Hey, Jonathan. As a lifelong winner at small stakes hold'em (both live and online) who has recently decided to take poker seriously again, I just wanted to let you know that this video has re-ignited my poker inspiration. I have spent the last 5 months operating on a study to play ratio of about 70% study, 30% play (which is never recommended, I admit), but have just felt sort of "stuck" lately, even though I am crushing my current stakes. I don't know what it was specifically that you said, but I feel renewed and energized after watching this video, and so I thank you. Also, seeing some of the questions that you were being asked has made me realize that poker is alive and well, though I do sincerely sympathize with you =) Thanks, Jonathan!

I'd also suggest one move up in stakes as soon as the bankroll permits. Rake is killing your winrate at low stakes. I'm trying to get my wife to move up to 2/5, and as part of a little experiment I played a month (90 hrs) of 1/3 with a $5 + $2 rake at $50. Cashed 12/15 for $27 an hour, about 28bbbs per 100. For a 5 hour session, the actual rake paid for pots I dragged was $137. That was an average session where I made $130 over the 5 hours. Even if you half your winrate, you make more actual $ at 2/5, since most every pot is max rake and you simply have more money in play, typically $500 stacks rather than $200 stacks

Most card games are about minimizing variance. Magic you do this drawing more cards, and having ways of maximizing the odds of getting what you need by tailoring your deck. In poker, everyone has the same deck with the same amount of cards. You cant control the deck, and how many cards get drawn. But you can focus on calculating the odds and minimizing risk based on whats available. I guess tldr doesnt suprise me too much, similar mindsets just applied differently i think

In my experience online tournaments can be an easier way to build a bankroll than online cash games. You just need to focus on smaller field tournaments like 100-200 players, which you find more often at the smaller poker sites. It is really only on PokerStars, that so many tournaments see these huge 3.000+ player fields, where it becomes more of a lottery ticket.

fundiver198 true. I play plo on ignition and just started a bankroll challenge from $40 last Sunday. I’m at $350 right now but the tourneys really help. I always search for late regs with under 50-100 people.

Hey Jonathan! I'm not bankrolled well, so I'm mostly competing at $0.02/0.05 cash games and $1 SNGs. I'm doing horrible at cash games, but I cash most SNGs (1st or 2nd). I've pretty much assumed from this that I have some serious problems with my poker fundamentals. I rarely hit the rake at my cash games (there has to be a dollar or more or something like that in the pot to hit the rake right now), so I don't think that's an issue. I've started reading your content on low stakes cash games, doing quizzes, GTO trainers, etc. Two major issues that I think are present: (1) I don't actually play that well deep-stacked. I cash most SNGs by staying between 25-50bb. I've entered a few tourneys with 200+ players, and I cashed each time that I hovered around 50bb. However, each time that I reached 100bb, I basically pulled an Icarus. (2) My mental game seems to be thrown off by playing cash games. It's much harder to focus on the action over the $ amount in cash games, even at microstakes. Do you have any advice?
@boltaurelius376

Some sites let you display you stack in terms of BB, which always use so that when moving stakes, the game plays the same.

Jonathan, in your opinion would it be easier to grind up a roll on 1-2 anonymous cash tables where you wouldnt have any information on your opponents making them less exploitable? Or do you think GTO would be be the best strategy on these tables anyway?

Hi Jonathan I’m from Switzerland, so I’m sorry if my English isn’t that good. First of all I want to thank you for all the great content you provide us - I appreciate that very much. I have some questions about this video. As I understood you suggest the following Bankroll management: Start at a level with at least 25 Buy-ins , 30 would be optimal. Then try to reach 40 Buy-ins at this level. Then move up to the next higher level and give it a shot with 200BBs of the higher level (e.g. 2$ / 5$ - 1000$). When things go well, stay at this level and try again to reach 40 buy-ins. But if you lose the 1000$ shot, you should maybe go back to 1$ / 2$ and try again to reach the 40 buy-ins or stay longer at this limit. And if you ever should fall back to 25 buy-ins at the next lower limit you have to move down. (e.g. If you play 0.5$ / 1$ and you only have 1250$ left than iu have to move down to 0.25$ / 0.5$) At minute 12:04 you say if you play 2$ / 5$ and you get down to 2500$ then you should move down to 1$ / 2$. But 2500$ at 1$ / 2$ would be only 12.5 Buy-ins. Would it not be correct if you get down to 5000$ then you have to move back to 1$ / 2$ for still having 25 buy-ins? And also at minute 15:18 you say if you ever go down to 3000$ at a 2$ / 5$ game then you have to move down to 1$ / 2$. But then you would only have 15 buy-ins left. Should it not be more something like 25 or 30 buy-ins you should still have at the lower limit? And then the last thing, at minute 14:35 you say if you go at 1$ / 2$ up from 3000$ to 8000$ then you have won 2500$ at this stake. Is it not a 5000$ win at this limit? I just want to know if I understand something wrong. I really want to build up a good bankroll :) (as soon online poker is allowed again in Switzerland…) Thank you in advance!
@PokerCoaching
@PokerCoaching 3 года назад
The numbers I laid out assume you want to be generally risky with your bankroll and want to do everything you can within reason to move up while also having a place to fall back to. I obviously suggest much more conservative bankroll management if you really do not want to go broke. See JLPoker.com/bankroll

What would you estimate a good enough online winrate (in BB/100) at a given level is for a player to consider moving up? Would this be a better metric than just winning x buyins? If so, what would be a good sample size of hands before you consider the winrate number reliable? Great advice on keeping your bankroll segregated.

Regarding underground games in NYC, there is a 1-3 game with 100 to 1000 buy-in in Manhattan, but the rake is 9% uncapped and there's a $10 rock. That doesn't seem like a very profitable game to me. If you live in NY, I would advise a casino in NY or a neighboring state for live cash games.

Ive been playing for 3 years and I consider myself not a fish anymore. Ive been studying the last year. I have a bankroll of about 200$ online. I find it really really hard playing very small stakes. For example players at 0,05/0,1$ online are so RANDOM that I can't figure out any strategy for efficient winning. I feel way more confident against players on 0,15/0,25 or 0,25/0,5 , and as a matter of fact I win more at those stakes. The problem is I cant play those stakes cause my BR is short, I have like 5 buy-ins. I am stuck, any thoughts?

Great video, thanks. Liked, subbed and shared. A query about acceptable downswings, or downswings that are within reasonable levels of variance. I just moved up in stake, and have gone on a bit of a downswing, am more or less about 10 buy-ins down. My bank roll is sufficient so that this has not caused overdue concern, but I wonder at what point this downswing is actually me just having a losing strategy? I have been back and assessed my play, and am happy with the decisions I've been making and can attribute back luck to a lot of the downswing, but still, it makes me wonder. I also wonder how many hands one can expect to be on a downswing for reasonably? This bad run has been going on for about 2,000 hands - is that reasonable and to be expected? It's definitely one of the worst runs I've had. This is playing 6 max NL Holdem.

The opposite is true. In tournaments, there are antes, increasing blinds, an no rake on individual hands, which favor the loose, aggressive players. Cash games are the opposite, favoring tighter players. You can see this by studying the GTO charts for both games at PokerCoaching.com.

I do not play live in Vegas anymore, unless I'm there for a tournament series. I was just trying to make a point that when a large game starts at a casino that doesn't usually have large games running, that it will be softer than the main casinos. I have many students who play live cash and vegas, and one of them found a 10/25 game at the mirage a couple of months ago. He said it played like your average 2/5 game, so that was great! I'd be happy to have you as a student at pokercoaching.com. We currently have a sale for Valentine's day: pokercoaching.com/valentinesale. I recommend beginning with my Cash Game MasterClass. Good guide! thank you. But there's something I don't understand. For example, I started grinding at 5NL with $150. After making it $200, the shot-taking was also successful. I made it $400 at 10NL. And made $600 at 25NL. But the downswings came and the bankroll began to shrink. So now, the bankroll is $350, should I just blind down to 10NL? Is it right?
@theejayzeeable
@theejayzeeable 3 года назад
Yes, move back down to 10NL and build your bankroll up again before moving back up to 25NL. This way you never lose your bankroll.

With a Bank roll of 3k as stated for 1/2... how many times should you consider buying in per day before getting up and leaving.... meaning, "I dont necessarily want to spend 3k in one day." Hope this makes sense?
@PokerCoaching
@PokerCoaching 4 года назад
You have the wrong mindset. You are not "spending". You are investing. That said, you should basically never go through more than $800 or so in a day in soft small stakes games.

If I have 25 buy-ins and say am playing .2/.5 NL - Am I able to multi table and play the same stakes given it's cash? I just find it hard to only play one micro cash table at a time but want to know if up to 4 is ok or not.
@PokerCoaching
@PokerCoaching 4 года назад
Yes, multi-tabling doesn't have an effect on your bankroll other than the fact that your bb/100 might go down as a result.

Cash games players who win big - what do you do with the $$? Do you just bank it and pay the $25% tax? If so, does anyone even WANT to play if you have rake, travel and tax to pay ? I find this the biggest disincentive to even play these days

I can't beat my local 1/3 game. It has a 10 percent rake capped at 15 dollars. I used to be a winning player many years ago but can't seem to win now. I am currently down 800 big blinds in this game over 26 sessions. Is this a downswing or is the rake killing me or am I just bad?

Can you make everyone a good/winning player by taking your course? I took red chip poker course, learn the math and strategy and got my ass handed to me lol. I wonder if I just started on a bad streak or if it's just me or maybe the course. I really don't know. I do want to learn winning poker and hope to be a pro one day

I can teach almost anyone to win. All they have to do is find a game they can beat, play it a ton, and keep a proper bankroll. Most people do not want to do those three things though.

Great video Jonathan! I would love some advice. I'm 4 tabling NL25, winning at 10bb/100 (100k hands played so far over the course of nearly a year). I want to keep the smallest amount possible on the site, but depositing was a huge ordeal, and I don't want to do it again. What's the smallest amount I can keep on the site without risking going bust/ having to move down? I currently have $1000+ (40 buy ins) at all times, but would like to reduce that amount. Any input is hugely appreciated.
@RolandoAvilaallin
@RolandoAvilaallin 4 года назад
You've got a good win rate over a decent sample size. Ask yourself what are your goals regarding poker and bankroll management? If your fear is moving down or going bust then the answer is to not reduce your bankroll and keep playing like you are at those limits. With your win rate I would go for a shot take at 50nl. Even with a 5bb/100 at 50nl will be the same profit your rakeback earned during the year with 100,000 hands will be doubled compared to playing at 25nl. With that said given each limit you go up I like an allowance of buy-ins as the you experience more variance and the competition gets tougher.
@princea5886
@princea5886 4 года назад
@@RolandoAvilaallin Thanks for the response! I've taken a handful of shots at 50NL. I'm winning 3.1bb/100 there over 30K hands. At this point in my life, I prefer to sit down for a few hours after work and print money against fish without getting put in tough spots almost ever. That's what I've found at NL25. NL50 has way more TAGs that 3bet/ 4bet and just generally make life difficult. It's not worth the stress for me personally.
@PokerCoaching
@PokerCoaching 4 года назад
@@princea5886 I suggest you move up as well. As for your question, I would keep something like 12 buy-ins on there, realizing that you will have to deal with the hassle of reloading every once in a while.

You must be crushing. That's really impressive. Not many people can beat 25NL for 10bb/100 over a big enough sample!
@avsinsandyman7988
@avsinsandyman7988 Год назад
You're not going to beat .25-.50 online unless you have some fundamentals down such as pre-flop ranges, pot odds, EV and some general hand reading abilities. Most likely newer players should start at .05-.10 or lower until you learn the fundamentals and beat your game over a 50k+ hand sample.

Great content, I love your stuff, but I think you are dead wrong about the rake. Even Doug Polk against the weakest opponents in the world could not do better than break even in an uncapped 10% rake game.
@PokerCoaching
@PokerCoaching 4 года назад
You would just need to adjust your strategy, play extremely tight and aggressive and I'm certain a great player could beat that game against really terrible opponents. With that said, rake clearly makes it tougher to win, and you should look to play in games with a reasonable rake.
