In order to save money, but definitely not time, we decided to make our own dustless sand blaster, taking a page from what Project Brupeg has done to prep much of their boat :)

Awesome work on the blaster guys. It looks fantastic! Really cool to see it all come together fast and work just as it should.

I had the exact same part that broke on my AR pressure washer pump. I took it apart just as shown here which is how I found the problem. It was pumping at about 1/3 normal pressure. I don't know about the brand shown here, but I was able to buy a replacement rod connector for about $18. I put it all back together and everything runs smoothly at the rated 2200 psi now.

Well done! Looks like that farm is a goldmine of proper old tools! I’m using a karcher k2 with a small wet blast attachment, no where near as fast as you’re creation! But it does the job and no need for big air compressor as it uses Venturi to suck the crushed glass in my case up and into the water 😁

Oh cool! That’s probably amazing for smaller jobs!

9:00 kind of funny how you got to keep things really really dry before you make them really really wet.

Another way is to run hard line out of the compressor at with a 1/4 or 1/2 inch drop per foot for a decent length span along a wall so that the air will cool and the condensation will stick to the piping wall and flow back in to the compressor or tank to accumulate and drain out the bottom.

A large receiver tank mobile or fixed and with or without a Franzinator (look those up) works a treat and permits ganging any number of compressors. For example my electrical service doesn't suit a 20 HP three phase compressor but runs two industrial "real 5HP" machines and various consumer joke (motors rated "SPL with no HP commitment) compressors. Industrial surplus "Receiver tanks" are awesome because hobbyists rarely know what they are making them cheaper to score at auctions. They're heavy so I welded a lifting lug to the plug on the top of mine to raise it with a homebuilt jib. Horizontal would have been more convenient but I'll take either. I no longer bother with hard line because I decided to make everything in my shops mobile for easy rearrangement as I add or change equipment. I use red pneumatic hose and Chicago couplings with valves at strategic locations. I hang hose using rings sawn from scrap pipe which I either weld hooks or bolt-on tab mounts to depending on location. I treat my shops collectively as a jobsite where nothing is permanent but change and it saves a shitload of work.

That looked like a top notch bit of fabricobbling, Logan is indeed a gifted mechanic, a perfect match for that boat. Was that drying chamber enough to keep the air from soaking the sand? I know what kind a pain in the butt that type of thing can be when living someplace where it's almost always 100% humidity. And free sand, yay!
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing 2 года назад
He is very skilled! Always creative with his solutions. And the air dryer works surprisingly well, even in the wet winter time 😌 the free sand was also a godsend! Saved us a decent amount of money

I have a question! I've seen people just put a venturi in a bucket of sand with the pressure washer attachment and it seems to work alright, but if i got a blasting pot and put the sand hose to it, would i have to pressurize the pot with an air connection, or would the sand feed itself to the bottom of the pot and through the hose?

We bought the “heavy duty sandblast kit” from Amazon. Not sure on the specific part number
@ruatarengsicolneyrengsi8924
Great job. However, I thought that they normally blast with sand only.
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing Год назад
they do both. from what i understand they started out with wet blasting and then ended up moving to dry because the yard wouldn't let them wet blast anymore

Could have saved more time and money buying something off Fb marketplace vs rebuilding tearing apart multiple pumps and putting 3 things together. I’ve found there is a fine balance between actually saving money diy and in the end spending 3x more due to time and effort actually getting the project to work.
@WaywardLifeSailing

it cost us a total of $150 to put this entire system together. We live on an island in an area where very few people partake in industrial activities like this. Finding a comparable system would have been very difficult, and we probably still would have had to rebuild pieces of whatever we bought to make things run properly. We def chose the cheaper and quicker option for what we were working with.

For dustless (at least fairly dustless) sand blasting a "Vacu-Blast" machine would fill the bill. I see Amazon has one made by a company called "Allsourse", and there are other manufacturers.

We have a similar blasting unit we have been using for smaller pieces of steel. Not so useful for an entire chain locker unfortunately

Those vac-blasters come in sizes up to needing a 1000cfm compressor! A pain to use aswell.
