Well done! Very efficient & not much waste. If I may offer 1 piece of constructive criticism. It would be that when doing a glue up. Of real wood like wulnut. Or any species of wood. It's visually best to try to match the grain. Or grain pattern if you can before the glue up. So it can have the appearance of being a solid board. Even though it is a glue up. It has a better presentation appeal to those with a keen eye. And when making classic furniture. They had big solid boards to work with. Now a days most woodworkers don't. But we have to make it appear like we do.
@shaunboydmadethis
@shaunboydmadethis 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. I definitely agree, and I always consider grain matching when joining boards together. Unfortunately, I only had the one piece of Walnut when I was making the bench, and it just didn't quite match up as nicely as I would have liked, but I had to go with what I had.

Thanks, Josh. Really appreciate it. There is definitely quite a bit of sanding on the curve portion to get all layers even. I usually start with 80 grit on the belt sander, then work up to 220 with my random orbit sander.

I saw this years ago and was reminded of it again from your latest build. I forgot that this was sans CNC work. Those repeating cuts look so much more laborious without a CNC. Think this also would almost certainly have some epoxy touch ups on some of the blemish areas if replicated now. It felt odd now not seeing that from one of your builds.

@shaunboydmadethis
@shaunboydmadethis 6 лет назад
It is 3/4" Baltic Birch Plywood. It is made completely out of layered birch veneer, so it is about as close to void-free as you can get with plywood. Only bummer is places like Home Depot and Lowes usually don't carry it, so you have to find a specialty lumber supplier.

So nice man! Might have to try something similar with my X-Carve.

Definitely! The guy next door to me has a big CNC machine and every time he sees me make something like this, he tells me to come cut it out in his shop. I enjoy the process, but it would probably save some time.

Shaun Boyd yes, it’s save a TON of time, plus you wouldn’t have that seam there. Probably waste a lot of plywood though.

Yeah, that is the main reason I made it in multiple parts, otherwise I'm not sure I could do it with one sheet of plywood. Would be fun to try a bunch of different cut patterns on the computer to see the most efficient way to do it, though.

I believe design software such as Fusion360 can calculate the sheet cutting plan automatically using the minimum amount of material, but don't take my word for it, I'm only just beginning to dabble in this area myself.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find yours and roughly how much did you pay? I've seen a few on Craigslist but they all seem to be right around $850 and I have heard people say that unless it's in pristine condition they are worth closer to $400

I actually got it from my grandfather when he moved into a smaller house, so not sure on price. Sorry, I don't have more info for you.

I first came across this video and your channel a couple years ago when I was researching laminated plywood furniture for a tv stand i built. Now im getting ready to use this technique once again to build a dog bed, and wanted to do a little more research for the video title. This video popped up again, and i had to watch it for probably the 5th time. The building technique is cool, but what really does it for me is the way you recorded this one. I love how it feels like one continuous shot and the camera just follows you around. Very inspirational!
