Lesson 3 in the video series on building automation systems. BAS 101 training class or building automation system basics. As I go through what is a BAS, a general overview, some basic terminology, and different types of controls.
This lesson gets into the BAS training simulator purchased from DDC Support services (now iConnect). I've utilized some of the training material supplied with their system - www.DDCsupportservices.com (NOW www.iconnecttraining.com)
From the website:
The PT-181 is a portable training unit specifically designed for the DDC (Direct Digital Controls) industry. It is packaged with curriculum that is both embedded in the Trainer and contained in a written workbook resulting in a highly interactive student - trainer experience. The PT-181 incorporates some of the most popular DDC devices currently in use. The web-enabled DDC controller allows the student to access the Trainer using a standard web browser and HTML5 or JAVA WebStart®. All of the DDC devices are interfaced with the main controller via hardwired or network connections. BACnet IP (Ethernet) and MS/TP (RS485 serial) networks are utilized allowing the student to gain exposure to the most popular BAS networks in use. The PT-181s can be operated stand alone or easily networked together for use in a learning center environment. Onboard temperature, CO2, humidity, and motion sensors are included. Graphical object oriented programming is presented using the Niagara N4 Framework®

I wish I watched these videos before. I'm Currently a College student, thinking about working in controls in the future, and these are very helpful to get an idea of what I'm getting into.

These are really great videos. Could you break down other product lines and how they might be better or worse than others given what a customer wants? Maybe from a customers point of view what are the places where they could spend more money and get more benefit?

Hi Matt , What is the difference between RTU, FCU and CO2/Temp sensor's temp control ? Are they all in different rooms ? Otherwise, same Zone will have multiple controls. I'm trying to understand the hypothetically deployed physical HVAC architecture corresponding to the training box. Thanks
@edunewton1386

Hi, I think from Matt's demonstration using the Jace box, we are looking at simulating a Single Zone VAV system. RTU: Rooftop units are packaged unit capable of supplying air to a space at a set temperature. FCU, does the same thing, however FCU is smaller and are installed in ceiling or inside a building not outside. CO2, are usually installed in return air ducts to detect the amount of CO2 level in a level. These systems could be found and installed in a single zone and connected to the JACE box (BAS)for monitoring and control. Thanks Newton

Patrick Jones yeah this would be an awesome tool to have. I’m trying to get into Building Automation. I’m sure this unit has an astronomical price tag. I may have to just build my own at some point.

not nearly as dangerous as other jobs.. All the work is low voltage and you could lock out equipment before working on it

Cheeky you, using 69. Anyways, Jace is so useful! Universities should have a set or room that people can register for to experiment.
