This is my little goto rig when I want to do a bit more widefield work. Let's go through putting this gear together.
In this example I'm using the 533 as my camera but you could easily replace with a DSLR OR ideally something with small pixels like the 183MC Pro.

Just a backfocus update the spacing when using a Canon EF lens here is 44mm to sensor which is achieved using the adapter shown, 55mm is the standard when using focal reducers / flatteners on telescopes but not always. :)

In the end appature is everything if the other variables stay they same Hence my 30 inch Newtonian in my back yard ;( In reality, whatever you have is so much better than the pros 40 years ago, it doesn't really matter;)

Very interesting video Ollie! And your photos are awesome....especially the shot with the Rho Oph region AND the Blue Horsehead Nebula! 👍👍 Also...Lovely background music! (I'm a jazz geek, so....👍) With that in mind, an idea: The next time you have a moonless evening with pristine skies, and you decide to do a video showing data acquisition with this wide-field set-up, perhaps you could play a bit of piano & serenade your followers with "Samyangchanted Evening" (by "Ollie & the Dew Band...in the style of Bill Evans, of course!)? 😉😁🤣

Hey Cheers Derek yes I love those broadband images too. If only I could play that Blues/Jazz music! it's funny I like to listen to it a bit but have no aptitude for playing it ! This is just a RU-vid music which I kinda liked.

Samyang/Rokinon 135mm is an amazingly sharp lens. I've used the Astrodynium ring system and an EAF. Purchased a M42 base piece to replace the bayonet connector on the lens (Just three screws to remove!) and now everything is threaded - no more slop from the bayonet connector. Some real nice pictures there Ollie! I'm just gonna be that guy that says 44mm back focus, not 55, but we all knew what you meant!
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
Sure is a great system Al and that connection system sounds good, I hear the first iteration of the ZWO bayonet adapter wasn't great but this one seems to fit solid. Good point on the backspacing I thought 🤔 I was missing something, I've pinned the correction. Cheers and clear skies Al. 👍

Nice one mate! Not sure about the smaller sensor camera as they are much more forgiving, but if pairing with something like the 2600MC it’s worth noting that it may need a small additional spacer if also using a filter (depending on thickness) to achieve the correct backspacing. (I had to add a .8mm spacer when paired with the l extreme)
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
Thanks for the tip although Ive used it with the 2600mc and didn't have any backspacing issues so appears to be ok.
@astrofisching

@@AstroSoundscape that’s good, yes it was only when I added a filter. Tho because it’s so wide field it’s very forgiving anyway 😅

Good video, I will be doing something similar with my 135/533 combo. A question though. You put an ir cut filter in, would you remove that if using an L-Pro or a duo narrowband filter? I didn’t know you could use two filters.
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
Hey Jonathan, I've always just left the IR cut filter in to be honest. I'm guessing that's no different to how it's permanently in some cameras like the 2600. Cheers Pal 👍

That's exactly the same lens I'm thinking to get one day (as many, I guess ;-) and also one of my projects for the future to combine a dedicated ZWO ASI cam and this lens. But so far I didn't know which adapter to use to connect the camera and the Samyang lens.- Is it enough to support the (quite heavy) lens? And one more question: How much is the weight of this configuration (without the mount and tripod)? Really interesting again Ollie and well made & explained video. Have a great time & clear skies mate.
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
Hey Tully I certainly recommend as a great portable rig. I find it actually supports it well, it clicks into place and seems to work fine, even had the longer 70/200 Canon on this. It's very light I'd say the whole rig part is maybe 1.5kg. :)

So the ring on the Camera is just the standard ring that comes with ASI 533 camera. If you google the camera it will show all the specs and spacing on the ZWO website. Cheers 👍

Great video! Question for you - If I'm using the Micro 4/3 version of this lens with a T2 to Micro 4/3 adapter for camera connection, can I still use the filter drawer? Will that break back focus?
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
The adapter is designed for the EF fitting but then again since you're able to move focus on your lens which works differently to a telescope I imagine it should still work but I'm not positive.
@blackice5649
@blackice5649 Год назад
Thanks for the quick response. If I can't use a filter drawer for my micro 4/3 setup - would using the IRV cut filter screwed onto the 533 be sufficient? Would the addition of a filter connected to the lens itself be an option? As you can tell I'm a bit new to all of this.
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
@@blackice5649 Yes you can certainly use a filter screwed into the middle of your 533. I pretty much have a UV/IR cut filter permanently screwed into mine, you just need the 1.25 size filter. 👍
@blackice5649
@blackice5649 Год назад
@@AstroSoundscape - sorry one more question for you. If I use a US/IR cut filter screwed into the 533 as you describe - why would I then need a filter drawer? Are there other filters beside the UV/IR cut that I should consider?
@KJRitch

I wonder if this set up would work on an AVX mount. Since the aperture is 82mm what are the pros and cons of using this system vs purchasing a 80mm refractor (SyBony 503 80mm F7 $369) other than the portability and cost. $400 USD for the 135mm lens, $70 for the Astrodymium ring system, $99 for the Nikon version ZWO filter drawer. Thanks
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape 8 месяцев назад
Hi there. Yes no reason it wouldn't work on an AVX mount. I use it on my Heq5 Pro quite often. No so much an advantage of this system but just different. At 135mm it's great for widefield astro images the scope you mention also could be good there just for slightly different purposes. Cheers.

@hael8680 Год назад
It's the first time I see a rig that does not support the lens at the front. Isn't the lens sagging as the night goes on? Those ZWO connector filter drawers are known for the "sag" they suffer. Have you measured the tilt in your sub with this setup?
@AstroSoundscape
@AstroSoundscape Год назад
Hey there - I've heard in the first versions of this adapter there were more issues. I've never had any issues of note using this setup, it's a solid connection that works well for me at least.

Hey there - Sorry I missed this. I honestly haven't owned an Askar. I think generally if it were just my first scope I'd prefer something like a little refractor with a rack and pinion focuser I can easily stick a focuser on. Down at this focal length I can only really recommend the Samyang 135 as it's the only lens I've used here. Cheers.
