When it comes to shooting a traditional bow accuratly, whether it be a modern recurve or longbow or a primitive selfbow, confidence in your shooting is absolutely critical. You need to know that you can shoot your bow accurately and consistently and you should expect to hit your target with each shot. If you're HOPING to put your arrow where you're looking then you've already lost the battle.
This video will show you a few techniques that will help you tighten your arrow groups and improve both your accuracy and confidence in shooting.
This is a little more advance shooting video so if you need instructions on the fundamentals of archery, including archery form, back tension, how to aim a recurve bow, etc, you should check out my video on How to shoot a Recurve Bow. It's one of the best tutorials on how to shoot a bow and arrow on the Tube. • Traditional Archery Ti...
This video will show you how to ensure that you are coming to the same draw length with every shot. It will show you the use of both a clicker and building arrows to length. It will show you how to standardize your head position and anchor by utilizing a string knock as a temporary sight. And it will give you tips for leaning to aim a recurve or longbow.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: bowhunting, archery, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

I haven't picked up my recurve or hunted with it in 50 years, but I'm retired now and have the time to re-learn my skills. I went looking on line for a "refresher course" and found this tutorial. Like all your efforts, it's EXCELLENT. Everything you recommend reminded me of the techniques I formerly used. Thanks so much, Clay, and keep up the great work.

Excellent tips! You have addressed every issue that I am having with my consistency and more so. You gave me the answer to 'what is it I am doing wrong?' Like working on a car, wrenching and fixing is relatively easy, the diagnosis of what is causing the problem is hard. Thanks man! You are truly exceptional in the way you teach archery!

Great tips, Clay. I suspect the most useful to me will be putting my target dead vertical. I've got mine leaning back a bit and I bet it will make a big difference if I straighten it up! Thanks again.

Good tip from Adam Fox and good reminder for me especially since I'm a rookie at archery. That's what I did when I was trying myself at diabolo and other forms of juggling. Was amazed about the ''magical'' improvement every time I would come back at itat how I ''magically'' improved next time I picked it up.

Mr. Hayes , your passion and the knowledge that you are sharing got me back to shooting a bow. I've learnt a lot listening to you teaching your sons about expectations and the important of patience in a hunt. Hopefully, if God is willing, one day in the near future, i will be able to hunt with it responsibly. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. May the Lord bless you and your family with a year full of grace.

This is a great video! Been shooting trad since 86 which is last time I shot a compound. A few simple truths, must build form with a light, light bow (30# or less) and stretch bands. If you can’t hold at anchor comfortably for 20 seconds, you need a lighter bow. Must separate aiming from your release either with a clicker or other conscious methods. Instinctive and Gap are brothers from the same mother. Shooting trad is a lifelong adventure.

So appreciated your instruction. I've watch videos looking to get better on a recurve and they had good intentions but something I've learned about teaching. You can be good or the best at something but if you don't have the ability to convey what you know then your not a good teacher. In this video I had some questions answered. Thanks for that. I shoot a compound but recurve or long bow was different. I was all over the target. Having an aiming reference eluded me.

Hi Clay! I just started to change from spilfinger to 3 under, it took me 3 days to configure the string nock height, and the brace height. My bow is a bit too strong, so I have to do some more muscle exercise, to have a relaxed release. But as you explain in many videos, and specially in this is perfect.., it works fantastic to shoot on a line...... I use to shoot on small bit of tejp or a small piece of paper, and that works fine, but on a big normal target paper its harder to find a spot to focus on. Im shooting Bamboo arrows since 2 years back, and they are really fantastic with my Longbow. Thanks for a good video(again)!

My anchor point is my ear and my head alignment is straight down my arrow shaft. I have tried for years using the point of my arrow to sight but was very unsuccessful at it. Now out 25 yards I look at my target and it’s right on, and have learned how to position my head to be consistent at 30. Now working on 35 and 40. I love your tips and knowledge. I learn lots and love the fact that in traditional archery it’s very individual.

what has help me the most is when I'm shooting and say been shooting for a bit when i notice i might be getting tired if i get 3-10 good shots i just put the bow down. Now this I have learned from over shooting then almost learning bad form from getting frustrated. It was hard to learn at first but it has helped me a lot.

Good morning Clay. I come from a family of compound bow shooters and I am constantly picked on from my older brother my dad and my younger brother for shooting traditional. I do have three compounds that have sights but there is something about traditional that I enjoy so much more. I have yet to harvest my first deer but I have had several shots. I just keep forgetting to aim low because every dear I have shot at has ducked the string and I just leave the woods empty-handed. I really enjoy your videos they keep me motivated and keep me striving to become a better shot. I have five recurves and one longbow and I refuse to give up. I am 51 years old and yes I probably started a little late but I have been doing this now for 3 years. I do appreciate all of your encouragement and all of your good videos keep them coming brother and I will keep watching. God bless you and your family and have a Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year.

Yep, perfectly normal. My first two seasons of bow hunting were unsuccessful. At least a dozen misses, with every shot high. I screw things up, consistently. Thankfully they were all clean misses and I didn't wound anything. I almost gave up and went back to the gun. Very happy I didn't quit. Keep at it! You'll find what works for you!!

vaporTrail my uncle has been hunting with his recurve for the last 30 years. Doesn't use tree stands because his friend got paralyzed falling out of one. He just still hunts. He's had his fair share of misses but has also gotten 3 nice bucks with his Herters, one made it in the Pope & Young book. He always tells me I'm going to shoot right over their backs. He doesnt gap shoot so he says wait until they get really close and then shoot low behind the front leg. That was his biggest tip of advice. Get close and shoot low. Him and his buddies all shoot recurves and it seems that when somebody at camp misses, they shot high.

It's true about leaving it alone when you get tired and start missing the target. As another archery and yourself pointed out. Put the bow down and walk away. You'll only make yourself more frustrated because your aim has gone to pieces. A tired aim is an inaccurate aim. Thankyou for your informative video.

What is your favorite draw weight for hunting and what is your draw length. I have found that with self bows the lighter the weight the less string follow I seem to get. What is the optimum weight for a self bow like you make so far as string follow and adaptability in hunting situations. I tend to stick around 60 to 65 pounds. Would I be better off dropping to, say, 55.

I have shot with a bow and I find if you did not or do not want to have the arrow tip to touch the knuckle, a thing I have seen is one using a perment marker replacing as or if needed line done straight or piece of tape with a little bit of glue on the tape to hold it on more for a perfect draw. I have seen this line also sets a spot to not go past, trust me I once used the line of perment marker due to hating how the touch is to me.
