My dad helped me rebuild the ball mill so that is far better and can actually crush ore by the bucket load. Help me make videos by donating here: / codyslab Follow me on Facebook: / codydonreeder SubReddit: / codyslab
I don't think he's blaming others. Dads make a huge difference, that's just a fact. Sure, you got to bear it if your dad sucks. You got no other choice. But, remember that dads or future dads might be reading this, and they have responsibilities too. Being a good dad is a much bigger responsibility than being a good son, until that son grows up and has to take responsibility for himself.
my dad says wi-fi is bad for your health. Meanwhile, he's surronded by light 100 000 times stronger and doesn't die instantly. Strange... and idk what light could do if it's not ionizing.
@Dan Bourget You're making logical fallacies and assumptions on a severely lacking premise. It was never stated anywhere that the poster "got nowhere in life". That is a condescending conclusion made up by you. The poster said that his dad made his life miserable until he was big enough to stand up to him, which something else entirely, and you know it.
When Cody and his Dad work together you really get to see how Cody’s love of recycling old machinery into built from the ground up equipment to sate his minds need for scientific enquiry comes from. Ranchers and farmers are never given enough credit for their intelligence and resourcefulness. Cody and Dad are a dream team 👍
I wouldn't say this is an education channel, more an experiment channel. But yes, he has been growing fast. I subbed to him when he had about 25k subs, and he never really changed, that's what I like about him.
I like RU-vid, TBH. Can you imagine what either Cody or NileRed's shows would be like on American cable? "CODY NEEDS TO BUILD A NEW BALL MILL" "My dad's helping me rebuild the ball mill..." ... "AND NOW HE NEEDS TO DECIDE WHETHER TO MOUNT THE MOTOR ABOVE..." "We could mount it up here, or-" *rusty door sound effect* "OR BELOW" "I like it down here because it'd be more compact..."
this is a cody channel, not a science channel... cody is randomly doing things, science is just so happen to be one of them. he also does farming and stuffs
I hope you cherish the time spent with your father as much as I did... My father passed away 3 months ago, and this reminded me of us building an air compressor out of a chrysler air conditioning compressor and lots of scrap parts :-) Well done Cody and father :-)
Mr67Steve Even cooler that him and his dad disagree on such a large topic, yet they still love each other. I respect his parents a hell of a lot for that.
I remember working with my dad like this - Like your dad, he could take junk that was laying around and turn it into cool new stuff. I learnt to do the same - gotta think laterally. Cheers Dad. I miss ya xx
Nature took millions of years to put all of that together to make the rocks and Cody takes three hours to pull it all back apart. Loved the video, fun watching you work with your dad
I tried making thermite only out of rust and aluminum foil. It turned out amazing and worked extremely well. A ballmill is a really useful tool. The only problem when running it over a longer period of time is that it is using quite a lot of energy... Great project!
Yes if you had a continuous source of moving water like a river, you could easily power a ball mill with that. Unfortunately Cody doesn't have a river near by.
Props to your old man rocking a swanson! Btw, you should make som sort of "funnel" for pouring the material and the balls. You already have the bolts for the door, which could be re-purposed as bolts for the funnel? I imagine that it's just a matter of some scrap metal and some welding, and you're golden :)
Watching you and your pops work together restores my faith in humanity. Willing to work, make their own tools, and generally cool as can be. Tell your dad I said the world needs more like him..... and you.
i think this is one of the best videos youve ever made. I loved it from beginning to end. especially how you and your dad worked together. put him on your channel more often
Just found your channel. Taught my dad how to arc weld to help in a reengineer or a 30" trommel. Didn't finish it before his cancer took him but this project reminded me of that. It was good to think about.
Along this line. A trick my dad taught me. Use a mountain bike derailer. Remove the gear and place a similar sized pulley. Also gives you adjustable tension which helps when later down the line you find your favorite belts aren't sold anymore and have to change to a brand that is slightly different.
Never seen anyone cut so well with a torch before. Folks, before we had cnc, computers, etc, people like Codys Dad helped build the world with their hard-earned skills!
Sounds like you get your electricity from an old 1910 CP engine/alternator. As vid progressed, I seen your yard, and my sorta joke made more sense. Then,.. The Mine! That old engine noise just must be an old gen set. Am I right? Maybe if I watched more of your vids I would know. Your place would be heaven for me, nothing better than lots of cool things to do. I have a good bit of heaven here where I live too, but on a much smaller lot.
Hey Cody, can you do some videos on that old hit and miss engine sometime? Also you might want to make a removable slide hopper that will give you like a big funnel to pour that material into so it will load the mill quicker. You could just slowly pour the bucket into it instead of going a pitcher at a time.
Thank goodness for Cody's Dad, and his Mom. They must be either saints or superheroes to have survived raising him. I think they did a pretty good job.
So why not just put a door on an electric cement mixer? They average 28-30 rpm and can handle hundreds of pounds, with the added bonus of being tippable to empty. Would it be because the motor may not be able to run as long as required for a ball mill?
Even then you can just replace the motor with one capable of doing so. Real reason is probably because they're expensive as heck compared to some old junk lying around that can be repurposed.
Kain Yusanagi true, I thought of that, but for its purpose, I figure one of them $200 northern tool deals would do just fine since interior fin design would be irrelevant if not removed entirely and commercial use probably isn't the plan for it.
It can probably handle the weight, but I assume the metal is still relatively thin and the erosion from the balls and material will wear out through very quickly. Cement, having water, kinda lubricates the walls, and some cement dries up on the walls too and kinda protects them. The cheap ones are probably made of the lowest quality materials too. But basically i just think it would just get holes through it quickly
Maybe I'm wrong, but as I understood you need center of rotation perpendicular to gravity (otherwise balls will stay in the bottom and all powder will stay on top). Also you need to be sure that everything that is placed inside of ball mill stays there, and open top won't make that easy.
MK I can see where you are coming from, some of it make sense, my main reason for asking is me and my dad used an electric cement mixer as a ball mill of sorts (similar in principle anyway) to hull hundreds of black walnuts at the same time though we added water as you stated, but it lasted 5 years before it quit and it was just a harbor freight special for $150 lol
"Lets make a washer out of this" I love how resourceful yall are! Most people would just throw the cut-out away as scrap, but you guys are always looking for other uses for everything!
This is the true American dream. Owning some land, exploring the land. Building cool things and learning things. Time for Cody to get a 1 hour segment a week on netflix
It's awesome to have channels like this on RU-vid and it seems since the site is changing, so much of the community is kinda focusing more and more on what they love to watch. Just makes a stronger support for Cody.
+captainnemo I've never seen Cody's mom in any video before however I've just checked out one of his videos (the gold plating one) that does incude his mother and you're right! :)
Things like this should be put into space soon. Stuff like this could bootstrap mining on Mars or Moon. Cobble together some solar arrays, a electric furnace, a ball mill, some robots. Then you got ingots of mixed metals. Maybe add some sort of metal sorter/filtering to purify the ore. AFAIK this hasn't yet been done. If this is miniaturized I could envision a compact cube 1x1x1 meter which has all of this built in and just drop it on the Moon and slowly build an army of this miner cubes. And from thereof build larger facilities and even habitats.
Since no one tells me the name of the song at the end when I ask (it's in plenty of C'sL vids), I'm gonna just tell the world what I call it in my mind: Cody'sLab Ending Theme Song #1 (There's at least 2 others).
Horribly i have been exposed to many folks that think most old no longer used stuff is junk , I hate their mentality and I can find repurposing in just about anything , thank God for people that have vision in design ! 🐯 tnx for video !
You and your Dad are so incredibly clever, it leaves me in awe the amazing things you guys make with stuff from around the ranch and around your house, reusing things that other people just throw out to make useful and helpful tools, you have no idea how much I appreciate the stuff you do!
Nice, really nice when you have to do something with your dad. My dad supported me, but never played when I was a kid or learn me anything. He is journalist and dont know to anything related to mechanic or electricity, even basic stuff.
