Dig a big pit for the water to drain to. Use the material to build up the runway. Think about large parking lots with a drainage pond.
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 2 года назад
Good call...we're doing a ditch to mine gravel lengthwise along the runway for the 1,800' strip (less distance to move the material). We will eventually end up with a big gravel pit in one of the lower spots on the property that will fill with water

Love the reality of this video. Literally EVERY project we do on property is minimum of week when thought it would be a day. Every project,no matter how much planning was involved, has dozens of costly and unexpected learning lessons. It gives me an insanely new appreciation and respect for tradesfolk. It's amazing how many interconnected variables are involved in every [seemingly] small decision. Anyway, Runway is in 5 year plan. Kudos and congrats on the rural retreat

Certainly a lot more time and $ than anticipated, but super fun and rewarding in the end!

Wow, very ambitious! I built a 2200 foot runway, crowned and with proper drainage. Rolled it flat and smooth. Big issue here was clearing the thousands of rocks out. I’m sure you will be as proud of your work as I am of mine. Makes All the work maintaining it worth it.

You could also plant Mushrooms to open up the soil structure with their mycelium roots and thus, improve drainage by opening soil pores.

What’s the plan for the surface? Dirt, gravel or turf? Would love to hear more about how you grade and the tools to make straight, if that’s a goal. Congrats on all the progress!
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
Initially, I wanted grass, but it will likely just be gravel. Easier to maintain and fix...inevitably there is always ruts, holes, etc that need fixing

Erm, just a comment. Are you having DC3s flying in? That runway looks awfully wide. Looks like you are having fun.
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 2 года назад
Haha...probably not DC-3s, but when we plow in the winter we need the width to have somewhere to put the snow. It ended up getting pretty narrow this winter with 4' tall snow berms
