Great kart guys. I know I am late but just in case you do another one or some viewers are watching, I have to point out a few safety concerns 1. the gussets on the corners need 4 bolts (2 on each tube) 2. bolting on square or round tubing is not really a strong hold because if you tighten the bolts too much it will only crush the tubing and can never be really tightened properly (unless you put some spacers inside the tubing so it won't crush) that's why welding is the best way to go...
@fishertech
@fishertech 2 года назад
regarding point 2, is it really a big deal for a small recreational kart that isnt going to see offroading or crazy abuse? I am also making a no weld go kart , still making a frame (I am realizing it's probably better to learn welding and buy a welder for this because making every bolt hole line up is tough). Do i need to worry about catastrophic failure?

How did you do the spindles for the steering without helding? Ive been scratching my head trying to come up with a solution.
@PsionicKevin
@PsionicKevin 2 года назад
Mounted C brackets on outside of each custom 0.25 inch thick plates on front frame. Then spindles to each C bracket. Had to remake once due to some unexpected clearance issue we didn’t see first time, but worked out 2nd time.

We are trying to make a DIY go-kart too. We found a motor has 6.5 HP but without clutch or a way to keep it from driving off when you want to start the engine. How did you do it? I heard something at 1.55 in the video but I can't understand it. What did you use?
@PsionicKevin
@PsionicKevin 6 лет назад
There are torque converters which basically have centrifugal springs which expand as it rotates faster spinning a belt from low to high ratio, and the driven spring also drives a sprocket which drives the live axle on my kart.

Hey bro, I'm actually building a go kart similar to yours. How did you attach the steering wheel to the steering axle? Because I've actually encountered a problem with my build. My steering wheel keeps coming loose from the axle everytime I try to turn it. Any tips? Thanks
@PsionicKevin
@PsionicKevin 6 лет назад
Hey glad to hear about your project. I'm not sure exactly how yours is mounted so I can't give you an exact recommendation for how to fix yours. For me, my wheel is mounted to a u shaped custom hub, and then drilled through the two sides of the "U" and the steering column as well. It's held by a bolt and nut with spacers to reduce play and blue loctite to deal with vibrations loosening the nut.

Prob would've been smart to do, but the budget was stretched on materials and performance since I was in hs at the time. Kart was built to withstand a crash with minimal repairs, and plan was to just trust my driving skills and bail safely if needed.

@PsionicKevin 6 лет назад
Do your research on any stuff you've never heard about or aren't sure about, document it so you have a reference, CAD your design, create a spreadsheet for cost analysis, and make sure to prepare for potential obstacles with backup plans because building something usually never goes according to the first plan.

@virtualgod3324
@virtualgod3324 4 года назад
Why did you use that thing (whatever its called, im nearly complete noob on this topic) instead of a centrifugal clutch?
@PsionicKevin
@PsionicKevin 4 года назад
At the time, a torque converter was cheaper and effective method as a "multigear" transmission while only running as a single speed (hence the single sprocket). Otherwise, there would be the need for a clutch pedal & multiple gear-sets which would cost more money. Hope this explains your question.

Nick Kaarslev I think that my belt slip and chain tension was a little iffy pre-painted (as seen in the video), but when I remounted the power train, everything was calibrated properly so it runs better than it seems in the video of the build process.

I really hope you take the time to read this comment. I just wanted to give a little tip that could possibly save you from future harm. Never use a grinder (or anything else that causes sparks) in the same area as your gas can. Store your gas can in another shed or even put it outside around the corner while you are grinding.

The scratch in the title refers to the amount of money spent. I'd say this is from a kit, not scratch. From scratch would be a free motor and free metal. Something from nothing? How much did this cart cost when it's all said and done? You probable could buy a new cart that's faster and better for the same price. Good work
