As Japanese, I’m happy to see a foreigner enjoying building Japanese kits. Actually I was surprised that there were such a lot of people who loved Yamato. Thanks a lot.

The weathering makes sense in the lore. Space ships in this universe spend much of their time submerged underwater. As that is where they are stored when being overhauled, decommissioned, or just plain laid up between wars. New ships are also symbolically launched into the sea before immediately being launched into space.

In a nutshell, what Space Battleship Yamato is -- The original 1973-1974 anime TV series was a genre-defining, epoch-making show. As far as sci-fi/mech/space opera series in Japan go, probably only Gundam is more popular. I think Yamato (at least my impression) trades off second-place with Macross in popularity. It eventually made it to the West in an edited, redubbed version popularly known as "Starblazers." It's considered part of the Second Wave anime explosion (along with "Battle of the Planets," the original Western dub of "Gatchaman"). In Japan, the show was popular enough to inspire a series of motion pictures that ran well into the 1980s and at least two more TV seasons, the second of which is considered the best of the series' run (and was itself a MAJOR rewrite of the second Yamato theatrical movie), the third season of which is considered pooh in Japan and the West, dub or no dub. Most of the Yamato merchandise has never made it to the West -- this includes many videogames and more than a few original manga, anime OVA spin-offs, and the vast majority of the model kits. Yamato 2199 is a REVAMP, relaunch of the Space Battleship Yamato brand. Relaunches have been attempted several times but have never quite succeeded in the past.... they've done these with brand-new casts set in new continuities or far into the future, OR they've been continuing the original series through newer movies/OVAs with surviving members of the original 1970s voice cast. Yamato 2199 is mostly redesigned... Only the female characters and the Yamato itself really reflect the original series. Some specific subplots of the main storyline were tinkered with but it mostly follows the original 1973-1974 series which has STILL never been released unedited, video and audio restored in the West! There was an attempt to sell Yamato 2199 as Starblazers 2199 in the West but it was botched. Four out of six planned DVD/Blu ray volumes were sold online before the effort was cancelled. The series just wasn't selling well enough to finish it and the US release was critically panned... It was sold through the company that's had to the Western video license to the original Yamato theatrical films and Starblazers for the better part of 20 years at least...
@modelchili

Very informative, thanks for that!

You're welcome! That's the little bit I know about Yamato myself. Yes, the show was named after the famous SUPER Battleship that was sunk in World War II. IJN Yamato was the largest battleship ever built but NOT invulnerable. Like its sister ships, it passed into legend... It was only in the early 1980s that the wreck was discovered by a Japanese research group. Its sister ship, Musashi, was discovered a few years ago by a group funded by Paul Allen I believe. The third ship, Shinano -- which was modified into an aircraft carrier, has not been rediscovered -- yet. They have a general idea of where it sank but when the ocean gets to at least 20,000 feet depth in places, it's like looking for a needle within a haystack within a haystack. You really can't rely on the coordinates recorded during battle -- they're a starting point, not an absolute. There are many, many wrecks from World War II that have to be rediscovered. It all takes time, money, and a lot of good research... It helps when they have legends and great general interest surrounding them like the wreck of the Titanic did. Even then, technology had to catch up before that liner was rediscovered... The Yamato has quite a legend itself in Japan and is probably the most famous and beloved fighting ship in Japanese history. The name is to Japan what the Enterprise (CV-6 and later CVN-65) is to the US Navy... I have seen BOTH of the dubs of the first two seasons of Space Battleship Yamato a long, long time ago. I saw them back in 1991 or 1992. I saw a little bit of the third season, called "The Bolar Wars" in the US, but wasn't impressed. It was pretty forgettable! I HAVE all (six of?) the original Yamato theatrical films through Final Yamato subtitled on DVD (Voyager Communications release, officially authorized) but have not watched them yet. I have read Final Yamato, the final film in the original series, has or had the record for being the longest anime feature on record... which is NOT a good thing! Japanese films have a reputation for having very deliberate (re: SLOW) pacing. I have seen bits and pieces of Yamato 2199 online and it seems decent to me but it's something that I probably would have to sit down and watch over a few days and NOT weeks. It's that type of show. If you want to own whole series of Yamato 2199, you'll have to get it online... Nobody outside of Voyager has licensed it and I already told how well that release went off! The legal copy of it costs in the order of $300 over 6-7 Blu ray/DVDs. Fortunately, the Japanese volumes do have English subtitles. I have seen the live-action Yamato (2010) feature from a few years back and I liked it... I saw it online first -- NOT hard to find, btw(!) -- and eventually bought it when it was released on an economical (cheap!) Blu ray in the US. It's a film I prefer to watch subtitled... I did NOT care for the English dub track... they're usually ridiculous on live-action films. The actress who played Yuki Mori in the film was particularly memorable and VERY hot-looking, IMHO... I would classify the live-action Space Battleship Yamato as a budget title. That's what gets most people. They don't understand that Japan does NOT have the financial resources within its entertainment to do $150million-$200million budgeted films like Hollywood. What they CAN and DO often achieve on fractions of those mega-budgets is still impressive... Closest European equivalent in recent history would be Iron Sky (2012) which I also liked. Both films Yamato and Iron Sky were made for under $70 million each... Yamato was closer to $40million I think... Yamato (2010) does show signs of budgetary reasons with the special effects and the way they handled the relationship between the villainous aliens and Earth's alien helpers. That turned a lot of people off... I understand they did this for budgetary reasons AND to keep the film's running time around two hours (which I appreciated!). Still, the live-action film accomplished its goal and told the original anime's story fairly well, IMHO. Oh, and it definitely did NOT leave room for a sequel... NOT happening with that cast, LOL! Oh, and the lead for Yamato (2010) was the same Japanese actor who did the voice for Howl in the anime feature, "Howl's Moving Castle." I KNEW I heard that guy's voice somewhere before! Hahahahaha.

I watched the whole 2199 series. I was sceptical because it was all Japanese, and I usually dont like reading subtitles. But I enjoyed the story so much, that I totally forgot, they were speaking Japanese. I heared they are working on a new Yamato 2202 series, hopefully it will be just as good.

I'm pinning this comment because there's a few questions around why there's weathering, especially streaking "down" - well mostly because that's what the box art depicts, and it does spend time in the atmosphere where the rust, dirt and grime would be picked up by rain and gravity. The silver chipping is mostly caused by space debris. Hope that helps!
@LieshaCichol
@LieshaCichol 6 лет назад
If you have seen the 2199 series that the model is based on (not first TV series), there were few occasions where the ship scraped badly against other ship&rammed into a building head first. On each occasion, you could see scrape mark for at least an episode following the "incidents." My interpretation of streaks on the box art would from those scratches (=the art is drawn in "return trip," not on the way)

Space ships in this universe also spend much of their time submerged underwater. As that is where they are stored when being overhauled, decommissioned, or just plain laid up between wars. New ships are also symbolically launched into the sea before immediately being launched into space. So the weathering makes a lot of sense. And well space is a very dusty place overall... So spaceships WILL pick up their fair share if dirt and grime.

If any you complaining about the weathering saw the show, you would know that the ship was converted from the original sunken Yamato in it's resting place at the dried sea bed and was flown out directly to space after breaking loose from the rocks! They didn't pull it out to give it a fresh paintjob before its maiden voyage to Iscandar!!!
@dalethelander3781
@dalethelander3781 5 лет назад
That was changed in 2199. Now, the old IJN Yamato is camoflage for the construction of the SBY underneath it. The 2199 Yamato is also larger than the old original SBY. The original was 267m in length. The 2199 Yamato is 333m. It was enlarged based on calculations of the size of the first bridge on the original SBY. The producers felt the original ship's first bridge was bigger inside than the outside would indicate. So, they took the apparent measurement of the first bridge and designed the new Yamato around it.

Some of the edits did feel a bit jarring, but there's honestly nothing anyone could have really missed because of it; so no worries. If you're curious, on Naval ships, the Bridge Towers were called Pagota Towers, in reference to Pagota Masts of older ships.

Very, VERY nicely done. This is mine and so many others all time favorite fictional space ship. I do hope you have seen the series since doing this video because it is one of the best anime series of all times. Something that not many people realize is that when the series came to America they changed the name of the ship to the Argo because they believed that the historical significance of the name Yamato would upset too many Americans.

Are a lot of the Yamato model kits a "fit-together" type? I bought, one of the Girls Und Panzer tank model kits last year, and that required a lot of glue for it.

All the bandai Yamato 2199 kits are "fit-together" type. The Cosmo zero fighter 1/72 scale didn't require any glue, and I've yet to assemble the 1/1000 scale Yamato but looking at the instructions it doesn't say you need glue. Happy modeling

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1994">33:14</a> So you built a model from an anime that you have never watched. . . Really, you are missing out man. If you watch the show, it will give you a deeper understanding of building the Yamato. Ghale Garmillon ! Mayor Fuglycool

As a fan of the most recent movie (never saw the original stuff but here's the trailer for the movie if anyone is interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1vj5g5CrIpA.html) I bought this same model along with the Gundam wing yamato expansion set 1. It's been sitting here in the box for almost two years as I realized maybe this wasn't the best choice for my first model build ever...even though I also naively also bought every possible model building tool and paint set there is. I'm not so much concerned with the assembly...more the decal application and painting. So I realized I needed to slow my roll and take a step back. So I bought and will start with the "Pegasus Hobbies Luna Rocketship 1/144th Scale #9111" as it only has like 17 snap together pieces total. On the bright side I have all the tools and paint sitting on standby for whenever I get around to building something. And yes....I realize how silly that was and is.

It's not the live action movie version. It's from the 2013 remake of the original animated series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vV0x4XHdbyc.html. I can highly recommend watching this, if you like sci-fi stuff.

I really want to buy this model, but does it require to paint it or you have done this from your own?

No it doesn't require paint, all parts are molded in the right colours. I just painted mine to add a bit more detail.
