Monday's Car Video - the Caddy Van USA - the VW commercial vehicle that America never got.
► This video is presented by SoloWerks Coilovers, and we thank them for helping these videos happen! CHECK BELOW FOR EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT CODES including for the Mk1 Caddy - valid until October 16th, 2020!
The VW Caddy was first born in the USA, as the Rabbit Pickup Truck (in the Westmoreland PA factory). After that model ended in the early 1980's, the Caddy was never sold again in the USA - but it was in Europe, and throughout the rest of the world. It went from being exclusively a pickup truck, to only being produced in a van body, which is still in production in 2020.
This is the story of building a brand new VW Caddy Van, in the USA. Every single bolt by hand. Every wire. And the windshield wipers.
Today's video is presented by SoloWerks Suspension, who are based in Fresno, California, and part of the KW Suspension family. You can find out more details and purchase their coilover kits here:

VIDEO NOTES
We don't use a script, and sometimes I misspeak, sorry. Everything should be just about factually correct. I definitely called the Teensey3.2 an Arduino, which isn't totally correct, but hey, it's close enough.

It is wild to think that I see them ALL OVER as well, (Ireland) they're common cars, but you can not legally import one to the US for daily driving use until it's 25 years old.. So this is the only way to do this legally without crashing SEVERAL and spending hundreds of thousands.. possibly millions to get the NHSTA certifications and compliance licenses.

I remember the good old days of car modifying. Biggest problem we used to have when dropping different running gear into a RWD car was having to work out how to relocate the new gearboxes gear stick so it still stuck up in a usable location on the tunnel. :D Cars all got too complex in the last couple decades. Modification stumbling blocks used to be mechanical engineering related things, but now, the tallest hurdles are to do with getting all the little electrons dancing down the right wires.

I suggest you join CCUK ( caddyclub Uk ) on Facebook, someone posted your video there, that’s how i came here 😆 there’s really cool vans and great ideas for the interiors, even to make them mini camper vans. A function of the wipers is if you turn off the ignition and immediately operate the wiper switch, the wipers will move to a vertical position. Also if you hold in the lock button down for 5 seconds on the key the windows will wind up. If you hold in the un-lock button on the key, the windows will wind down.

Good point! I thought about it, and I did look at the wiring implications, but I decided that wasn't the type of 'fix' that I wanted to go with. It would be the answer on a concept / show car that wouldn't be driven, but.. my brain is weird and decided to go down the rabbit hole, haha.

If the official VW dealer Diagnostics (ODIS) work like here in germany the Computer will say : "I dont know this Vin. Have a nice day. Goodbye." I worked at a Skoda dealer some time ago, and retrofitting or swapping Modules (even with valid VINs) was always a nightmare with the official Tools (due to the online connection to VW).

It was pretty interesting when we did hook it up. We called the technician support line, and elevated one level before being able to try and have some fun with it. :-) 99.8% has been done myself with VCDS though.

I believe that you are absolutely crazy, and that is why I respect what you do! Absolute genius work! Can't wait to see the car on a ride. What are you planning for the interior in the back? Which exhaust did you use? And... independent rear suspension or rigid axle with flat springs? If you have independent suspension, how did you do that?

Jamie, have you ever looked into the hood latch switch? This is tied into to the wiper system through the LIN-bus and if you didn't setup a hood latch switch on this vehicle given how you have built it, or you did include it but it's currently switched to "open", the wipers won't work. Check into it!

Fantastic build - just saw it for the first time. Being from the US, I can see why you want a Caddy as do I (the Ram city, transit city aren't cool enough for us enthusiasts). Curious though- being that this shares similarities with the passat, could you have just swapped the hardware and most of the wiring from there? Also regarding wiper, would it have made more sense to find a wiring harness from europe and just plugged in, or is there VIN/module issues there? Wondering if it's possible to 'reset' every module in the van or do you have to buy new?

From what he said in the video I believe you can’t do this. Ours in the EU use the Linbus system and the us wiring loom he has uses a 2 relay system. He’s basically trying to take the signals from his relays in the loom to convert them into a linbus signal so the wiper motor he has for the the caddy will work. I’m guessing non of the US wiper motors would have worked with the caddy shape.
@JamieOrr
@JamieOrr 3 года назад
This is correct ; all Caddy Van use the LINbus system, but the USA chassis harness uses Relays. I could fit the full Caddy harness (I have two here) but then I would need to retrofit the full engine, emissions, and airbag systems to the USA style. I decided it was easier to make the wipers work on their own, than do that. But I still haven’t found the time :-)

@@JamieOrr the arduino way was a good solution too:) u can even make it whit a rain sensor if u program it right but u still need a switch for the legit right? here in the netherlands it is

The wiper thing, I had our base model caddy upgraded. Manual doors to remote Manual wipers to rain sensor, light sensor And here cames the thing, The light sensor for auto light also controls the rain sensor and the wipers. You need the driver and controller at the steering for auto wipers The light sensor and switch The mirror with the optical sensor. If the mirror with the light sensor is not connected the auto wipers don't work.
@JamieOrr
@JamieOrr 3 года назад
You're right, the rain sensing works on the LIN-BUS also :-) Interesting that you swapped the steering wheel controller- was your BCM able to handle it, or did you have to upgrade that also? Unfortunately my BCM doesn't support LIN.

My dad's had loads of caddy vans over here in Scotland. We've got one sitting outside right now for some work. I'm wondering if it's came out cheaper buying all the parts and building it yourself or if it's cheaper buying a factory built one.
@JamieOrr

Buying a factory built one would be SO much cheaper. Like, not even close. I've learned that car manufacturers are selling their cars for BARGAIN prices. Economies of scales etc for sure.
@tech4pros1

the issue here is US import laws, he needed a shell without a VIN so he could register it as a self-built car. anything imported and less than 25 years old has to be 'federalized' at huge expense (crash testing, emissions testing etc, not unlike the EU type approval process)
@bustersgarage
