Gives lots and lots of praise. Keep small puppy treats around the house in baggies so you can train on the spot, anywhere. Puppies need a lot of your time and energy. Don't give up, stand firm, with the "ouch"(Only if you are not training as a guard dog!) and redirecting their attention with a squeaky toy. You get out what you put in. "Happiness is life with a Doberman"😉

Puppies bite so they can learn how much force to use. When you are playing with your pup make a big deal about biting, but immediately start praising them and playing, once they stop. If they get to intense, walk away for like thirty seconds, since that’s what would happen if they were playing with another dog.

Darcie, I've watched at least 50 hours of video on dog training, and I was at the end of my rope yesterday after almost two months of not being able to stop my puppy from biting me. Everyone talks about letting out a sharp 'ouch' when the puppy bites you, but what no one ever said was that you shouldn't pull away. This is key! Along with your video on brushing, another huge challenge here, I was able to brush my dog and clean his eyes in under 10 minutes and instead of biting me, he was licking my hand an arm by the end of it. I wanted to thank you for talking about the small gestures to avoid that sets us back. I thought my dog hated me. We both love each other much more this morning after watching a few of your videos.

The big thing is to positively reinforce the change immediately. When puppy stops or gets more gentle in the bite, praise puppy with great enthusiasm. S/he will probably go right back to previous hard biting, but that is just to test you and themselves. With my current pup, I got him to stop biting hard within two weeks. I would call what he is doing now a medium-hard bite. Now we will move to get him to gently bite. After that, we will get to puppy nibbles (they don't hurt at all). The process takes many weeks.

Excellent video, thank you. Good to know that we're experiencing something so common. One question: why does our 10w old Border Terrier sometimes drop his chew toy in preference for biting on a human? It seems somehow more appealing to him to bite our clothing.
@DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 4 года назад
It usually has to do with your reaction to him biting your clothes and the way you and your clothes move when he does that vs. the toy.

I have an almost 5 month old toy breed puppy and if you stop playing with her, she will bark at you until you do. Idk how you take a 10 minute break with a puppy who only wants to play. There seem to be two normals for her - either she's running around crazy or sleeping after all the playing. How long will a puppy be so hyperactively playful? Btw, it's a cavanese (part cavalier king charles spaniel and part havanese). Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Okay update: Now he's back to biting AND barking, and I cannot stop his barking. It's really LOUD and he's barking like an aggressive bark and then he's lunging and biting me again. He won't stop barking and the biting and I can't stop either behaviours. What can I DO? Please help? PS: The OUCH works instantly but now he's gotten into these very loud barking AT me fits. He's stopped biting me but he's barking non-stop when I OUCH at him. If I cough, he stops briefly (to see if I'm okay? He does that when I'm sick too). But I keep toys near me to divert his barking, he takes them, runs away, comes back and barks in my face. He also hates when I'm on my phone or laptop, if my hands are moving or being used. I don't know how to stop this new barking. I swapped out the biting (so my bruises can heal) but he is generally not a barking dog, so this is really weird behaviour for him and I don't know what it means. He's GOT to have my attention, and the only way I can get stuff done on the laptop is to crate him and I don't want him to associate the crate with punishment because that's where he sleeps and naps and just chills out to get away from things.
@DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 6 лет назад
I can't offer specific advice over the internet without seeing what's happening firsthand. The best thing to do is a have a local trainer come and meet with you to give you advice specific to your situation. It sounds like he's getting a lot of mixed feedback and has no clear direction and a trainer can set you on the right path. In the meantime, if he gets barking, put him in his crate until he settles (not as a punishment, just as a means of helping him relax) and bring him back out once he's calm. Also, watch my Calm at the Coffee Shop video and start teaching him how to chill out when you're doing other things!

I was thinking of hiring a trainer, but hoping I could find help online first. The OUCH thing worked instantly like a miracle, and then tonight it's just backfired and when I yell OUCH he gets aggressive and bites more while barking and barking and lunging at me. I feel like I traded one problem for two. The time out in his crate helps and he generally comes out calmed down. He's 10 months so beyond the teething stage, but I haven't had him that long, he's a rescue, so I'm inheriting things with him. He's otherwise such a very good boy. I think we're still learning each other still. It's weird how it worked instantly last night and all day today then tonight he's just cranky and barking and biting harder. Thank you for getting back to me! love your channel.
@DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 6 лет назад
Ah, he's 10 months old! So he's not a puppy but an adolescent. They play by different rules. Plus, he's new to you, so you're both still figuring each other out. The tips I outlined in this video are for pups up to about 4 months old which is why things aren't working like they should for yo. Be careful with looking for help online because none of it will necessarily be specific to your problem or relationship. That's where the eyes of a good trainer are worth every penny. You'll start to see improvements almost immediately.
@Merrida100
@Merrida100 6 лет назад
Thank you! I've been learning more and do see most "biting" posts are geared towards the babies. He really is such a perfect dog, and I've had no problems with him at all, it's incredible, then this hand biting thing started. I think he's trying to communicate with me that he has to go out or wants to play and doesn't know another way to get my attention. OK so I'll stop with that method because he's an adolescent (I thought they were puppies up to one year)...and he's new to me, so yeah, we're still figuring out. I'm getting the impression since he doesn't bark in general and he doesn't like loud noises that I'm just encouraging an aggressive attitude or something. He's more of a gentle soul except when he gets excited. Mostly he's really quite a quiet mellow fellow. Okay, so IRL trainer it shall be. I want the best for him and I'm doing the best I can but know I need to do more. Thank you again for responding.

@RosalindHoover - I don't know what sort of puppy you have but I bought the Bitter Apple Spray made by Chewy on your recommendation. I'm here to tell other puppy parents that this spray DOES NOT WORK! I should have stuck with my gut instinct and ordered a CITRONELLA SPRAY, which I have since done. Citronella is something that dogs avoid, it's a natural product and safe to use on your hands and arms to stop your puppy from biting and ripping into your skin. If you have a persistent puppy who won't stop misbehaving or pulling/jumping on the leash, Petbarn sell a head harness with a muzzle attached that you can easily clip your lead on to, they cost around $25 and you can order online I have found it to be a wonderful teaching aid for my overexcited now 6 month old puppy. I hope this information is helpful to other puppy parents who are at their wit's end like I was.

I have a GSD puppy who has given me a scar on my face from lunging at me and biting my face. I try to redirect her with toys and praise her when she uses her toys and when she does bite I pop her on the nose, and then she full out attacks me, chomping down on me and actually drawing blood. Sometomes when she bites I try walking away and ignoring her for 30 seconds but she follows and attacks me. I have terrible, terrible experiences with dogs, and have multiple scars on my body from dogs attacking me, but my parents go this dog anyway. I am a thoroughly terrified, so much that I usually don't leave my room when she's out of the cage. When you pet her, she bites. Look at her, she bites. Stand up, she bites. I cannot stand it anymore and idk what else to do. My parents are very aggressive toward her, they scream at her and pulled at her fur and flesg, making her whine and whimper whenever she does something wrong. I know this is probably why she's so aggressive, but I don't really know what to do.
@DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 6 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with dogs and with this dog in particular. I would highly recommend you work with a professional trainer first hand to sort out these issues. This is not something that can be handled via internet comments. Find a trainer who can teach you how to redirect the dog and/or discipline appropriately, but without harsh punishments (ie. punching, kicking, shocking the dog). In the meantime, look up how to teach the puppy to do some tricks - 'spin' and 'touch' are good starting points, but the possibilities are endless with all of the youtube tutorials. Getting the puppy using it's brain productively can start to change her behaviour and relationship to you. Best of luck.

Yikes about your parents! Maybe talk to the local humane society... their behavior towards the dog sounds abusive to me. Plus they’re putting you in harm’s way! Not good. :-(
@egsir95
@egsir95 5 лет назад
First you should stop popping the dog in the nose as this is saying to the puppy that you want to play even rougher, it’s doing the opposite of what you want. Next, when you ignore her, you need to ignore her until she settles down. If she is. Being crate trained, and crate trained correctly (which I doubt from what I’ve heard so far, but I’ll add this anyway), you can pop her in the crate for 15 minutes for a little time out. It’s important the crate is viewed as a happy place for this to work though. Your best bet for right now is to redirect with a toy or bone every single time she tries to bite. It’s a lot of work, and having a puppy is in no way really fun or easy. It’s a ton of work. When she tries to bite immediately stick a toy in her mouth, if she tries to bite again, put it right back in her mouth. Keep doing this until she either decides to stop and play with the toy or stops biting. The other thing I’d tell you is that a GSD is a working breed. I have a Viszla puppy that ten weeks old right now and she’s a working breed too so I see a lot of similar behavior. It’s soooo important that you give them a ton of exercise everyday as well as a fair amount of training or other mental work like scent games as this will actually tire them out more. I’m talking like an hour twice a day outside, off leash. You’ll see a decrease in the behavior if you do this. Finally, the puppy flat out will not get better unless you stop trying to physically restrain the puppy and physically hitting it. Period. Stop it immediately. The dog should never be negatively punished. It doesn’t work and no trainer will recommend that. Positive reinforcement is the only thing that works. When the puppy chooses the toy or bone over you, praise it. If it bites you can give a firm no and then redirect with the toy or bone but you don’t scream or yell at it at all. Make sure you praise and treat all of the positive behavior the dog does and you’ll see a change in a day or two.

Yelling OUCH worked instantly. He stopped. And I was making the mistake of pulling my hand away which he thought was playing. @DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 6 лет назад
Yes, I would redirect him with playing. Keep his focus on toys, not you.
@Merrida100
@Merrida100 6 лет назад
I just adopted him 4 weeks ago and he's a wonderful puppy. I tend to do okay but with this hand biting, I was doing everything wrong and getting frustrated and short tempered. I'd try to hide my hands, ignore him (I only use positive reinforcement) but it wasn't working. I can't get over how fast and immediate the OUCH worked. Like he understood he hurt me, and stopped immediately. But sometimes he does it when I'm in bed trying to go to sleep, and he gets a surge of energy and he bites, I say OUCH he stops then stands over me and barks. I get up then, and play with him a bit? I also ALWAYS make sure we play with toys, we don't wrestle. It was also helpful about the petting. He's super affectionate and loves to cuddle and snuggle, but now I know better than to push it.
@DarcieThedogtrainer
@DarcieThedogtrainer 6 лет назад
When you're in bed no I wouldn't play with him. I would have him sleeping in a crate beside me, either on the bed (if that's where he's used to sleeping) or on the floor beside the bed. Set some boundaries for him so that he understands bed time is for sleeping.
@Merrida100
@Merrida100 6 лет назад
When I first got him he slept with me on the bed. Now he sleeps in his crate MOST nights. I just leave the door open and he goes right in on his own and just stays there. He uses his crate for his naps and just to hang out. It rarely happens when I'm laying in bed. Sometimes in the morning it's how he wakes me up. Most often when he does it, it's when I'm sitting on the sofa and he's relaxing with me then he gets this random spike of energy and dives after my hands and wrists. I'm covered in bruises. I was trying the "NO BITING" approach, which obviously didn't work. It happens when we go for a walk too, occasionally, he'll just lunge for my hands and wrists when he gets excited (but I'm a mile away from home). I try to extricate myself. I'll try the OUCH when we're walking and see - he may not bark out there or by walking he'll just get over it. The worst is when I'm sitting in the corner of the couch because I cannot move fast enough. NOTE: He hasn't bit me since yesterday when I started using your OUCH technique. Not even once.

It's nice to hear other people saying that. Too many breeders and non-breeders are too quick to get rid of the puppies when in every area of the dog they need to be with mom and siblings until 11 to 12 weeks. It helps them with social anxiety, general socializing, and their overall temperament. When I bought all of my dogs, as puppies, I paid the breeder to keep the puppy with the mom for another 3 1/2 to 4 weeks just for the reasons I mentioned. The result; a wonderful, social, anxiety free, loving dog that was very easy to train and, very apt to learn. They have never felt "abandoned" so to speak. To pay $50 to $100 more for a well socialized dog is a small price to pay in the long run.

This. Too bad the mother die days after giving birth so my sister got it as a gift. Yet they're not patient enough to train them...

Puppies go through what I call alligator phase. My wife bites him on the nose and says no. I wear welding gloves. The yelping hasn’t worked for me but I’m sure I pull away. My arms bloody with evidence.

Why don't you just do what the mother dog would do if the puppy bites her too hard? Grab and hold his muzzle and say NO (obviously the mother dog would bark instead).

Americans, Chinese, want to stop your puppy from biting? Stop caging them in what you call 'crates', stop docking their tails, stop abandoning them the entire day with nothing to do! A puppy should experience all positive emotions (excitement), it is not a robot.
