Building an Electric Guitar From REAL AXES!

I built a real working electric guitar from axes! Presenting The AXE AXE Guitar! Guitars are frequently called Axes, so I thought that it should be an actual axe as well.
Two old Kelly axes were joined together to make a custom double bit axe. Double bit axes are very hard to find over here in Australia. The handle and neck was made from a single piece of solid Spotted Gum hardwood. With Huon Pine accents and wedge. Two humbucker pickups, 3 way pickup selector switch and a single volume & tone knob.
Just to note, I am no awesome guitar player, maybe one day I can play better! Still looking for someone to shred it up on the Axe Axe Guitar!
Enjoy the build! Please like & subscribe!

So instead of smashing the guitar after a performance, you can smash up the stage. Got it.

I admit that was\is a work of art.. As a metal worker, auto body, welder, fitter, really impressed with book matching and simplicity instead of a overwhelming cheap dollar store tool... Loved the natural "handle" body, gold hardware pops but clean not flashy... As a guitarist the Chiquita travel "Back to The Future" style is cool as Hell! I would have to adjust my position but I love it

Wow! This thing is a beautiful work of art man! The only thing I would suggest is the addition of a truss rod. I’m not sure how hard this wood is though, it may not even be necessary. Do you still have it? Has the neck of it stayed true over the years?

Would of been cool if you had more of a break angle on headstock for better tuning, and a Truss rod fitted into neck to help with temp changes, all in all still very impressed with your axe

Incredible work dude. So impressive. I'm not a guitar player so would you mind telling me how the weight compares to a typical guitar? Is it possible to play this for extended periods or is it more of a functional work of art?
@WillMatthews
@WillMatthews 3 года назад
Thanks mate! I'd say it's probably a little bit heavier then a normal guitar, but not too much. It is possible to play for an extended period of time, which was my goal. Obviously a bit more unusual to play then a normal guitar, but once you get used to it it's all good really 👍 a functional work of art too!

@WillMatthews 3 года назад
Difficult to make it work with this design so I didn't bother. Plus I saw a bloke making pine necks and bodies, all solid with no truss rod. And they didn't warp even after decades 👍
@williamsacksteder9438
@williamsacksteder9438 3 года назад
@@WillMatthews Fair enough. I can't imagine any way that doesn't involve a multiple piece neck myself. I would bet routing a channel and gluing a fretboard on top would be child's play for you if you chose to, though it would certainly lose the effect of the monolithic hunk of wood like a traditional axe handle though. I guess that's a fair trade. Great build. Really cool concept!
@GianmarioScotti

@@WillMatthews my experience (with basses) is that the change in air humidity between season or between places on earth, is much more critical than the tension of the strings, for warping.

I know this video is 2 yrs old, even if it was 20, I have to express my admiration for the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The likes I haven't seen since I was a child back in the 50s watching my German grandfather hand making old European furniture with the "Claw & Ball" feet and the hidden mortise & tendon joints, to this day haven't loosened up on the dinning room chairs. They are just as tight as the day they were made. I normally watch a whole build, because I skip ahead. But this had my full attention! I used to build cigar box guitars and have seen some pretty crazy shit made into guitars(5gallon jugs for a bass, 2x4 steel guitar, even an old pressure cooker given a new life as a sitar)but this is off the charts awesome! But I do have one question, do you have to retune after splinting wood?😂
@JoesExpressLLC

There is 1 fatal flaw in your build. You should have had a separate fretboard instead of carving it from the neck blank. You're missing 1 vital piece the TRUSS ROD

The quality of the woodworking on display here won my sub. I often feel inspired to attempt the craft when I watch the professional luthiers who constantly show up in my feed. I’d probably make my own share of silly mistakes tbh. You didn’t include a truss rod in the neck my dude! Over the life of the guitar, the string tension will gradually bend the neck forward. The action will get high and uneven before one day, you go to tune the instrument and (assuming it hasn’t already become unplayable) the neck will snap. A truss rod provides counter tension to prevent this from happening.
@nicholasbstone
@nicholasbstone Год назад
Actually, you're mistaken about the function and purpose of the truss rod. The truss rod is NOT a factor in the strength of a guitar's neck or it's ability to withstand string tension. The truss rod is there to allow adjustment to the neck, in order to have proper neck relief. "Neck relief" is an essential factor in proper guitar setup. Even still, guitars in the classical period were built without truss rods for generations. This particular "axe" was built from an extremely dense hardwood according to the video description as well as being of a substantial girth. I also noticed that he used a set of light gauge (9-46) strings, so I seriously doubt the neck will ever snap due to string tension.

I absolutely LOVE the concept. The guitar itself has a sound that belongs to that guitar, the only way I can describe it is that it sounds like you welded 2 axe heads together, which is basically what you did. It doesn't sound bad, it's just not something I would want in my guitar collection unless it was given to me as a gift. Even then I don't think I'd play it more than once because it looks like it would be awkward to hold. It LOOKS bad ass though and you get a 10 for style points

Great!!! you had a really cool idea. You should get your patent and start a brand of guitars made like this. In a ranking of guitars, yours is the most METAL in the world. 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟 I'm convinced that the major Death, Black, Viking metal bands would fight to buy a show-stopping guitar like yours. The controls are certainly well shielded inside a Faraday cage....the most robust in the world of guitars.... I think the weight is quite unbalanced on the bridge part (I know axes: I live in the mountains), for the rest: VERY BEAUTIFUL, also excellent in the choice of colors and I really like that you left the axes without paint! I imagine the side of the double blade, in the part without the controls, a little sharper, and after a guitar solo it is planted on a log placed on the stage: the fans would go crazy. You are an exceptional craftsman and artist.👍👍👍👍👍👍 In your place I would try to build one with 8 strings and propose it to a famous metal band for a lot of money!!!
