I think your boat needs an inner shell as a floor cover. In fact, the body should be two layers.

Pozdrawiam

Now reinforce the outside of the hull with fiberglass for rigidity and sealing all the leaks that will come up when the mechanical resistance of the water roughens up and thins the plastic. The workmanship was good... But there is a best practice to making anything that floats on the water that significantly reduces the potential for accidents and/or failures in the material/construction.

As long as overlapping joints of the plastic sheets are facing towards the back of the boat and the seams are sealed with a waterproof silicone adhesive... the boat should last quite a long time.

While good work the best use of these barrels is in pontoon boats.
@RichardLucas
@RichardLucas Месяц назад
Yeah, I don't know if that's the "best" use, but when you have an object that is serviceable in its original shape, it certainly is more efficient to keep that form, as the effort to put it into that form has already been expended and one could reap the benefit of that fact. But if you don't _want_ a pontoon boat, then it can't be the "best" use.

@@RichardLucas Obviously not the best pontoons but best use of these drums in boat form. Sealed cells that for the most part just need mounting.
@RichardLucas
@RichardLucas Месяц назад
@@gacattack1234 No, I understand they _could_ be used that way, but in order to claim it's "the best" way (a subjective valuation) you have to include what the person actually wants. The guy wanted a standard style boat, _and_ he wanted to try using these barrels, _and_ his skill made it work. He got _what he wanted,_ and that makes his solution the best one.

My neighbor who was a brainiac made a catamaran using oil drums halves back when they didn't have plastic drums. He put them 4ea long ways and brazed them together Then added copper tubing over it. He reinforced the hull by also bridging it with copper tubing. When he was done he sprayed the bottom a lot of coats as he did with the inside. He put an aluminum wave shield in the front. He put a 20hp motor on the starboard side as he operated it on the port side. The first trial checked out but it was completely under powered. So he kept increasing the Hp until the boat balance out. Eventually heard it sank due to an retaliation for stealing someone's girlfriend.

The thing with all amateur boatbuilding, including I have a lot of money in my pocket type building, is that you are always controlled to a great extent by what your local materials are. In my case, my designer was on the far side of the NA, near where epoxy was being made, Boeing surplus, and the incredible wood factory that the Pacific North West was. It was really hard to follow his plans. On the other hand, here in Ontario, people's blue docks are always coming apart. Those barrels are somewhat available. Still wouldn't probably make sense for me, but if you are in a part of the world with a lot of foreign aid and plastic polution, who knows...

It is better to weld the seams using a soldering iron and pieces of plastic. Polyethylene terephthalate should be welded. Or you can seal them with silicone sealant. Well, or spend 5-10 bucks on one or two layers of fiberglass, and also make a deck from the same plastic to make it easier to remove water, and add weight to the bottom to make it harder to turn over while standing on the water..

This is pretty cool, not sure how safe these boats are compared to boats created in traditional materials such as various fibber or just wooden boats. I can imagine these are ok on rivers, but how does that plastic handle sea water? Also I think an improvement would be to use a heated wire cutter to cut plastic or a similar tool. And recycle the scraps too. Using a saw creates a lot of plastic dust, which is both bad for environment and everyone else, while also being very bad for the worker(s). Of course, just reusing the barrel for their original purpose would be an even better use.

Ignorant me from 10-15 years ago would have loved this video more. If you're not collecting the micro plastics as you cut the barrels you're just creating micro waste that will end up in our water. I agree with recycling and the reuse of materials but I also believe in making sure that your take care of each step from start to finish. I'd rather him use only wood as it's reusable and not as harmful to the environment instead of plastic but what can you do? If you Google the state you're in asking how much micro plastics are in our drinking water you'll understand why I don't agree with the use of plastics. In my state, 69 tests were done all over the state and there was an average of 13 micro plastics in each test. That's a test tube, a very tiny vial, if you think about a bottle of water and how much you're drinking from those, it's just gonna get worse with more and more people having untreatable cancer. I love the boat build, the guy is creative and did a tremendous job on it, but I have different views on it as I've grown older and more wise. Love the build, good job.

This is horrible. If the barrels had any sort of toxic material, that is now in the water. He is creating lots of tiny plastic pieces that are just spread out onto the ground. He heats the plastic, which releases toxic fumes into the air. There are no "glues" that will seal the plastic, so it will leak. This man should be stopped.
