We had a John Deere Pallet Fork that we use and thought wouldn't it be nice to have a bale spear attachment for it. Since the pallet forks come off the John Deere pallet fork we thought we would add a removable bale spear to it.
Thanks for the idea. I had checked with a local implement dealer and priced a complete spear with the skid steer mount. They wanted $980. Unbelievable and totally not worth that given I will only use this two or three times a year. I bought the spear off Amazon and just got it mounted yesterday. I had a local professional welder do mine. He did a great job and I have a total of about $275 invested in the spear and welder service. I am going to give it a trial run today. Looks like it is going to work great.
I welded the bushing for the spear into the bottom beam of the pallet fork. I welded two 6x6 steel tube that is 1/4" thick to the ends for the two main spears. Reinforced under the spear bushing with 1/4" 1x1 tubing. Works well. The bale spear we have is a JD as well.
Having all three loader attachment types( Skid Steer, Global, and JD lower TWIN Pin.... we have nunerous pallet forks and spears just sitting around, usually the most used are the 4 spear Marcrest "Tusk Design" Home fabricated for handling 21- Bale Baron bundles, and the standard JD pallet forks..... Your Modification saves you money, but changing the attachment saves us time.../. WE use the Forks to put bundles in the 53ft trailer and the "Tusk" to take them out...... and to place complete bundles on customers conveyance.... where attachment contact may be avoided.......
l got a pair of forks that had the heels worn it off the bottom of the fork . cut hole in uprite welded in sleeve kept it forward and centered in uprite. put in spear. I use two spears to have better control of bale .put on or off by siding on or off. we built a set for a neighbor like yours. still using 17 years later you have a good plan
