went to spin the rod.. Maybe take a look at Sunie Performance on you tube. He's a German subie builder in Germany..Try to find an early video as he shows the stretch gauge and also the rod movement after torquing. His move much smoother.. Not saying it's wrong, but it looks too tight. I have a one off set of Cunningham Titanium Connecting Rods for a phase 1 2.5 with Cunningham 286,000 psi 3/8 bolts and there spect at 50 ft #'s that's why I question 80-90 ft pds.. Or ask Jeromy or John from Outfront on the torque..

If you put the head studs in and install torque plates,1 per side to simulate the heads u will get a better torque reading. Just torque the studs like you would the heads, maybe if you're ocd put a little ARP Ultra-torque a light coating the nut the washer and torque plates so there is less friction torquing.. Also many in the know have said to build between 68 - 72* less expansion so .albeit a little homemade temp controlled room if it matters to u. I just try to not overlook anything if I'm looking for doing it right..And Don't use red rags as they leave tiny lint behind. Paper coffee filters with a little after for cyl wipe down followed by dry filters, leaves no lint behind.. Keep up the great work, you'll get more satisfaction out of building yourself than paying someone to do it for you along as you're armed with the right info and sounds like you are with Jeremy's help..
@Smeedia

Will have to try the coffee filters, snagged some blue lint free towels for final cleaning. Don't want any fibers left behind 👌

Awesome thanks again for these videos! After alot of reading the 1.5 - 2 thou is perfect for mains and I think rods I'll be doing around 1.8. What are your thoughts on plasti guages instead of the mic?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 года назад
Tbh I did not even know what pladtigauged were before someone else commented. After reading into them a bit it seems like people use them as a substitute for bore gauges and mics, or use them as a final check. I think if your still learning or don't feel confident in how to use the precesion measuring tools then they're a great thing! But I don't think that they're 100% needed. Then again this is my first build so take what I say with a grain of salt 😅 I'm confident with my measurements

Question, as someone that has little to very little car experience. What is the point of a short block vs a normal block? Also what’s is like working on a Subaru?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 года назад
Short block is an engine without the heads, longblock is a shortblock with the heads bolted on 🙏 its not too bad, once you start getting into it a bit, you'll learn the layout quickly

Tanner NICE JOB MAN! You have come so far since I first found your channel. Ive done the axle boot s on my bugeye but no short blocks yet. Im planning on doing a jdm sti 6 speed swap. But trying to retain wrx axles so I can retain wrx hubs because I just put new suspension and rotors in. Worm hole. I did install the jdm 207 v7 w/avcs via iWire kit.

Ohhhhh sounds like a fun project you've got planned! How was thr iwire install?!
@Christosan88
@Christosan88 3 года назад
@@Smeedia fairly straight forward. just cut a hole in the firewall grommet. removed pin plugs from the chassis harness plugged in iwire leads to both chassis harness and jdm ecu. It was plug and play. Between NASIOC, your channel, Flatironstuning, and Iwire I have the knowlege just need to make the right choices. Cant wait to see the flat 6!
