120' of pipe and picket rail for a new PopShelf store in Albermarle North Carolina. We had less than a week from the time we quoted to the time we had to install. The concrete wasn't even close to being cured. They poured Wednesday and we installed rails on Thursday . Little to close for me as we prefer the concrete has time to set up.

Always nice to have a Home Depot or lowes nearby!!

Absolutely makes it easier. we try to take everything with us especially when we’re 2 hours from the shop but inevitably we forget something.

@@MattcoMetalWorks ya That happens with our crew all the time. We spend lots of time thinking about what we need to take with us for the install but always seem to forget some important tool. 😂

I bought the SteelMax chop saw and love it. Accurate straight and miter cuts with no blade drift like you get wit the abrasive saw
@MattcoMetalWorks
@MattcoMetalWorks 2 года назад
That’s exactly why I won’t get another dewalt chop saw. I’ve had one and the blades move way too much. I’ll check on the steelmax Thanks for the info.

@@MattcoMetalWorks The other huge plus is you can take a blades width off if you need to just like a woodworking chop saw. Nice work on those railings by the way!

The Evolutions are good saws and if you establish an account with them sometimes they will send you an email with a BOGO deal for blades . We use the 15” but a 14” will also work on the saw . We built and installed a set like that at a group home also in green concrete to meet government guidelines. First hole we drilled broke off the corner of the ramp . We were able to patch it but stayed drawn up for the remainder

Yea evolution is what I’ve been eyeing. We have an evolution mag drill and love it. Yes we too had some small issues with concrete wanting to crack. It was absolutely not the right time to install the rails but we literally finished at 2 and the inspector was walked around the corner at 2:15. Fire Marshall was there when we pulled out at 3:30. I assume they were opening the next day.

Sounds exactly like the job that we had . My shop is in NE Alabama and the job was in NW Georgia. The inspectors, Fire Marshals, etc are a little more strict . They let us Liquid Nail and concrete patch the corner . A relief. We pretty much share the same scope of work . We have an Evolution chop and hand held saws as well as a mag drill . Had a few issues but were easily able to get parts from them

If your using a metal blade they are great but blade is wider (and costs alot more), you can get a base for your portaband to turn it into a bandsaw or Eastwood sells a portable bandsaw same concept with a metal blade your not throwing sparks customers like that and it allows you to use anytime of year. Upfront costs is 3-400 but some chop saws are 200-300 anyways. Nice work btw!

Great idea. I’ve thought about having a normal small bandsaw to use for onsite work but I would need an enclosed trailer etc and as you can see I couldn’t haul 23’ long rails and a tool trailer. I’ll definitely check those out though. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching too. Have a great weekend

@@MattcoMetalWorks why not a little jobsite box for the back of the vehicle? I use a Dewalt roll around toolbox it costs $90 at home depot it holds grinders consumables and other tools/gear its huge and an easy add on just heavy when loaded lol

@@michaelschulz4317 yep we actually use a large plastic roll around to carry out little mig welder. I think I got it from Home Depot also.

You guys did a great job on the build and install. What are you charging per/ft for standard railing like this now days? I’ve got a welding business myself in Ky. I normally get between $175-200 per/ft for that style railing. I always feel like even that’s not enough though. I’d like to go up on my price but don’t wanna price myself outta work.
@MattcoMetalWorks
@MattcoMetalWorks 2 года назад
Thanks a lot it turned out pretty good. I definitely need to go up on pricing if that’s the case. I don’t remember exactly what this job was but not enough apparently. Most of the time we’re around $100-$125 per ft then commercial like these is alittle more plus travel etc.

@@MattcoMetalWorks thanks for responding. I know money is a touchy subject for a lot of ppl and rightfully so. So I appreciate you sharing that info with me. I’ve been binge watching your channel now that I’ve discovered it lol. Maybe in a future video you could go into depth on your bid process and markup/margins? I work alone (1200sqft) and been self employed since 2017. So I’m still learning and trying to maximize my profit. I like networking with other small business owners. It really beneficial for everyone.

Did you plan to put a post at every joint ... or just that lucky? Love my evolution saw! Get one with the cast base, not the stamped steel.
