Here’s a glimpse into the workshop. This video is unedited and unscripted. I'm in the processes of working on two different CBG necks. I know this is a different kind of video. I just wanted to create a kinda "Hang Out" style of video where you and I are are both in the workshop building, talking and having fun.

I certainly agree that shaping CBG necks is therapeutic! As an occupational therapist, I’m cognizant of the properties of the activity that make it therapeutic. Some that come to mind include: the creative aspect of carving the shape of the neck; the aroma released from the wood; the increase in heart rate and respiration; the tactile sensation of the smooth neck; the sense of accomplishment from completing it.

I had an idea on how to keep the stain out of the fret slots. Some smallish rubber bands should fit in there pretty well to protect it while you're staining the fretboard

The gem of the video: cut the frets that face downward (while playing) at a 45 degree angle before tapping them into the fret board. Thank you very much!!

you should try your hand with a cabinet scraper. The old timers didn't sand much at all. They were masters at getting perfect surfaces with scrapers. Get some work holders of some sort. clamps and a woodworkers vise.

What would be the typical average width of the fretboard on a three string cigar-box guitar then? Also, I wonder s there maybe a rule of thumb for like a certain amont of width PER string to allow or a guideline maybe?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to make sure your neck is still absolutely flat before fretting it? If it develops a bow couldn't this cause string buzz?? Especially if the neck is convex toward the fret side of the neck??

Been awesome hanging in ya workshop, You don't use a fret rocker to check your frets for level? Thanks to your influence I have a large Shinto on it's way from Japan. Neck building is wickedly good therapy 👍👍🇦🇺

Love watching your videos, just a thought for the neck,I noticed that on guitars the back of the neck is slightly rounded and cigar box guitars it's flat, what about rounding the top and bottom and leaving the middle of the neck flat on a cigar box guitar,? Would that affect the playing?

Thanks, The Zero fret humms very badly. it has a little groove in it. Its on your Jeremiah was a bullfrog 3 stringer. Do I replace it or file it down or? Thanks Del
@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar
@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar 3 года назад
depends on what the problem is? maybe the nut slot not wide enough... maybe too wide?? maybe not enough down pressure. try putting small cotton ball under it or rubber band over to see if vibration is in backside. should become evident and then can be addressed pretty easily...
@flyingdog366
@flyingdog366 3 года назад
Thanks, rubber band did not work, same buzz. will find some cotton somewhere and let you know.. So loosen the strings and put cotton on top of the fret? Sorry to bug you. @@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar

Del a question for you I've finished my son's cigar box guitar Here's my tech question my second and 3rd fret have the exact same note Tinge of fret buzz Help Sir Puck I needs wisdom here . His guitar I used for fret placement has a lockdown nut for the strings I believe I measured from in front instead of string side perplexed lol , sounds great plays awesome just the same note 2 times .

So this will be my boring unedited comment. I wanted to stain my neck black, And I recently inherited a lot of stains, and two were "charcoal" I open one and it looked green. But my eagerness to believe the printed label plowed over my eyes and common sense. I told myself well Maybe it will change when it hit's the wood, or something. nope it stayed green. I wiped it of as much as I could. and opened the 2nd can. It was brown. And I listened to my eyes. I had a dark red mahogany on the shelf, so I mixed the three of them and made my black, dammit. except it has a greenish hue to it. can't see it head on got to be looking some wares else and let the neck creep into your vision from the side. then you can see it like a oily film on the street when the 1st rain comes down. I don't like it. makes me feel grimy. oooo it's 10:56 and your showing off that cool file. But all I can see is that lid to your black stain laying there. And you just got done saying how you didn't want to get the neck your holding black from your fingers. .(maybe it will turn out okay) You can get these Nitrile gloves at Harbor Freight real cheep and they are awesome for keeping the stain away from your hands. Let me tell ya you notice when you run out. Roll the film Have you ever whittled? turning a piece of wood into something cool with nothing but a knife, very therapeutic. I was thinking that would be a nice look for this species of guitar. Maybe find a branch and making a neck out of it leaving the backside de-barked but natural. carry on. Okay I got to pause you right there, so you can be frozen in time doing the thing you enjoy the most shaping the neck: and I get to do the most boring thing known to man, sleep. I'll see you when I see you. made it let er rip should sit on your butt and clamp the end of that neck between your feet make that file hum. or not. it's your gig I got a couple of those files there is also one like that (flat/half round) that is course and fine on both sides I never get tired of creating things with my own hands. one of a kind goodies still here. If your still reading this comment.......you heard me chanting frets frets frets I need Ice cream brb if you needed to what kind of glue would you use to glue in a fret? wow wish I could walk across my shop that effortlessly all right well thank you for hanging out with me all the way tell the end. zoom zoom
