In this latest episode #33 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac shows the tiny milking barn he built and outfitted for milking his cow. If you need a small livestock shed or barn for your small farm or homestead, the one shown here is a great solution...and can make the tedious daily chore of miking your cow or goat more pleasant! For even more details on how to construct a barn like this, check out these other episodes:
"Building a Simple Shed" ( • Building a Simple Shed... )
"Building a Tiny Barn" ( • Building a Tiny Barn -... )
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandsco... to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books (like Pa Mac's "Building an Old-fashioned Pole Barn") or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandsco...)

My grandma got knocked down by lightning when she went to drive the cows home. she was okay. Normally the cows came home themselves, but some days they would cross a creek, find new grass, and keep eating. They would march obediently into straight stalls. We didnt have stanchions.

To keep 'em from accidentally knockin' the milk bucket over when they raise and lower their back legs at flies.

Love your videos. How do you know how wide to make the space between center board and end board to hold the cow’s head
@farmhandscompanion
@farmhandscompanion 2 года назад
My adult cows' necks are about 7 inches wide (their heads are much wider). So at the bottom of both boards I make sure the distance is no greater than 7 inches; and at the top the "stop nail" can be driven so that the width can end up bein' a bit less than 7 inches. The chain that's used to fasten the stanchion becomes an "adjustable" device. If you have a fatter cow neck, just use the chain links that make the opening a tad wider. If you have a smaller cow, heifer, or even a calf, you can fasten the chain so that the board goes all the way to the stop nail.

I really like to see the projects you're doing and been watching for quite a while but do not like the text over video format. I'd rather hear you narrate what you're doing. Heres why. I'm watching the video to pay attention to what you're doing, then I get distracted by the text, telling another important piece of information. Then I have to pause or rewind to catch it all. At the same time, my audio sense is being wasted on music instead of being able to absorb the audio and visual simultaneously. Like I said, I really like your projects but it makes to difficult to take in 2 visual parts at that same time. Thanks for sharing your work.

I'm collecting materials to make a tiny milking barn. I will be using your design with a wall where the cow feed trough is to keep her head out of the rain. My current milking station is 4'x8' just four posts with a tin roof. The cow stays dry, but not me. Thanks for the inspiration.
