Just bought myself a copy of mastering small stakes no limit, and finally able to make sense of range vs range. I'm the definition of a recreational player, and decided to start playing .05 / .10 cent while my country is in lockdown. I'm writing music for my album and handling my day job till dinner time, and then play online poker for a few hours, and then study poker till I fall asleep. I've managed to turn a 14 dollar deposit into a little over 500 bucks in the last 6 weeks. Your book, and all your webinars by your team have bumped up my edge in these games by a huge margin. I'm considering moving up in stakes, but devoting more time to study just isn't feasible. Either way. Thank you for your help. If i had any intention of pursuing this full time, i'd sign up for poker coaching right away. You can't really put a monetary value on the stuff you guys are teaching.

Minimum wage is only $15 per hour in one state, and it is a lot less in quite a few others.

More fabulous content. Ty. Jonathan tells it how it is not how people would like it to be. Being good at anything requires practice, study, repetition, patience and perseverance. The existence of famous rich poker 'stars' deludes many into thinking that poker is a way to get rich quick . It isn't.

Whenever I make the jump from 5-10NL to 10-25NL, the cards seem like they are stacked against me. If only there were a book for how to beat a deck stacked against you. It may seem coincidental, but there have been a number of times I have built up my roll enough to where I could easily afford to lose a max table buy in on a 10-25NL game. I play the same style regardless of the stakes. I play for stakes well within my means so I can afford to play with the fearlessness required to win. But it seems like every single time I make the jump from 5-10 to 10-25, I’m set up against a cooler every single time, and the only time I can win a pot is by timing bluffs well. It’s freaky how it works. You would swear the cards are rigged online or something if you were to see the night and day difference between the way I run for small-mid stakes compared to mid-higher stakes. I seem to run like a god for smaller stakes. The other 5-10 regs I see on there are very cautious about playing pots against me. Many will leave as soon as I sit down. But it just feels like I’m spinning my wheels building my roll up at smaller stakes just to get coolered every hand when I make the jump to higher stakes, and then I have to start over again.....

You should always look to get favorable rakeback. Always email the site you're playing on and look to get good rakeback deals. Each site is different, but it is essentially free incentive to play on the site.

hey Jonathan love your work. In regards to a lot of advice you give in this video im prompted to ask your opinion of my theory : “ If youre not playing poker to make money? ..I reckon youre just handing over your money to players that are? Of course this theory only applies to players that are very skilled at the play of poker. If you could please comment..i very much appreciate you and i am grateful for your videos. Mr Little you were very dismissive of those who don't have access to a big bankroll/a well paid job. Not everybody is privileged enough to have a lot of disposable income. I would say it is better to start small and build up slowly than to have a big initial bankroll and to do what many people do where they start playing at a higher level than they probably should. Only two days ago I watched an interview with a UK player who became a millionaire (and yes I know this is very unusual) off of the back of an initial £10 deposit. As the saying goes "the mightiest oak trees often come from the tiniest acorns".

You have mentioned the use of some apps to calculate your ev bb/100 hands, what kind of apps do you use when playing online? cash game and/or tournaments?

PokerTracker4 or HoldemManager are good options. I use HoldemManager3. I play both tournaments and cash games.

Hey Jonathan, I’m hoping I can give you my current situation and see what you would do in my shoes. Over my last 5 sessions, roughly 26 hours, I’m averaging $90 an hour at 1/2. In these past 5 sessions (which were on weekends) I put in massive amounts of studying during the week in between. This includes watching your videos, watching live poker, and playing micro online. I’ve played casino poker in the past in another 6 sessions, roughly 19 hours, and averaged $29 an hour at these. I also have roughly 400 hours of home games played in college for micro stakes in which I made 10 bigs an hour, usually playing while drunk and also while I was not nearly as good as I am now, because I just watched pro poker and didn’t do much serious studying. But since I’ve started playing 2 years ago I’ve studied at least double the amount of hours played. I currently have $2900 set aside for $300 buy in 1/2 games at the local casino, and make $80k a year with my full time job. Given my above average skill for a rec player, and the win rate I have so far (which I expect to go down a bunch, maybe to $35 an hour, since I have a very small sample size of casino poker), At what point should I be comfortable with the money I have to the side, and can start taking money out, if needed, for spending money? When should I be comfortable moving up to 2/5, given that I have another source of income other than poker?

i disagree about the comment that money isn't a good motivator, who cares if its money that motivates you or love of the game or maybe you are a competitive person and like to win, as long as you have something that can push and motivate you everyday to improve your game than that's a good motivator in my eyes

If you have a full time job that allows you to have $500 a month for poker - you don't need to go pro! There is nothing wrong with working full time and playing some poker on the weekend and you can also be profitable. You need a budget, not a bankroll. If you have $500 a month, cool. Wait a month, get that $500 and go play $1/$2 - if you bust out to zero, cool - wait another month and try again. However if you win a few hundred, add that to your 500 and go back next week or whenever.

The subject of the video/stream is "Building a Bankroll as a Recreational Player" and yet Jonathan constantly says that it's not about making money. These two things don't make sense. You have to make money to build a bankroll.

JL always says the opposite EXCEPT when addressing unskilled players. Unskilled players need to focus on getting better, not making money.

I apologize if the message was convoluted. I was trying to get the point across that in order to build a bankroll as a recreational player, you cannot only care about short term money. Many recreational players want to get rich quick and move up stakes. This leads to 'building' a bankroll quicker... but going broke way more often. It is important to find value in truly beating the game, if you want to build a healthy bankroll.
