Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 19 | Peak fall colours means peak productivity - Notching logs off-grid

Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
In this episode, the fall foliage reaches its peak and we are blown away by the colours. The perfect weather made working outside a delight so we have been very productive. We manage to raise a couple courses of logs. We continue to tweak our notching technique ever so slightly and are slowly mastering the art of it. We also lay down, align, and screw in the rest of our temporary floor boards (OSB boards), which we have salvaged from many different places. The episode ends with us being hesitant about cutting the opening of our door into the front wall. Once we do that, there is no changing our mind about its location and our cabin layout. We will build up courage over the next week or so and in the next episode, you will see us cut the opening and install a front door frame!

Wouldn't just stacking the walls up to you get the height you want to the top of your door or window then tac a guide board up then cut down through to the bottom, that way everything comes out straight and square. Then you could lay the next log for the wall across the opening and notch up into it to complete the jam.
2 года назад
Yes that's another way of doing it. Although doing it the way we chose will save some length of logs in the end.

First timer here on your channel: First I wanna start out with some compliments then follow it up with some comments that really is only my opinion & hold no weight but something to think 🤔 about. The Cabin you guys are building is looking great and the logs you’re using is beautiful & very fine pieces of timber. They look to be Top notch nice and straight raw logs. I think you have done exceptionally well in your stripping of the bark. As well as your scribing work is exceptionally good. I think you’re doing a awesome job for a young couple and it’s gonna be a fine looking cabin when you’re finished. I amend you for doing this, because most young people nowadays are too lazy to get out and work this hard to make their dreams come true. Ok here’s what I wanted to say that is my opinion and take it with a grain of salt or however you wish. I know you wanna do it like the pioneers done their cabins. I agree with the wooden pegs to hold the logs together. But the pioneers only built their cabins with a 2 man cross cut saw & axes and primitive tools because that’s all they had available to them. The chainsaw wasn’t in existence, the smaller one man hand bowsaw like you’re using wasn’t in existence either. But I’m sure if the Pioneers would’ve had the tools & materials available to them that we do today they would’ve certainly used them. I understand your concept of wanting to do it close to the way the pioneers did. But if the pioneers would’ve had a cordless drill or a cordless screw gun I’m sure they would’ve used it. But you’re both young & if you’re muscles 💪 and backs can take that extra brutal hard labor then I say carry on using a hand crank drill. I think even Shawn James on My Self Reliance is Now using a saw mill to mill his lumber and a chainsaw and other tools in conjunction with his primitive tools. I’m a old man & I had to learn over the years of hard work that it always pays to learn to work smarter not harder. Nothing wrong with hard work it’s good for building character, but i had to learn over years of trial and error. What I learned is Time is your most valuable Thing God gives us all. The problem is none of us knows how much time God has allotted us 🤷🏼‍♂️. So now if I can do the same thing with the same results easier and faster that’s what I do. Because time once it’s gone you can’t get it back. Hey 🤷🏼‍♂️ just something to think about from an older man. Plus I’m sure if the pioneers of our past could come back and build themselves a cabin today they’d do it the same way but they’d use modern tools to save them the valuable time in their lives. Because time really isn’t on our sides. I’m not saying that at all to change your mind on how want to build your cabin. I’m simply making a point that the Pioneers built cabins That way because they didn’t have the modern tools we do today, because they weren’t invented yet. U can still build it exactly the way they did and use modern tools to help you. The bearded Carpenter builds dovetail cabins the same way they did 250 years ago. But Paul still uses chainsaw and some modern tools to help make his job much easier and faster. God bless you guys your cabin is looking awesome 😎👍
2 года назад
Hey there! Glad you found us :) I appreciate your comment and point of view, we can always learn from other people's experience. We honestly do not wish to work like pioneers, our goal is more toward working slowly, enjoying the process, learning as we go and developing skills. The cabin and the manual work we did on it kept us in shape during the pandemic when all gyms were closed. As for time, we believe the beauty of the project is in it's journey, not the destination. Therefore, we are enjoying the journey, even if it goes slowly (there's just more to enjoy !) Take care and once again, thank you for your kind words :)

Nice work. Have you considering the shrinking of the logs in the corners. Do you not have to have a shrinkingspace for the dovels. I mean that dovels vill lift up the corners when the logs shrinks and makes a gap in the corners . I have seen others leaving a space for the dovels to sink in. I just wonder. I am not critizising. Best wishes from Sweden
2 года назад
That's an excellent point, Christina! We actually haven't thought about that, none of the cabin building books we've read mentioned that. But you're probably right, it's definitely possible for the dowels to lift the logs as the logs shrink. Thanks for pointing that out, we will probably start making our dowels a little bit shorter now!

Nothing says 'log cabin' like OSB.

Haha don't worry, the OSB is just temporary during the build. The final floor will be much nicer than this

You are still hitting your chisels with a steel hammer, use the right tools, a mallet is the right thing. You can also make it yourself. It also strikes me that you don't use the whole length of the saw blade. Despite that, still doing well. 😇

Yeahhh, we really should stop destroying our chisels ! We plan on building wooden mallet during the winter, we're just trying to get as much work in as possible before the temperature stops us.

So, why no chain saw or power tools? What's wrong with being efficient? Sorry, just don't get it.

The challenge, the calm, the experience, the skills. It's all things we get from working with hand tools :) You can get that from power tools too, just depends how you look at it.

Your dowels are way to short. They are supposed to go into the lower log in the middle of it. Using wood glue would be a plus.
