Today we're building a stand for the Avid Benchtop Pro CNC router. It's made from welded 2x3" steel tubing and contains a lista cabinet for tool storage. FootMaster caster wheels make it mobile, and we'll get to useall the fabrication tools in the shop, including the belt grinder.
Drawings and 3D Model are available on Patreon: / clough42

Would you consider doing a shop tour? It has a lot of cool stuff in what looks like a decently small space. I would love to see how you set that all up.

I always keep old/dull razor blades in case i need them when welding legs on tables and such. They make for great, weldable shims that can just melt away in there like they never existed!

Put the whole coldsaw in a big cardboard box with the material running just in front of the opening. That really helps with the mess they make.

This is effective! I've actually built this exact setup installing a 4" dia suction gate at the back of clear acrylic material for the containment because my shop happened to be in a medical institution and cleanliness was not an option. And I commend you for keeping your shop as clean a you do! (helps to maintain a clearer mental capacity I also found!) CHEERS!!

I was happy to see you able to revisit the Avid CNC. I have a Onefinity Woodworker, and had looked at the Avid offerings, but the cost to Canada made it a less appealing option. I would very much enjoy future videos where you machine aluminum parts - perhaps even compare to your PM. I would be particularly interested in your assessment of the Avid's overall rigidity, but in particular the Z axis assembly, as this may be the next style of CNC router I build or buy. I have already watched many videos, but prefer your content, and value your assessments and opinions.

I almost bought one of those evolutions, but then had a wheel shatter on me from a friends I was using for some unknown reason, was so dangerous. I made some templates for 45 degree, 22.5 and 90s in different square tube dimensions and just use my plasma cutter works great, easy cleanup as you'll be grinding in some weld bevels.

Your chop saw problem: My first thought was the nylon brush used on the CNC router to help with dust collection. I thought, "naw, plastic melts". Then it dawned on me about the "old school" method, leather. The ancient bench grinder I learned on, in college 1981, had a piece of leather as the slag/chip/spark/(opps I f'd up. brass part don't stick to mag chuck. Damn kids.) catcher. My suggestion to fix the metal chop saw is to wrap some leather around the rear of the guard. I would think you would only need to go 3/4 of an inch wrap around, both sides of the rear of the guard and probably touch the base with the end of the leather. To test(prototype) I would use duct tape. If it works then drill holes in the guard, tap, make a thin piece of strap steel to wrap around the leather, bolt the strap and the leather to the guard. Think mud flap on 18 wheeler. The softness of the leather would deaden any rebounding steel chunks. Like a catchers mitt. If the leather gets caught in the blade, it will get cut and not ruin the blade. Just like your leather welding apron it is heat resistant. I would think 1/8th inch leather would be perfect. Maybe a piece off of the cuff of a used gauntlet would be about the right size.

You cannot go wrong with Lista cabinets. I bought quite a few for some of the engineering workshops I was in charge of. I looked for the thick end of 2 years here in UK for some and struck lucky, getting 4 of them 3rd hand for my own workshop. They are far easier to move if you pull the drawers right to the full open position, push in the locking tabs each side and then lift the front edge a couple of inches. They then pull off the roller rails. Trouble is you have one, you will want more, the quality just shines through.

I had a suggestion for your evolution cold cut saw. If you take either a PVC pipe end cap or a pipe pressure plug to act as stop for the bits your vacuum was missing through the center of the tubing. For the PVC end cap you can get oversized and place a neodymium magnet on the inside to placement and removal fast and seamless. Not perfect hands free but when you’re prepping the tube to be cut, 1 extra step to keep the shop clean kinda worth considering.

If you want to improve your welding, just pay attention to the puddle. I can tell by how you are moving the mig gun around that you are not paying attention to what the puddle is doing, you are just moving it around randomly. Just relax and focus on the puddle, your welding will greatly improve once you get this figured out. Thanks for all the great content. Cheers

Starter/pilot bits work out great for some insert sizes like 5/16", 3/8", and 1/2" and stay on target more reliably for every hole. Easier to prevent content maker's wander than unpiloted high speed bits with their wide margins. In a million years or so when the first camera holder arm and digits show up where a nipple used to be the camera hand evolution will be under way and two handed drilling can be restored.

My concern with using the Evolution miter saw, or one simular, is that the discharge of metal filings would find themselves on my concrete driveway that any rain or humidity would cause permanent rust stains on the concrete surface. I'd use a blower to sweep off those filings quickly to avoid the same. Currently I'm very pleased with my HF horizontal band saw. Captures all filings and has a coolant feature. Thank you for great videos James.

On 1/8” material, you don’t really need a gap. Project turned out very nice. Lista is really expensive. For centering on corners, I keep several different size angle cutoffs. Just clean them up and place at the corner. I make sure the inside corner is sharp, not rounded.

I tried the same on my new makita 1230 last week, same result. My conclusion is that a higher airflow would help, so i will give it a new try with our wood dust collector that uses a 4" hose and can move a lot of air in a large surface. Not too concerned about the sparks since i use a 30 feet hose.

for less pull on tacks, you can try reducing the size of the tack. Turn the machine up and short trigger pull. You want to get the root tacked, not the walls of the two tubes you're joining. Practice on some scrap, it gets easier with practice. Knocking off the mill scale also helps with shortening the tack time

I have an Avid benchtop pro and it’s currently sitting on a 4’x8’ bench 2” thick maple top with steel legs and when the gantry moves on the Y axis the bench was rocking. I had to use a bracket to attach it to a wall. Personally, I wouldn’t operate the cnc on such a small base without bolting it to the studs of a wall. You will see that when the gantry does rapids in the Y axis, it’s a lot of mass that accelerates and decelerates quickly . This can cause the base to rock or even tip over if it’s not attached to something solid.
@Clough42
@Clough42 8 месяцев назад
Pretty sure several hundred pounds of tools in a cabinet in the welded steel base with the contact pads lowered will handle it. If not, I guess I'll learn something.
@Pintosonic
@Pintosonic 8 месяцев назад
@@Clough42 I’m using the Avid CNC electronics package and the default settings for the rapids is quite fast and the first time I ran a program, I was shocked how the accelerations and decelerations were abrupt. The problem is not the solidity of the bench, mine has over 1200 pounds capacity. The problem is having a mass over 100 pounds above the center of gravity that can accelerate and decelerate rapidly. This puts a lot of lateral load on the bench and having a small base will not be an advantage. But since you are using servo motors instead of stepper motors you might not see the same problem.

I wish I had a fixture table/space for it.. I was welding a similar shape and got a potato chip even if I tried to follow sequencing recommendations. By the way I noticed you welded the inside seams second, most of the videos I have seen they recommend to do that last because it has the highest leverage on pulling it out of square, I guess that with a fixture table is way less impactful on the final result.

Mightn't it be better to fix the router frame to the stand to get the benefit of that mass to dampen vibration and strengthen the router frame? When your legs are not quite square after the tacks, you can sometimes use additional stitches to pull it into position using the same principle that got it out of place in the first place.

Have you considered an enclosure that will work with your design yet? Nice stand - I built something along the same lines for my Avid machine but quickly learned that if you start making aluminum parts, you are desperately going to want an enclosure. It is going to completely cover your entire shop with aluminum chips. I subsequently built an enclosure for mine, and now that it is complete.. feel the need to start all over based off of what I learned in the process. I am very much looking forward to your tramming video and am open to trading notes here - I struggled with that quite a bit.

Just recently I made a similar one but with Aluminum profiles which cost around 250$ (but no cutting was necessary of course, and the parts were delivered for free to our place - there's an aluminum company which does that in our town, they deliver parts to their customers for free every morning).

Oof. Kneeling on concrete with no knee pads. I picked up some cheap $10 ones from HF for working on my car, and it makes it so much more pleasant. Maybe your knees are tougher than mine. 😅

Some machinists/machinist wives find it therapeutic to pick metal splinters out of their hands. Maybe he or his wife has a thing for the knees😁

As I did see you are using the Evolution Saw did you ever think about cutting stainless with it? I'm right now looking for something with which I can cut Stainless that doesn't instantly wear out. So the options are bandsaw or something like a metal circular saw. I need the cuts pretty clean.. My thinking is that I probably should go with the bandsaw. I already own one but it's a cheap lidl one where the chuck isn't really nice and also the orienting mechanism isn't that nice.

So, silly question. Did you ever intend to paint that?

Those casters looks great, but are they really $75ish a pop? They seem like they'd work well for a workbench I'm building, but I may try the cheap Amazon imitations first, hopefully it's not a buy once cry one lesson.

I saw a guy tacking things in the center of square tube instead of the corners. I tried it and it doesn't pull like in the corners.

Should be a link in the description. I haven't had much success in other applications, but hand drilling tube works great.
