It’s amazing how one project can bring together techniques from many previous projects. Most of the modifications described in this video have appeared in my previous videos. For more information...

GP7 or GP9? Unfortunately, just because a given locomotive is clearly a GP7 doesn’t mean it was manufactured and sold as a GP7: the Athearn “blue box” GP9, first produced in 1957, was in fact a GP7, and many manufacturers since have simply copied that model and sold their own versions as GP9s. Athearn corrected its mistake in 1998 and started selling the same model as a GP7. Because of this initial mistake, there are quite a few GP7s out there which are boxed as GP9s.
Dummy locomotives used to be common in the hobby. Often, a modeler would buy a single powered locomotive along with one or more dummy locomotives to model multiple power units. This is no longer the case: as one manufacturer explained it, “Dummy locomotives are generally not available any longer as the cost of a motor only saves about $5-10. These days most of the cost of a locomotive model goes towards production which can be very time consuming as models can have as many as 200 or more parts.”

Brilliant conversion from junk to jewel. I open out the headlight holes slightly with a number 47 drill and use the longer 1.8mm LED's for headlights. Then use Tulip matte dimensional fabric paint to stop light bleed inside the shell when I'm adding lighting. Tony.

Amazing work. There is no way I would ever attempt something this complex.

Wow, what a transformation ! I wish I knew you had this projcet in mind. In my junk pile I have a couple of chassis that would have fit that shell, I would have donated them to the project. keep the videos coming, it is a pleasure to what your projects.

Thanks for the tips on distinguishing GP-7's from GP-9's. I was wondering about that. My Central of Georgia GP-7's don't have that dynamic brake blister. I was wondering about that also. Thanks again. I wish I'd found this video when I converted a couple of GP-38-2's (Tyco or LifeLike-don't remember) to Norfolk Southern GP-38-2's and had to find the proper snow plow pilots that they use. I had a difficult time and a lot of shims to body mount the couplers. Cheers - eastern TN

I watch so many of your videos I finally had to subscribe. Your videos are very interesting and really help modelers solve problems they encounter and you give excellent advice. I just got through painting 100 sets of Walthers Proto 36" metal wheelsets with metal axles and 100 sets of 33". What a task. I found an old pint can of Rust-O-Leum (prob. 40 yrs old) rusty metal primer (lacquer based) and used it to paint my wheelsets a nice rusty brown. I had to thin it with some lacquer thinner. That's my go to paint for wheelsets now and I've used it on my 2 Tichy TG ore cars. I've also painted a boxcar with it as it is the perfect red oxide for boxcars. Thanks for posting and all the information you provide in the video description. Cheers from eastern TN

Thanks for subscribing! Kudos to you for painting all those wheelsets. That is a tedious - but rewarding - task. Did you use an airbrush, or did you try the method I showed in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tYUxlVx8Nc4.html (time stamp 3:18)

Wow, fantastic job. Quite a lot of precision measurements involved. Very, very nice

A few years ago, I bought this digital caliper: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017KUC6XQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 This device has saved me a *huge* amount of time and guesswork over the years. It'll cost you about $20, but if you do much scratchbuilding or kitbashing, it will pay for itself many times over.

You never fail to amaze me. In fact you've been quite a source of inspiration to me and a project I'm currently undertaking - the rebuild of an old English Blue Pullman train. The task looked almost impossible but seeing you rebuild many of the models (such as the car that looked like it fell out of the ugly tree) made me realise that such a rebuild was not so impossible for me either. Thank you for your videos, they're so much appreciated.

It's an Athearn shell - why not us an Athearn dummy underframe. It already has trucks.
@rwissbaum9849
@rwissbaum9849 3 месяца назад
Three reasons - no, four: First, although the shell looks like other locomotives sold as Athearn GP7s, there are a lot of different GP7 models out there, and they are not dimensionally identical. Second, Athearn retooled its GP7s at least once, so it could be difficult to identify which underframe fits. Third, there's no guarantee that I could even buy the part. And fourth, I had all the materials and parts on hand (except for the snowplow pilot), so there was no need to buy even more parts!

@@rwissbaum9849 LOL. I think I have a scrap underframe in a box somewhere. Don't recall what Athearn model it was for though.

Really enjoyed the video. Canopy cement is new to me. Is there a particular one you recommend for this application?
@rwissbaum9849

I use Evergreen canopy cement, but I expect any brand would work. I actually got this idea from Boomer - see his "Boomer Diorama" channel. He used GAC 500 by Golden for a similar application. I didn't have any GAC 500, so I tried canopy glue and worked just fine.
