True or False: You need to take your dogs food away from him while he's eating to teach him that you're allowed to do that. This video answers that and gives you a two-part exercise on how to a) teach a young dog or puppy to accept people approaching while he's eating and b) to have his food bowl taken away. NOTE: DO NOT attempt these exercises if your dog is already food aggressive! Seek professional help to ensure you correctly (and safely) solve this issue.

Hello. I am almost convinced in getting a Rottweiler. Ive studied a.lot about them. My last issues is EXERCISE. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & i cant do any exercise. I cant even go on walks everyday. Those a rott really needs to go on a walk.or run everyday? Are there any activities i can do outside upfront or behind the house that can take the place of exercise? Would it be enough if i took him out for speed walking once or twice a week? And to the beach like once a month...as long as i dont get my heartbeats above a mark, i can probably do it. By 6pm i am totally drained of what little energy i had. I can just lay in bed until i fall asleep. I am required to sleep at least 14 hours to have a little energy. You may be thinking, if im limited why am i getting a dog that everything ive read says needs exercise? It would be a long depresing story but fatigue syndrome PLUS fibromyalgia took my life 14 years ago when i was in the high of my career. They took EVERYTHING.I had been.planing to get a rott when these deseases struck. Now i decided they would not take that away from me. There has got to be a way to keep him happy and calm that is not exercise. Help. Thank you.

Every dog has different exercise needs but they all need some form of exercise. If they don't get enough, then problem behaivours will develop. A few easy ideas are: 1) find a treadmill for cheap or free in the used ads and teach him to run on it (make sure to go at a pace that is easily manageable for him and always supervise him while he's on it) 2) find a friend or neighbour who would like a walking companion and ask them if they'd like to take him out on walks/runs with them. 3) stand in your yard or parking area and throw small treats (1cm/1/2in sized or smaller) or his kibble, one piece at a time, for him to chase. Throw the first kibble in one direction and, once he's eaten it, throw the next kibble in the opposite direction so he has to cover twice as much ground to get to it. Do this about 30 - 50 times (or more) depending on how quickly your dog tires out 4) spend time every day teaching him a trick (lots of youtube tutorials for these) 5) Play "Where's the cookie (or toy)?" See my youtube tutorial on how to train this. 6) Use mental enrichment activities throughout the day to let him burn off steam. This group will give you endless ideas: facebook.com/groups/canineenrichment/ There are so many easy ways for you to exercise him, there are no excuses not to. Have fun! :)

Darcie Thedogtrainer Hello. Thank you so much! I was about to give up on the idea of getting one. Because as much as i want one, i do not want to screw up his life because mine is. But you gave me more than you think. You gave me so many alternatived but you also gave me HOPE. Thank you!

I misunderstood your original post. I thought you already had the dog. If you haven't gotten one yet and you really want one, then the only thing I would recommend for you is getting an older one. Definitely don't get a puppy! Puppies are exhausting even for the most able bodied of people and you will never be able to keep up with it or it's training/exercise needs. Look at getting a mature one that's at least 3 or 4 years old already (I adopted a 2 1/2 year old Rottie mix who happens to be a serious couch potato and she's the best dog I've ever had). That way, you'll know exactly what his/her exercise needs are right from the start. DO NOT pick a high energy dog. Pick a lazy, easy going one (yes, they're out there) that just needs a couch to sleep on and some easy exercise during they day. Whatever you do, don't be in a rush to take the first one that comes along because it may be the complete wrong dog for you. But be sure you can afford the dogs medical bills or get pet insurance for it - Rotties are prone to cancer, bad hips, torn ACL's and all of those can be costly (in the many thousands of dollars).

Darcie Thedogtrainer Hello....for many reason i can not adopt, & there are no rotties in the shelter.People that get rotts here, dont give up on them. I dont know if this would change your new advice, but i had already a couch potato, a poodle for 15 years. NOW i have a 7 y/o male Bichon Frise that knows his schedule,Can go forever playing ball, tug of war, hide, but knows its over when i stop ( i didnt train him, he just learned) He is a crazy ball of cotton but he has gotten use to us.I read that i should NOT choose the first pup that comes up to me, but neither the last one. Wouldnt be the last one a Good pick for me? Yes, Yes, i understood Do Not get a rott pup.Would it be all right to get a Low Energy Rott Pup..is there such a thing? or are all of them hyper? There is no pet insurance here. I knew about dysplasia, not about cancer. At one time i though to forget the rott & get a Husky then another poodle then a Pitt then a toy breed (but when i studied about them i didnt like why they are toys and live very short lives) then i considered a malamut but its too hot here then a german shp. BUT i always came back to the Rott. Ive wanted a rott since i was 9y/o its been over 30years of waiting & not beign the right time & reading a lot & watching videos. I understand what u are saying..but im just trying to find a loophole. Im heartbroken.

It's all about picking the right pup. And definitely look for a low energy one. Research the bloodlines to ensure they are bred to be calm and not high energy/high strung (availability will all depend on who's breeding what in your area). So long as you meet the puppies physical and mental exercise needs, you may be able to work it out just fine. All depends on you and how committed you are. :) Good luck!
