From India, loved the video, and your detailed research saved our so much time. I was so confused due yo lack of knowledge about sound. U cleared all doubts. Thank u so so so much.
me at work watching this with a brand new 18i20, 4 yamaha hs8 and a subwoofer sitting in its box next to me. This is going to be fun! I wish this was my setup, tho
Thanks for the tip on speaker stands! You might want to add those to your Amazon list. I'm adding 5.1 to my music studio and have found your videos very helpful. Thanks!!
Amazing and informative video. Can you suggest me budget audio interface and monitor controller for 7.1 ? and what other equipment's do I need to make surround studio?
Great video thanks! In now time does the EVO 16 do the same as Focusrite? Im wondering how the 5.1 routing will go on EVO and no one talking about this. Thanks again
@@mattdegnan2989 Thanks for your reply! Actually after realising that I added more money to the budget and got UAD apollo x6. Powerful and have surround calibration option.
Love the video! This is what got me to get the 18i20 for my home near field setup. I’m having some issues tho getting the routing right. I’m on Mac with pro tools. Can you help?
Thanks for this info. Please, i want to set up a 5.1 for my home studio. I'm thinking of getting focal alpha Evo 65(6") for the LCR and the 5" version for my RsLs. Can this set up work? Or It's a must that the woofer inch has to be the same on all the speakers? Or is there a monitor on a budget you can recommend? Thanks
what if you have a surround sound speaker system where the speakers are no powered except the subwoofer and there is a receiver that they all plug into
You should calibrate each speaker individually to the same volume. The HS5s have slightly less powerful amps compared to the HS8s, so you'll probably need to turn them up more to get to your target calibration level.
Hey man! I purchased the Scarlett 18i20 unit for my 5.1 setup. Question: once i calibrated each speaker to 80-85 db through the Scarlett console, I couldn’t figure out the way to control the overall output level. Choosing ALL speakers resets my speakers level to zero. What would be the way to link all five speakers level to one output level fader?
i suggest use the surround device monitor control like he suggest on Monitor Control. Once you set your speaker DB and caustic, just route it to the Monitor Control.
With an Scarlett 18i20 is it possible to pass-in 5.1 audio from games and movies through the Scarlet software or does the software pass 5.1 audio from a DAW only? Currently I'm using an Antelope Discreet 8 and having to pass movie and game audio through a SoundBlaster sound card via six RCAs to get 5.1 in games and movies. With a DAW I can go directly to 5.1 through the Antelope software via its USB cord to XLR. Looking for a way to use only the audio interface (without RCA and XLR only) for all 5.1 audio whether its coming from a game, movie, or DAW... may not be possible?
The short answer is yes. I cover this in more detail in Part 2 of this video, but you can set Windows and MacOS to recognize your sound device as a 5.1 system, and games and movies that support it will output surround sound.
@@AlteraSound Hey Tall Guy! I just wanted to thank you and report back to let you know I finally got around to buying a Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen. I previously could not get my Antelope Discreet 8 Synergy interface to play back my movies and games in 5.1 surround through the Antelope interface. I literally tried "everything" under the Sun to get it to work. I previously submitted a support request to Antelope's audio engineers who told me that 5.1 playback with "their drivers" was only possible through a DAW. Today, I installed the Focusrite Control software, plugged in the Scarlett 18i20 and WOW! in just a few minutes I had all my games and movies playing through my Adam 5.1 surround system with ease! It's just unbelievable how much of a night and day difference there is driver-wise between Antelope and Focusrite. If you are reading this and you are a "Windows" user, then trust the person who fought with Antelope drivers for over two years; don't buy an Antelope interface!... buy a Focusrite instead! The Focusrite drivers just work! Thanks again Tall Guy for the video series on 5.1 surround. I learned some new things and it lead me down the path to finally getting an audio interface that actually works perfect for my DAW, movies, and gaming in 5.1 surround! I was frustrated for so long, but now I'm so excited! Good drivers make or break your audio interface!
i.e. If I want to mix 5.1/7.1 Audio in Davinci Resolve 17.4.? a couple hundred dollar Sound bar is not really sufficient? Why not if 90% of my/your audience only have/use a sound bar attached to their Living room HDTV?
U could. But itd be like mixing a billboard 100 track on airpods. Its just not suitable or professional enough. Also soundbars dont provide accurate imaging
My second video in this series goes into detail on this. If you're watching on a computer, surround sound is only supported on Windows Edge or on the Windows Store Netflix app. You'll have to configure your system as a 5.1 device in your audio control panel, then you should get surround from any content on Netflix that supports it.
