Id wanna do this so bad in the future, such a lovely job. Do you have any advice or tips for someone in high school wanting to learn about this job? Thank you for posting stuff like this, even though I have no idea about anything relevant it's so interesting & cool to me. What are your personal pros and cons about the job?
@mcintosh.daughter

Christian, I started in the trades then became an ER nurse. I've been back in the trades since 2013. Like the medical field, there are many different and greatly rewarding professions in the trades. Expand your knowledge through books, magazines, journals, videos, social. Ignore the Get Rich Quick, Living Large content (though possible), and consume quality information like what Matt produces. Working in the trades has its stresses and challenges, but is outrageously rewarding.

@@mcintosh.daughter Thanks for your reply, it's very helpful. I will definitely continue watching Matt's content, it's so very interesting. Do you have any recommendations of books to check out, and what do you think are some of the most important things to learn for someone who's wanting to learn the trade?

Ok I know I’m on the east coast and maybe I’m not looking hard enough but do 2x6 come 92 5/8 or do you have to cut each individual stud? And I’m guessing a big price difference if you have to cut each one other than just “slinging” pre cuts? Yup I’m trying to lean.
@MattBangsWood
@MattBangsWood 8 дней назад
92-1/4” pre-cut for 8’ walls. I’ve never found a single person who can explain the reason why they’re different either and it bugs me daily. 92-5/8” is part of the country, 92-1/4” for others.. If we have to precut studs it takes time, definitely wouldn’t cost the same to build a whole home that way.

I’m a mechanical and electrical quantity surveyor. We measure everything and count everything including fittings , valves , hangers, fixtures. Each item has a unit of labor associated with assembly for example a 3/4” ball valve =.40 hours , up to 2” hanger is 1 hour and a toilet installation is 2 hours . We then have a total materials and man hours to arrive at what we think is a good price . Everything is then tabulated to arrive at our cost then 15 to 30% is added .
