Just be mindful with the dual battery plugged in the vehicle now that you have a lithium battery as the starter battery your Victron charger will start drawing power immediately as the voltage setting was assuming a lead acid base voltage 12-12.8V drawing from the starter battery self isolating until your alternator comes on at 13.5-14.6V and above, you may need to ensure a start stop relay or isolator to prevent draining your starter as the resting voltage of the Lithium will be at or above 13.6V
@duncanbrown7160
@duncanbrown7160 2 года назад
Doesn’t the Victron dc to dc have a smart engine on detection sequence? I thought it measured the voltage every minute or so to detect if the engine was on thus shutting itself down if it notices engine is now off and starter battery not charging? Might be confused but I thought that was the whole point of going for a smart dc to dc charger.
@angusmacgyver1390
@angusmacgyver1390 2 года назад
@@duncanbrown7160 Yes, from Victron info "the default setting (13.3V) is based on generic smart alternator setup. Most smart alternators will generate 13.5V when the engine is running, and regular alternators will normally generate >14V. In an application with a regular alternator the restart level can therefore be set to a higher value, e.g. 14V." "Shutdown level: The default setting is 13.1V. this creates a hysteresis between the restart level and prevents excess discharge of the starter battery." Notice in my comment "the resting voltage of the Lithium will be at or above 13.6V " this is already above the default setting of 13.3V to start/restart and keep the charger on. So even during startup as lithium batteries maintain a steady voltage and strong current there will be no major dip or ramping of voltage required to shutoff the charger. Tyler may have to check what his resting voltage on his starter battery is and he may be able to adjust the Victron charger trigger voltage, but as my own Lithium battery tends to hold a resting voltage of 14.3 or slightly above. this may be too high for the Victrons settings

This is brilliant. It’s now my go to design for when I’m at the “dual battery” place in my list of upgrades.

Very cool. Love the added advantage of being about to camp away from the car if you want and have power so you can run the fridge, lights, charge phones etc. Plug it back in when you are moving onto the next stop and it will be charged up in no time. I know most people camp next to the car, but you never know what camping spot you may come across and having the option to pick it up so easily sounds great to me.

Nice setup mate, but I'd definitely strap it down, a head-on collision above 80km I guarantee it will plow through the seat. Better to be safe than sorry!

. Portability is feature I like best. I've got a standard battery box with a 95amp lead acid, it serves me well. I use it in my Prado, a mates car and it's great when there's a blackout to charge phone, lights, I've even used it to run a 12v shower during said blackout. Great content buddy👍👍

Smick set up mate but I did notice a couple of things the lid on the box has no over extend cable so if you drop the lid open it may tear the hinges off ! The other is your vent holes in the box for cooling are blocked by the seat on one side and the door on the other Very neat and tidy job tho well done mate now for some R&D to test it please let us know how it goes 😊

Great setup Tyler. Ask your auto electrician to connect the starter battery input to the smart shunt voltage input 2 as well. I tapped it off from the DCDC input terminal. Nathan from XploringOZ has an episode " LITHIUM is OUT for now... " where he reveals his experience with a lithium starter battery in a dual battery system. You may experience your starter battery going flat or significantly drained as lithium batteries don't have sagging terminal voltages like lead acid batteries. This variation is what the DCDC uses to intelligently stop drawing current when the start battery isn't receiving charge from the alternator. An ignition triggered high current isolation relay could solve this issue.

The victron has an ignition switch feature which you can hook up to only charge when the ignition is on. It comes with a bridging wire as standard but you just need to run a small cable to the ignition switch.

Good one Tyler. 👍 It looks like there is still room in the battery box to fit the Victron Solar Controller. It's always good to have an option of being able to connect solar to your auxiliary battery. BTW, do you know what they've done to the lithium battery to make it suitable for under bonnet installation?

Love the setup Tyler !!! I use the Victron gear in my Patrol and it never let me down. As for space, have you looked at/seen the Horizon Touring Rear Storage box for the GU (Passenger side)? It makes use of the otherwise very wasted space in the rear left side cavity. I have my battery and Victron charger in there and it is by far one of the best mods ive done on the Patrol. It would've been perfect for retaining 7 seats AND the space you used for your battery box.

I guess you kinda need it given the fact you need to monitor your battery for charging purposes. I'm currently deciding if i need a battery monitor or a volt guage. do you think for someone who uses the car 4x4ing + camping once a month (if that) requires a battery monitor or should I just stick to a volt guag and watch my volts. I feel knowing the amps in/output will be handy, though does the average Joe really need it? 🤔 dual battery monitor $250-35p redarc volt guage $170-200

Great setup and great idea about the removablle battery box. My only concern is the vent holes in the box to reduce heat buildup seem to be obstructed by the seat and rear door, so would be almost useless. Has this been an issue or have you thought about it?

@@wadefuller7283 you can buy lithium crank/winch batteries (expensive end of the range) not sure what’s the difference to a “normal” lithium battery. Some have a reserve, so you can just run 1 battery. If you manage to run it flat, open the bonnet push a button on the battery and there’s enough power to start -> that’s their marketing spell, I haven’t had one of them yet.

Should have just used the Horizon Touring rear wing box for the battery. Can't you charge camera gear on 12V? Does every RU-vidr really need a massive inverter? How can you take 6 people camping with no space for bags, chairs, food or gear?
