Building a Chicken Coop in the Barn - Part 2 - Building the nest box and chicken roost

We finish building the chicken coop inside our barn. We build the nest box and chicken roost. We also attached the hardware cloth to the walls of the coop. This makes the entire coop enclosed with cage wire. Now our chickens should be safe in this new coop and easier to take care of inside the barn, out of the weather.

My husband has built 4 chicken coops and a tractor over the years, and every time he says “that was a way bigger job than I thought it would be”. 🤣

Put a cord or chain on the egg collecting door so when collecting the door becomes a shelf to set your collecting basket on. 👍 Lumnah Acres did that on their New Yolk City. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓👍👌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Looks great 👍

I’d turn the 2x4 roosts sideways (the 3” side up), as keeping them with the 2” side up requires the chickens to grab onto it, sometimes causing issues with their claws. I have ten chickens and 2 nest boxes. All ten chickens use one box. They wait in line with a vacant one right next door.

I used needle nose pliers to hold my small staples until I came across a nice battery powered stapler. Mine was made by Milwaukee. It’s a 12V size and was pretty cheap at $76 on Amazon. I’m sure other brands make them as well. I decided to stay with one manufacturer so my tools all used one brand and it was Milwaukee but other brands make these as well. The 12V size is lighter and is plenty powerful enough for a stapler. It’s a real labor saver. Good luck. I really enjoy your farm videos.

Looks great, the purch on the laying boxes might turn into roosts. If it does put a round pole up there, they can still fly up to get in but they don't like to roost on small round ones.

You might want to consider putting some of that hardware cloth in front of the window. Keep the chickens from jumping up and hitting it when they are trying to sit up on the ledge..older glass can be fairly brittle.

Great job. Other than the cement floor and walls, my barn looks the same inside. You have no idea how much help, encouragement and perfect timing your video is to me-- I'm raising (now) 21 chicks--tonight they're in dog crates in garage!! I thought todays project would be roosts for existing pen; i bought wood and brackets for perches, went in the barn to discover raccoons feasted on 4 of my chicks! Watching your work makes me feel I can do the same thing in my barn to replace existing pen, so the rest of chicks will be safe. I can't say thank you enough!! Also, love the tri-color goats! I've just got 2 full size Alpines (rescues) left, but am planning for more! (It's an addiction!

I know I am a little late suggesting this but what I have done in the past and what works very well is if you hinge a simple roost to the wall for Instants my roost is 6 foot wide and 6 foot long made out of one by fours I hinged it to the wall then I hung a 2 foot piece of chain or Jack chain from the ceiling and when I need to clean my coop I just raise up the roost hang it from the chain and that makes everything clean up very nicely and simple. Thanks for all of your great RU-vid content

If there are ghosts in the barn, then ya'll need to include pics! Your coop is looking good! I love the nest box.. You have plenty of nests. You will find that your hens will all lay in one or two of the boxes.. You might want to round iff the edges of all of the roost cross pieces, so the hens can grasp them comfortably without the edges digging into their feet. it's so nice to have the tools you need for pretty much whatever you want to make.. Like having a well-stocked kitchen... everything is there..

You did e very thorough job of predator proofing it and it will pay off with peace of mind and happy hens over the years. The only thing you need to change is that chickens need the 4inch side up on the roosts. Five nest boxes should be plenty because they will no doubt all have the same favourite nest box and insist on using one out of the five boxes. Mine would even squeeze in and lay together rather than use the empty nest box next door.

I love the chicken coop in your barn. I live in Australia & we don’t have big barns like yours - wish I had one! I find that my chickens prefer a wider roost, so I use 3x2s, with the 3 inch side flat for them to roost on. Chickens actually cover their feet with their feathers to keep them warm. I’d watch out for hens jumping out one end of the nest box, when you are collecting eggs from the other end.

Looking very nice. You do need the roost higher then the nest box cause the chickens will roost in the nest boxs. The top hens need to roost on the highest perch.
@fancybrooks3156
@fancybrooks3156 5 лет назад
The coop looks great, but you probably would have done just as well to have gone out in the woods and cut two small limbs the width of your coop and hung them across the top as your roosts (at two different levels). They wouldn't be as aesthetically pleasing as the roosts you built on the floor, but if you put them in, I would be willing to bet that the chickens would choose them over the ones that are lower down. Or, you can find a way to raise the ones you built up off of the floor so that they are closer to the ceiling. Also, your door will allow you to throw in food scraps without entering, but you will still have to enter to provide water for the chickens. I also don't think you want to get your chicken feed mixed in with chicken poop, so I don't know how much of a time saver that door will be for you. Just some thoughts. Hope they are something to think about. If not, only good intentions were meant.

nice work! we're turning one of our barn stalls into a coop this year. It's 14' x 15' and we're going to use plywood and insulate. The rest of the barn is still being updated so we wanted a nice secure spot for them. We'll have a chicken hatch out to the pasture behind the barn and at least two windows for light and ventilation. It's probably overkill, but I'm hoping it works, we have so many different predators to consider :(

greetings: fantastic construction, very nice looking. as i see it the board in front of the nests will eventually end up being a roost and will be too hard for them to get over to the nests (too far to step over and too short to fly to). try another board in between or a wide floor board. i must say you and i have similar mates, both pretty and very helpful......g

Looks good. Hardware cloth is such a pain in the neck but necessary IMO. Nice nest boxes. Most would recommend to situate your roost higher than your nest box, otherwise they will roost in the nest box, poop in it and then lay in it. Are you going to have a chicken run outside or just in the barn?

We will let them run in the barn and barnyard. And any pasture area that is open to the barnyard.

You may find the chickens will roost on that bar in front of nest boxes, chickens like nesting on the highest point. Hard to guage if it's higher than the bigger roost structure.

You are correct. Some if the chickens are roosting in front of the nest box. But all the roosts are getting used. They seem to spread themselves out in small groups.

Is there any reason why you couldnt have a plastic tray in the laying boxes that would act as an easy way to clean the insides of the boxes.. Also, what about sealing the concrete floor and walls for easier cleaning...
@CountryViewAcres
@CountryViewAcres 5 лет назад
The concrete is pretty rough. Very old floor. It would probably need to be covered with some self leveling cement to have a smooth surface that would clean well. As for the nesting box, we haven't had much issue with just using hay or straw. It seems to catch everything and is easy to clean out.
