Made your tester, 3d printed the Plug Thanks to your tutorial, Finished it up tonight, Needed it for a friends 2003 Dura Max 6.6 everything seems to be working on this Cluster. I would not even considered trying to repair this without your Awesome-tutorial Cannot Thank-you enough for sharing your Knowledge, time and effort.
Nice video, adding a testing procedure video using the OBD2 would be great. Checking the cluster gauges (Speedo, Temp, Fuel Level, etc.) would be great also!
I appreciate the video you made Jack. I've been scouring RU-vid for videos on how to make a simple test box. After about a week of searching, RU-vid graciously recommended to me your video and it is awesome, just what I was looking for. I am interested in checking out the OBD2 connector but as yet I don't have a scan tool. I am keeping an eye out for one though. Thank you!
I built a similar box but I use it for programming ECMs etc so I have banana jacks so I can connect an ECM harness or radio/cluster harnesses etc everything is colour coded. I even use the banana jacks for power input with a battery clamp harness to I can just connect with under the hood and bench program the ECMs, clusters etc
if anyone else has had problems with OBD testing, pin 10 on the OBD connector for the data line did not work for me; i used pin2 and it worked perfectly.
whats your other channel on audio repair? also i watch your tool video for auto diagnostics and was hoping you could get more in-depth on you computer setup plus some pointers or tips in getting started in the auto diagnostics. Im interested since my pops an oldschool auto electrician and would like to help him out getting more sidejobs or even starting his own shop since at the moment he working at a 18 wheeler electric shop which he is trying to get out of. ( just a 20 year old community college student trying to find a path in life)
JACK it is so good to see your making videos again hope you keep them coming you are so missed please keep them coming . Do you have a Facebook contact thanks and all the best .
Got a question. Have you made any videos were you are using your LCR tweezers. I’m a new subscriber and haven’t seen all your work. Look forward to watching more. Awesome channel. Thank you.🤙🏻
I'm really struggling to get this to work. I have a stack of GM clusters and I can't get a single one of them to do anything. If I connect A12 and B12 to ground and B11 and B9 to +12 it should do something right? Does A6 need to be hooked up for the cluster to just power up?
I built this tester just like this but without the leds for the switches and with an external power supply, in the video he only hooks up the positive terminal on the switches, constant power and the signal wires from the connector. My switches do nothing when pressed however the back lights and turn signals are constantly on when the unit is powered up just can't toggle. Can anyone help?
Super helpful vids, thanks for making them. I am seeking a signal that tells me my 2002 escalade is not in Park. I was hoping to snarf it from the instrument cluster connector but from your vids I can see PRNDL is coming over the data feed... so that won't work. Do you happen to know where I can get a 12v or ground signal that tells me the tranny is not in Park? Thanks!
Hello Jack... I need to test the back lights, turn signals, and read the mileage on 99/02 clusters. Could I pay you for the information detailing which wires to use in the pinout?.... I'm going to make a test station like you built here.... Thanks
Dood did you apply for a patent that is cool is there already something out there like this cluster diagnostics is always a little challenging would this check terminating resistors In can bus which I think terminate in cluster
Hey Jack, did you ever do a 99-02 pinout connector for a power supply to bench test the instrument clusters? I would like to add it to my tester. Thanks, Brian
Hey jack sorry to bother you. I am just checking to see if you got my previous comment. Please reach out to me if possible. It won't take long and its in the benifit of both. Thanks
Jack, isn't pin 2 on the DLC the Class 2 Data ckt (see 21:18 )? My diagram shows pin 10 as vacant on 2003-2006 GM trucks. Even your previous video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zy3j9AZdAsE.html ) shows pin 2 as the data pin on the DLC? Thanks!
I need to double check that asap. I'm not at my desk right now. If I made a mistake I need to fix the video right away and seriously thank you. I do not want to put bad info out there. I just switched from alldata to identifix and pulled up the pinout before making the video. I know my last video is correct because that's the one I always use.
Pin 10 was not working for me. I switched to Pin 2 and also used Pin 4 as ground vs. Pin 5 in this video. Another video of Jack's calls out Pin 10 and Pin 4. Once I made these changes I was able to connect an ELM327 dongle to my version of this bench test box and issue cluster sweeps and turn on all indicator lights.

99 to 02 then 03 to 06 and finally 07 to 2010. Surprisingly they all have issues . 99 to 02 the display solder joints break and occasionally the steppers go bad. The 03 to 06 have the most issues. Everything from bad steppers to broken solder joints everywhere, the bulbs burn out , the microprocessor solder joints go bad causing the language to constantly change and the main connector bresks away from the board (all easy fixes). The 07 to 10 just have display issues and are pretty solid. The 02 to 07 trailblazers and Malibu's also used the same steppers so they have guage issues just as much as the others.
Lol. Last comment. The climate controls in the gm truck line also have a lot of issues. The same tester will cover those . Im going to post a video soon on repairing the bad encoder/ potentiometers that make the temp jump all over the place and also how to do an led light upgrade on them.
