Maybe add some wire with a clip to the lid? That way when you open the structure lid, the can lip also opens?

@April - I would recommend closing the gaps in the lids. Wheeling the cans in backwards and leaving the lids on the cans open. When it's trash day, the handles to maneuver the full cans will be easily accessible and closing off the wood gaps will reduce the chance of water filling them up during the rain. Nice job!

add a string with hook from the bin-lid to the wooden lid. No need to hold any of them when open

Keith D. Twing Agree, they’ll work for awhile but no telling the longevity that way, definitely should be flipped. And to the other guy, yeah people know more than other people, doesn’t mean he’s an “expert” he’s spreading his knowledge. That’s how humans went from living in caves sparking fire with rocks to skyscrapers and electricity. Never a bad thing to learn something new, why are you watching this video?? Ive been a GC for 12 years and learn new ideas from these videos and comments everyday. I can build this with my eyes shut but maybe the way she did it would look better or last longer or it’s cheaper to build you never know. A true GC or DIYer constantly takes advice and evolves and never claims ignorance that they know everything. Get real kid, live and learn and don’t bash other people for trying to share their input.

April, Great job!. One suggestion though. You may wanna install a string, coat hanger, copper cable to unlatch the door latches from inside, just in case you have kids running around and trapping themselves inside. I learned my lesson when my wife trapped herself inside a tool shed many years ago. :)

For anyone thinking about using a bungee cord (just a word of caution from someone who used to work for an eye dr). We saw SO many blinding injuries from bungee cords flying off one end. Always put hands on BOTH sides before loosening one end to keep the other from flying off.

Great job April. One suggestion to make your life even easier. Permanently attach a properly sized bungee cord from the inside wooden lid and attach the other end to a drilled hole in your trash can. Now when the gas shock raises the wooden lid it also lifts the plastic garbage can lid. Life is good again!

You really need to treat the underside of the floor and bearers to help prevent rot. You should also raise the bearers up from the ground on bricks or concrete block. Also place some membrane material i.e slate, building membrane or plastic or aluminum sheet between the blocks and the bearers. This will prevent any moisture rising up from the ground and soaking into the timber bearers.

Once you paint you can't go back. I painted some outdoor Adirondack chairs in white and regret it. The paint won't last and you will have to repaint more than will want to. I would recommend some type of oil finish like pure lindseed oil. It's very easy to reapply.

I want to build an 8-yard front load dumpster for my bags of recycle's of bottles and cans we have lots of bags filled with bottles and cans but the bags get to much sun then fall apart when u grave them so the front load dumpster is to protect them from the Sun it will also have wheels in case I want to ever move the dumpster in a different location so the back panel is going to be 6 ft tall and 5 ft wide and front panel is 5 ft tall and 5 ft wide and the bottom is going to be 5 feet wide and 6 feet long so it not exactly an 8 yd front load dumpster but it is close to it normally a 8 yd front load dumpster is 7 ft tall back panel with 6 ft wide and front panel is 6x6 panel and bottom is 5 feet wide and 6 feet long but my space is only a little bit over 5 ft I would say maybe almost 5 ft and a half so I'm just going to make it 5 ft wide and 6 ft tall and front panel 5 ft x 5 ft and bottom panel make it longer from the front to back so it'll be 5 ft wide and 6 ft long giving it more room and then the lid will be one giant lid and I'm going to make it out of two by fours and if possibly plywood panels probably marine grade or something like that so they'll make it more waterproof but I am going to possibly paint it or stain it I wanted to look nice but that'll be for a later time and maybe a cover over that space so that when it rains it doesn't get wet in case the waterproofing solution that I use may not be good enough reason for using plywood cuz I don't want the sun to leak inside and get one of the bags brittle you said it's yourself the panels that you were using will shrink and then if they shrink then they'll be spaces where the sun can come in

Cool video! Why not put a light with a motion sensor? That way you don't have the light all night, don't need to go and switch it on and off every time you go out side and with the timer - It will work only in the night so you don't worry about it switching on in the day and waist electricity

I was thinking along the same lines; having something that lifts the lid. BUT instead of rope, a length of thin wire/cable with a hook with maybe a loop to catch it. Then you'd only have to slip the hook and maybe hook it out of the way. The details would have to be worked out but I think at some point not having to reach in to lift the lid will be key. ; )

@squalazzo
@squalazzo 8 лет назад
even 2 neodymium magnets like the one you can find in every pc harddrive can do the job... if you remove the bin, the force would be enough to detach them, but normally they are very powerful and sure can do a stable link when you lift the top :)
@MikeCheung1
@MikeCheung1 8 лет назад
With a bit of tweaking to the gas spring mounting locations, you should be able to get it to move over center and start to extend a little when the lid is in the lowest position, making the hook unnecessary. The spring will both hold the lid closed and open.

Looking for one that has hinged lift lid that opens on front side and the doors to remove on the back side. This way the side to remove the trash cans to put on curb are accessible outside the fenced yard but the hinge lid accessible from the yard. Or one with doors on front and back. Many I know want the later version especially for the elderly and disabled having easier access.

i’ve been creating a design in my head for a garbage storage just like yours, it’s so eerie how similar we see this project and how we want it to function. swing open doors, liftable lid, having two separate lids instead of one, even down to using gas shocks for the lids (which is what made me write this lol). granted, other people might have videos doing it the same way but i’ve only watched yours. i needed inspo for what i was gonna use to make the doors swingable, so thank you for that ! the only difference is i was going to use pallets because i can get them for free to save on costs (4 bins in total, so two pallets each for floor, lid, front/back walls, and then one for each side wall). using pallets themselves as walls , will i run into any problems besides the storage just being heavier than normal? i’m a complete amateur with woodworking projects and all i have is a drill/impact, circular, and reciprocating saw lol. thanks for any advice you’re willing to share

just an idea that popped into my mind towards the end of the video...A string and clip attached from the garbage can lid to the enclosure lid, so the enclosure lid will lift the garbage can lid? Hope this makes sense, lol. Keep it up fellow maker!

Yeah I thought of doing something like that but wasn't interested in having to untie something to remove the bin. It's very simple and quick to lift the lid open so I don't mind keep it the way it is.

I hear that

you could have attached the cabinet lid to the lid of the bin so that when you open the cabinet led the bin lid opens as well....just a small hook and chain so you can disconnect it for rubbish day???

Yep you could, but I really don't think it's needed.

Nice build and video. How about running a rope and a hook from the inside of the enclosure lid to the trash can lid so opening the enclosure lid will open and hold open the trash can lid at the same time?

Yep you could, but I didn't want to add anything to mess with when removing the bin. I think it's super quick and easy to just open the lid and toss in the trash.

: ) Haha, well I mentioned the reason at the end. I have to wait for the treated wood to dry for another week, then I'll paint it.

Thanks for sharing. It definitely improves the looks and makes the bins critter-proof.
