I have had the pleasure of making the 14 hour drive to the Tennessee Classic on two occasions. It becomes THE "brain trust" of primitive archery for that week. With a little gumption and measure of effort, you can show up with zero experience and go home with a bow made by your own hands. Materials are on hand, tools are available, and most importantly many of the world's best bowyers are there and sharing their hard won experience! You are only a stranger there until you make your first acquaintance, and then you are part of the family! Thanks for putting up a great video of a phenomenal event, Clay.

Cool video I was a member there for a long time. Great bunch of guys. That’s a long drive from Idaho. Lived in Mtn. Home for about four years. Beautiful state except for X wife. Your videos are very helpful to a lot of people. I sty can’t get those single bevels sharp. Take care.
I actually watched your 4 part video on how to make a board bow. First one was a success, so I was watching some of your other videos. upon watching this one I noticed some things in the backround. The targets that you were shooting at. I am 100% positive that they came from where I work. since I pulled and pack that set of animals. p.s. I have photos of me next to the buffalo that was being shot at. Keep up the great work and thanks for helping me build a bow that got me into making my own.
Gosh, seeing these beautiful green forests makes me wish spring to hurry up! :D Awesome video. And Clay, I would really like to see you build a crossbow with a wooden prod/bow. It doesn't have to be super powerful or something. I just love building crossbows But I would never use a steel bow because there is no "life" in it. A wooden prod has so much more character and if done properly it shoots fast, without being too powerful lbs-wise.
I shout a lot of 3D the first year before I hunted with a bow we whonted a lot of practice before shooting at a live animal opening day I harvested a 5+5 Rosavelt it took me 7 hrs to find an take him down .

Hello! I love traditional archery and am interested in a club. I was told about this event where you can build your own bow and possibly arrows too if I remember correctly? I don’t see many women in the video; do they come to events like these? I’m from Texas and there were some women in the sport but not many. I would love to build my own and am wondering how to get more information!
Hi Madison, there are a few women but it’s dominated by men. But don’t let that disused you. Folks at these events are very helpful. You might also check out the Oklahoma Selfbow Jamboree near Perkins Oklahoma each spring.

Was this last year? I’m in the Tennessee mountains near Asheville NC, our leaves aren’t out yet and the wild turkeys that come to my backyard feeder have just started to strut but I haven’t heard one gobble yet. I know Nashville is a lot lower in altitude.

My question is, since this is traditional bow making, I don't see any people with American or north american Indian interested or participating in this events. Why?, They are the ones who made these kind of bows , I hope I am not mistaken.
I recently made a bow from a aspen tree. It was easy to carve, and it turned into a 40lb bow. I like it for a 1st bow. It might not last long though as it is retaining shape. I want to use the buckthorn tree next. Has anyone had experience with either of these trees for making bows? Is there any other nuisance trees that grow like weeds that are good for bows. I live in North Dakota/Minnesota.
@@clayhayeshunter Buckthorn is a invasive hedge row tree from Europe that seems to take over the woods. Some grow straight, most don't. It seems like hard wood when dried out. It has black berries, oval pointed leaves, and long thorns all over. It has a red/orange heart wood. I'll look for Hawthorne I know we have it. Thanks

Thumbnail looks different. You have ink sleeves, shirt is different, and the fletching is some weird spiral thing. Unless that was some pretty decent Photoshop id say the algorythims are a little off. How long do you think it took you to bust out that recurve? Ive tried to make a bow in a day but they get collapse marks on the belly. Mostlikely cause if tillering if I'm in a hurry I tend to over stress and end up with a light bow thats taken set. Kinda sucks to be honest. Hope all is well. Mubb.
Clay what Kind of life can you expect to get from an Osage self bow? I am sure it varies, and there are lot of variables but best case scenario...generally speaking for an average shooter shoots all year but increases summer to fall...
