As of today, they are 41.3% complete and estimate they'll be done in 2030. They already have the boiler and cab done so it's looking like the project will be successful.
@jimmythatguy
@jimmythatguy Год назад
they have an entire tender already ,and they have started work on the frame, it wont be built as a single piece. its a whole bunch of pieces because obviously its way to hard to make a single cast now.
@WinterroSP
@WinterroSP Год назад
@@jimmythatguy thats one reason yes, but the primary reason for the split frame is so it can traverse curves better. That long of a rigid frame causes a lot of stress on the metal, having a bigger chance on cracks in the frame. Wich is a death sentence for the loco if not found early.

People said it would take a decade to restore the 3985 if she was done under Union Pacific and she’s already close to the point of getting her boiler sandblasted. I get the facts about rebuilding this kind of locomotive heck I bet it probably would be the same way if a brand new big boy was to be rebuilt from scratch except the build an engine like that would probably take all the way to 2040. It’s still gonna be great to see one of the toughest streamliners return again

The project will be completed and fail. Why? Because to build a locomotive lacks the expertise to do that today. So if the reach to build it the mostly will have all the baby problems with it that was on solvable with experience but that experience is lost because death of the people with knowledge.

Planet, the later replica of rocket, the replica iron duke... the idea was already old hat by the time tornado even started frankly. They just made a bigger faster replica. The history of replicas of lost locos goes like 3/4 of the history of locomotives. 😂 pretty much the second someone scrapped one to begin with someone else was thinking and doing the replica thing.

@@THE_flushingtoilet *built, tornado isn't actually an A1, nor is it a replca really, the whole thing is completely different spec to any A1 the LNER built. Not least because the LNER had it's own set of lost or unknown metallurgical standards for materials used that were not replicated in Tornado, instead modern readily available material specifications were evaluated and used. Also the construction methods diverge significantly in places as their are now cheaper and easier to work with alternatives(welding over riveting)

It would be awesome to see the official record for steam traction broken! The Brits have had it sat at 126 MPH for far too long. I love the fact they're doing this and hope like hell we get to see a new T1 running on her own steam. That said, if they can build a dang T1 from scratch, why the hell can't they rebuild a GG1 to working order? Updated electrical equipment to meet modern standards & run on the same system as Amtrak, but the same quill drive system. If they can cast a new chassis & drivers for the T1, surely someone can recast the frames & bogeys for the GG1 since the old ones have too many weld repairs from cracking from 50 yrs of service. I understand why it hasn't been done as of yet (money, lack of infrastructure, etc), but you cant tell me its impossible when you got an amazing group of folks building a T1 from the ground up..

@kristoffermangila

Well, many people (American and even British) do not believe that Mallard deserved that crown, due to the circumstances of the test. Test track's all wrong (being downhill) and Mallard sustaining damage after the speed run. In their POV, a proper high speed record run is something similar to a rail version of a Bonneville Salt Flats speed run: straight level track, and two runs for the fastest average speed. And with the most precise measuring equipment, of course.

By the time you lease passenger cars, pay for the insurance the class ones require, and the operating costs and there is no money left over, you are looking at least $2k per train ticket. Where as for 611 at Strasburg, people were only paying $30 on average per ticket to ride behind 611. It makes better business sense to go to short lines or tourist railroads. Look guys, records are meant to be broken. So if the T1 breaks the record, so what ? Records are meant to be recorded anyways. I mean Lebron broke Kareem's record so i don't see this being broken. For now, Mallard is the king for now

I can definitely see where you are coming from, but at the same time I think your point isn’t 100% valid. Sure, records are meant to be broken, but only if they are still relevant in any way, like, well basketball. Steam engines, in the other hand, haven’t been relevant on proper transport since the early 70s at the very most, braking the record now, with modern technology, something which mallard, Scotsman, or any previous record steam engine did not have. I’m not gonna say I hate the T1 trust, bc I don’t, it’s really cool that the building new steam engine idea has finally made its way over to the us in a mainline scale, but at the same time, braking a record that literally makes no sense at this point in time, it’s a we bit silly and petty

@@Robert_the47 true true. To me I hate when people say, "Records are not meant to broken". Like I know the Mallard is the world record holder I think it should but if someone is going to do it, then so be it.

@@Robert_the47 "I can definitely see where you are coming from, but at the same time I think your point isn’t 100% valid. ..." I think you have an irrational emotional attachment to Mallard holding a record that sent it to an early overhaul. That it was recorded on a partial negative grade, no big deal. lol. "... Sure, records are meant to be broken, but only if they are still relevant in any way, like, well basketball. ..." I find it perverse that you can invent such illogical reasons why steam records must be allowed to stand. Just because [insert emotional appeal here]. Basketball?! Really? There is hardly anything in the world more irrelevant to the world situation than basketball and other sports. "... Steam engines, in the other hand, haven’t been relevant on proper transport since the early 70s at the very most, ..." This statement shows how ignorant about steam traction you actually are. You likely are based in the UK, which dropped steam in 1968. Did you know that China built main line steam locomotives into the mid 1990s? They still provide maintenance and will build new steam locomotives on request. Iowa Interstate Railroad bought a pair of the QJ Class 2-10-2, fresh out of overhaul, from China in 2008. Within a year, IAI set the world record for steam-hauled revenue freight in the 21st Century, which has since been broken, I think. The post-steam era (1959) record revenue freight in the US was ~132 double stack containers pulled by 4-6-6-4 UP 3985 without helpers in 1993. Find the video here on YT, UP Challenger charges Hill 1993. "... I’m not gonna say I hate the T1 trust, bc I don’t, " ..." but at the same time, braking a record that literally makes no sense at this point in time, it’s a we bit silly and petty " It looks like you hate the larger loading gauge of US railroads, and the absolutely gigantic, 1MM lbs of the 4-4-4-4 Class T1 PRR 5550, which could take the Mallard, loaded onto a flatcar and break its 126 mph record with it IN TOW, just for the Lols. BTW, I'm impatiently waiting for SpaceX Starship with Raptor v3 engines to lay down 20MM lbs-force of thrust while lifting a loaded fuel depot into orbit, in support of Artemis HLS trip to the Moon! Mallard could be put into orbit, if it fit within the fairing! Lols!

It would've been better if you put The Flight's "Freight Train" music, since that's what The T1 Trust put as their theme in their "It Can Be Done" video.

Even though I would’ve preferred them to rebuild any NYC steam engine (excluding the Mohawks) I’m happy that they’re rebuilding a PRR T1

Should have tried building a new NYC Niagara.. They plan to break that speed record, but they won't because the FRA won't let them. Neither will the railroads who own the trackage.

Again, how about you start a group to build a Niagara locomotive from the ground up yourself? Also, you’re wrong with the second part because it will do high speed testing on the test loop in Pueblo, CO

I hope it gets built but there's no where that will allow them to try and break the speed records and if I remember correctly this engine had wheel slip issues so I don't think it'll even be fast enough to do so.
@ARG0T
@ARG0T Год назад
The prototypes didn't have wheel slip issues, plus the trust will rectify the wheel slip when it's built

The same test track that was used to test the top speed of the Acelas would be used to push this thing up to top speed

It's only "officially" a record... one that S1 and T1 broke regularly. Heck, even "Tiny-wheels" N&W Class J clocked 112mph on a scheduled run during PRR trials. The magic of precision roller-bearings and well-balanced reciprocating mass.

We did something similar in the UK building an old steam train up its called Tornado it is an LNER Peppercorn class a1 60136 which is an 4-6-2 Locomotive Capable of 100mph but may be able to do a higher speed.
@matyasselmek3673
@matyasselmek3673 11 месяцев назад
It was on a relatively small track tho and since A1 Peppercorn "Tornado" is newer and much more advanced, with streamlining it could surpass even Mallard.
