Great video. Pro tip. If you use Sound Reactive WLED with an ESP32, you'll have 2D / matrix support without needing to set up a bunch of segments, throw in a digital microphone and you''ll have some really awesome sound reactive animations.

Awesome video, loved the humour. Ps, I wouldn't solder with the power running, if the led power supply is not properly grounded ( the "low voltage" ground may not be referenced to earth) you are likely to get RCD trips with residual current going between the soldering iron and the power supply. I learnt this the hard way :) (RCD trip after I blew a poorly designed power supply).

You had me at that bad ass halo, I've been watching all these videos, trying not to plan them all. I just thought it would be cool to find addressable rgb strip and the light controller and wire them for the halo. And while this project is unrelated it all clicked in my head while watching this. Thank you, for being inspiring.

You can install a program called xlights on your pc or mac and use the WLED as a lightshow is simple as adding the devices ip address to xlights and allowing WLED to recieve E1.31 or DDP protocols on the wifi.

What a great video...thanks! I'm thinking of putting something like this on a fence to make a Christmas display. After the lights are strung/hung on the fence, the resulting "panel" would be 75' long and 4' tall with approximately 200 columns and 15 lights per column. The part that I'm confused about is how to program them. When they're all strung/hung on the fence, will I essentially treat them as a matrix that's, roughly, 200 columns with 15 lights per column?

Awesome project and video, surprised you didn't use a drill on the ping-pong balls. To avoid taping and painting use plastic wire conduit then drill holes center, left or right for the LEDS.
@Zibartas
@Zibartas 3 года назад
Melting displaces the plastic and makes a nice sturdy lip for the ping pong ball to grab onto the LED (look up friction drilling if you care). Drilling such thin objects would be like drilling a sheet of paper... The drill would bite into them and rip them apart, or have the ball helicopter up the drill flutes and pierce it on both sides :) As for painting - this was tedious but a simple step, I didn't wanna overthink it and went with a foolproof method :D

How many pixels can the ESP8266 run if power management is done correctly? My plan is running (3) 5 meter WS2812b (either 30 or 60 pixels/meter haven’t decided) yet and running (2) 200 watt power supply split in the middle sharing only the ground (and data of course). Is that something I can do or will I need to do something different?

Superb! How are the balls attached? Super glue? or might you need access if an led needs replacing? I would want this in my ceiling, so I would need to attach them in some way. Another thought is using corrugated plastic sheets for light diffusion. Essentially covering the entire wall with it, creating a false panel. Certainly more pricey than balls, but I think it would look more professional? Or at least a different style of lighting because you dont see the wires and the individual lights are further diffused. I really have no experience with this, just throwing out thoughts. Damn the ideas could keep going. Installing sensors that respond the body's movement, making it interactive when you wave your arms or however those work... I believe those sensors are a thing.
@Zibartas
@Zibartas 4 года назад
They're just pressure-fit - holes snug enough to not need any glue, but i guess something like hotglue wouldn't hurt. Those are great ideas - but I didn't have enough LEDs to make it as dense as a stadium screen or something would be - so I kinda went with this organic look that let me get away with lower LED count. And yeah you could probably hack an Xbox Kinect to generate an image ;)
